2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

I certainly don't see my expectation on goalie performance at the U as outlandish as your comments on UND goals scored projections. We've seen far more first year goalies succeed than we have teams scoring 180+ goals a season in the last 5+ years. :D

At least my comments are based on actual performance (and recent history for North Dakota) as opposed to hopes and dreams. Goaltending will be a glaring question mark on the Gopher resume heading into next season. Scoring will not be a question mark for North Dakota (assuming nobody leaves early, which is admittedly a big assumption).

I'm not saying Minnesota's goaltending will be terrible. What I'm saying is that it is a huge question mark. Your comparisons are flawed from the start as your are comparing stud freshman to a sophomore who has proven that he is worthy of 20 minutes of ice time in two full seasons of play. Are you suggesting that Wilcox will be your savior? Either way, the lack of experience in net is a glaring question mark for Minnesota's team next season.

EDIT: FWIW, 180 goals over 45 games = 4 goals/game. 5 teams in the past 5 seasons have averaged 4+ goals/game, including North Dakota in 2010-2011. If we look back at the last 10 years, that number increases to 18 teams in the past 10 years, including 3 different North Dakota squads. Doesn't sound too "outlandish" now does it. ;)

This makes Tuesday THAT much worse. I would assume Kristo is done as well now.

I wouldn't necessarily make that assumption. I think Dell might be the next to depart. Kristo is still 50/50 from what I have heard.

Well, North Dakota will not be nearly as explosive next season as they could have been, but they should still be a very solid group offensively, and if Jones commits, they could have a powerhouse blueline. Hopefully there are no other early departures.

Same here. I couldn't imagine I'd want to follow someone, but maybe I should learn this thing. :D
It's pretty fun, and depending on the array of sports you follow vigorously, it can be so useful. I get up to the minute stuff on all of my teams, which helps me find where to get information, etc.

You are projecting possibilities on offense. Which is NO different than what I was doing. You are making guesstimates. Just as much "hope" as anything I was stating.

Whether Wilcox or Shibrowski, they are really no different a situation than those "stud freshman" were in. Those "stud freshman" weren't "stud freshman" until we had the benefit of hindsight. Which is the same case Wilcox or Shibrowski are in now. how that makes it a "flawed comparison" is a bit of a head scratcher. The point was first year starters in that situation have been successful and it isn't uncommon. More commonplace than your 180 goal scenario.

You would basically have to play all the way to the Final Game to make the 4 goal per game scenario work. For a guy intent on pointing out "hopes and dreams", I guess that qualifies. If you want to use facts, you have to go back something like 8 years to find a team go over that mark. Beyond just the reality that UND didn't have THAT much offense anyway, it was outlandish. I suppose it is a bit moot now anyway with Nelson gone. They won't come close to that mark w/o him.

blah blah blah, let's talk about something else besides my team's glaring hole in net next season...blah blah blah

Fact remains, the Gophers have a glaring question mark in net next season. No matter what pretty picture you wish to paint, it is an absolute question mark. Either of your goalies may very well turn into great players, but until they do, the giant question mark looms over the net.

Re: 2011-2012 North Dakota Offseason Thread

Just move Tate Maris to forward. He'll easily fill the role Nelson played on the team this year.

You are essentially saying what I did. The only difference is I pointed out how such a situation has been handled adeptly by more than a few guys under the same circumstances in recent years so it is not exactly as difficult as you try to make it out to be.

The fact that you have to misquote my post only tells me you don't have much to counter my other remarks. So I'll let you get back to your "hopes and dreams" for next year.

I changed your quote because it had nothing to do with the discussion we were having...i.e. the glaring question mark the Gophers have in net next season. Your point in saying that those other players weren't "stud freshman" until after the fact shows that there is definitely a question mark in net for the Gophers...in other words, those players were question marks before they did anything. Will Wilcox and $hitbrick be All-American goalies like Patterson? Who knows. Will they put up solid numbers? No one knows yet. That is why it is a giant question mark for Minnesota next season. Apparently, you didn't realize that you made that concession already...but I will accept it. Thank you. :p:D:D
