2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Over/Under on how many more dead hooker bodies will be revealed on long island beaches due to the storm surge: 4

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

One of my friends from HS whose hubby is in the military evacuated Greensboro. My bro's wife and family live in Williamsburg, VA and they may stay. I'm really nervous about this whole thing.

My brother-in-law's family was just evacuated from their Navy housing down the street in Newport News. Your family members may want to think about a Richmond hotel, before they fill up.

My family has been working on him to leave, and I really want him too. Heck, I told him he could make a roadie here and crash with us.

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Amen. My property has many old, tall trees. I hate wind.
You're going to get hit much harder then I am by the sounds of it right now. Should be a Cat 1 or TS by the time it gets to me. 65 mph winds will still wreak some havoc. I'm hoping my peaches, pears and apples aren't all on the ground by Monday morning, tomatoes too
My Sis in Law used to live on the outer banks, glad she isn't there now, she used to evacuate to Richmond to a friends. The outer banks is one cool place but protection from the wind is 0

I live on top of a hill. Great when it floods. Not so great now. I fully expect power to be out for 2-3 days.

We are expecting 70 MPH winds.

Back when I lived in the Carolina Piedmont the joke was the Outer Banks is NC's condom. And yet local news would always have footage of some guy surfing during a gale.

Its a great place to go in the summer(my sis in law liked it better in off season when everyone cleared out), the beaches are awesome and there is so much beach it isn't crowded. Swimming in warm salt water is great, loved my visits down there but I'd put my tail between my legs when something like this approaching

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

I'm thinking of parking my car in the T garage across the street tomorrow night. My spot is next to a tall pine tree. I'm thinking the $10-$20 I'll pay is better than a crushed car. Probably nothing will happen but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Sounds like the worst is going to hit us on Sunday afternoon. The rest of the week looks fabulous.

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Another thing about the outer banks, once they declare mandatory evacuations, you are on your own, they won't come help you and they close the bridges. The houses are a trip, most built on stilts so the storm surge goes under them without screwing much up. Some go for 10,000 a week rental, right on the beach, swimming pools and hot tubs in the dunes, walk over the dunes to some of the nicest beaches anywhere. It sure won't be a paradise in a few hours

Kepler, walrus and anyone else on the board in the storm's way. Be safe.

We're thinking about you and everyone else who may be affected--hoping for the best. This won't lessen your anxiety about what the storm will bring, but these things generally turn out to be less cataclysmic than predicted--for most folks.

Me! I'm in Portland Maine. I'll have a live streaming cam going Sunday while I drive to work and from the ocean.

NHC and The Weather Channel are sticking to a NYC landfall while most everyone else is moving it east.

Your post reminded me of what happened to some folks who owned houses on the beaches of Galveston when Alicia hit. Actually, those homes weren't on the beach, they were on the vegetation line where they were permitted. After Alica passed, the houses were on the beach, because she moved the vegetation line, and the houses had to go.
