2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

I changed your quote because it had nothing to do with the discussion we were having...i.e. the glaring question mark the Gophers have in net next season. Your point in saying that those other players weren't "stud freshman" until after the fact shows that there is definitely a question mark in net for the Gophers...in other words, those players were question marks before they did anything. Will Wilcox and $hitbrick be All-American goalies like Patterson? Who knows. Will they put up solid numbers? No one knows yet. That is why it is a giant question mark for Minnesota next season. Apparently, you didn't realize that you made that concession already...but I will accept it. Thank you. :p:D:D

They'll be better defensively next year. It will be like many Gopher teams of old. That's fine with me. It's not like Hauser or Frazee oozed confidence.

Brock sure got lucky. He's entering a great development program with the Islanders. Certainly will do more for him than UND ever could.

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Not to hijack your thread so I'll only say this - I think it's fair to say UM's goaltending is a question mark because we just don't know. Whether or not it's 'glaring' remains to be seen but I trust the coaches (especially Guenztel) to make sure the team defense is sound and will allow the goalies to settle in.

Sorry to hear about the loss of Nelson.

I don't disagree. The only thing I was pointing to is it isn't uncommon for first year starters to fill that role successfully. Even freshman.

Patterson's save percentage this year is actually worse than all three of those freshman goalies I mentioned earlier. His GAA is lower (2.23) but that's also a product of his team's defense giving up fewer opportunities.

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

You are projecting possibilities on offense. Which is NO different than what I was doing. You are making guesstimates. Just as much "hope" as anything I was stating.

Whether Wilcox or Shibrowski, they are really no different a situation than those "stud freshman" were in. Those "stud freshman" weren't "stud freshman" until we had the benefit of hindsight. Which is the same case Wilcox or Shibrowski are in now. how that makes it a "flawed comparison" is a bit of a head scratcher. The point was first year starters in that situation have been successful and it isn't uncommon. More commonplace than your 180 goal scenario.

You would basically have to play all the way to the Final Game to make the 4 goal per game scenario work. For a guy intent on pointing out "hopes and dreams", I guess that qualifies. If you want to use facts, you have to go back something like 8 years to find a team go over that mark. Beyond just the reality that UND didn't have THAT much offense anyway, it was outlandish. I suppose it is a bit moot now anyway with Nelson gone. They won't come close to that mark w/o him.

You sure make a lot of assumptions on a) a team you really know nothing about and b) on a season that hasn't started.

Please, will you look into your crystal ball and tell me exactly how next season is going to go? I like to know what happens!

But it's not like this surprises me.

I miss the days when Hammy only posted on GPL. Those days were awesome!

I also miss the days where when on USCHO Hammy only posted in the Gopher season thread trying to impress fellow Minnesota fans with all his inside knowledge of how every recruit that didn't commit to the U was due to Lucia and Co. having lost interest in the player. Those days were super awesome!

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Too bad about Nelson. I think you guys can survive his loss, but now if Kristo leaves it may be another slow start next year.

It may happen more frequently because the best goalies leave a year or two early, but overall it's not very common for a freshman goalie to come in and light it up, especially if they are taking the full time load.

I miss the days when you had wit.

Indeed. Having to branch out into all sorts of topics has really caused some of my replies to just not work as well as I hoped. Though your strategy of never branching out and always saying the same thing really hasn't allowed you to fair much better. Can we just agree that Hammy is a horrible person?

I don't think his point was that it is common for freshmen goalies to "light it up". His point was, it isn't uncommon for freshmen goalies to come in and produce at the level that Patterson did this year. He gave three examples, and listed stats.

The board is filled with speculation about next season given the time of the year it is. I know it might take some reading comprehension on your part but it shouldn't be that tough for you to see that.

Unless I'm giving you too much credit?

Actually, I liked Brock, and I hope he does well in the pros. I have never met Hammy, or seen him play hockey, so I really can't comment on his being horrible. And, I don't think you used fair right.

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

I would put BC #1, followed by North Dakota, Western Michigan, and Union. Minnesota has no proven goaltending, and Patterson saved their bacon plenty of times this season. They could potentially be the best team in college hockey next season, but until they get a proven netminder, I wouldn't give them the #1 tag.

The team who wins on Saturday will be the number one team at the start of next season. ;P

This is almost assuredly true. Of course, I was speaking in terms of who should be the #1 team to start next season. That being said, I had Notre Dame as my #1 to start this season, and we all saw how that prediction turned out. :p:D:D

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

As expected...

Schlossman said:
Junior goalie Aaron Dell also will sign a deal, I’m told. He’s a free agent and I don’t know what teams are in on him or when he plans to sign, but expect him to turn pro as well.

Fortunately for UND they are bringing in Clarke Saunders as an experienced hand in net, and also have Zane Gothberg coming in...one of the top Goalie recruits in the country. Either way though, losing Dell hurts as he was almost unbeatable in the playoffs.

Schlossman also goes on to say that Knight is likely to return, and that it might be awhile before we hear about Kristo, as the Canadiens' GM was just fired.

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Depending upon the health of some of the other Wild defensemen, it looks like Chay's got a shot to see his first NHL action Saturday night in St. Paul, which would be kind of cool.

Thrashing at the hands of BC. Dropping f-bombs. Gooning it up when the game is out of hand.

I wonder if I searched this forum long and hard I could come up with any posts by certain fans mocking fans of another program for similar events? :p

I thought the same thing but figured not to rub salt in the wounds... it won't be long before we hear that NoDak is just a bunch of cheap goons again and then we can tell them to remember 4/5/2012. Minny had a good season, certainly nothing to hang their heads about since anyone playing that BC team on that night would have suffered the same fate.
