2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

If it hits DC am I allowed to gut and fillet a tourist?

----

Actually, this should be quite annoying... I don't have any "no electricity" provisions as such beyond my maglite and a few books. I'll probably hit the grocery store Thursday... peanut butter, jelly, chips, jerky... the necessities really.

Since you're getting this stuff for an apartment to be provisioned, you might find it helpful to get an electric camp lantern (battery operated). I think they sell in both fluorescent and LED these days.

we'll see, that'd be more of a thing I'd have to amazon right now and hope it got here in time.

Try Target, Kohls or Wally World.

If it hits DC, I want to see if all those trees that PEPCO trimmed from the power lines really helped.

Le Target is the closest and its 45 min... thing is, do I want to do this on a "maybe"?

Models are trending eastward for now, though the confidence of the models 4-5 days out are very low. Looks to be making landfall anywhere from South Carolina to Mass/Rhode Island, anywhere from a Strong Cat 3 to low Cat 4 or a Cat 1 or 2 in New England. Of course, it could just slip out to sea.

I'll be working at the airport Sunday/Monday...not sure how much work there will be as commercial flights dont like to fly into hurricanes. I cringe at the thought of what a hurricane would do to the air traffic through the New York area. If the wind blows the wrong way our Portland to New York is canceled.

they are quite good! we have a few every summer. usually stuffed with fudge, cherries, pasties and microbrews. highly recommended!

Just be sure to avoid the older, more wrinkled ones. Their winter range is usually down around the Gulf of Mexico, where they are left to broil for far too long, and get terribly tough. :)

The experts say that New York City is due for a direct hit.

If you order it from Amazon, MAYBE it will get there in time, or you WILL get it with a 45 min drive.

Either way, Irene is a maybe.

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

How can you be 45 minutes from any store that sells a battery powered lantern? I'm 10 minutes away from about 8 stores that would have one and as brent likes to point out, I live in the ****ing boondocks.

You're stuck if you're in the transition zone between civilization (lots of specialty stores of the right kind) and redneck country (few stores of any kind, but each one of them carries ammo, PBR, and hunting knives).

Even growing up I was closer than 45 minutes to both a wal-mart and a target, and there wasn't a wal-mart in the 3 closest towns to where I lived! We now have both in my hometown and they're both about 10 minutes away, but that is a more recent development. You can cover a long distance in 45 minutes.

Re: 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

You can't always be certain about these things. I was new to Houston when "Andrew" was making a beeline toward Galveston, still the most powerful storm ever recorded. Being a rookie, I thought I'd drop by my local Kroger to lay in a few supplies. It was like a Fellini movie, with people fighting over parking spaces and carts not to mention food items. I headed for home and awaited the worst. It was Friday and "Andrew" was supposed to hit early Saturday morning. Woke up the next day and the storm had stalled, moved to the west and hit Corpus Christi, with greatly reduced impact. I got my car washed.

Remember, about 90% of the people who die in hurricanes die in the storm surge, the wall of water pushed ashore as a storm makes landfall. The rest are merely unlucky: they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's no consolation, of course, but tornados are far more scary to me, and far more destructive on a pound for pound basis.

Oh, that's easy...

45 by train (on non-earthquake days) to Columbia Heights (DC)... could try to see if there's a Target in Seven Corners... but instead of metro rail its a bus. I'm still learning the advantages of city life... sure... so many bars... but god forbid you need consumer items. Life takes a different turn when dependent upon alternate transport.

(and gosh, let's talk about bikeshare shaln't we)

Latest predicted tract has this one going right over us here in NJ. I can do very nicely without this. Go east!!
They have several tracts that have it directly into the gulf of Maine without hitting land before hand. Not good when you live on the coast. Its still a few days out but I may be battening down hatches. Supposed to go an air show on Sunday, thinking its Saturday or forget about it now

I have no idea what you're talking about. Bus, train...w.t.f. no way in **** could I live like that. If I want something I'll hop in my truck and go buy it.
