Re: 2011-2012 DIII Opinion Poll

Tweedle Dee will hopefully ignore me since I already posted earlier, but:

The best of the rest -- and in honor of breaking out that holiday tie:
1) Salve Regina (tying Norwich -- always good goaltending)
2) Manhattanville (tying Middlebury -- ditto)
3) Neumann (tying Plattsburgh)
4) Trinity (almost tying RIT)
5) Plymouth State (for having 3 ties -- good goaltending, but no scorers?)
6) Nichols (for having had a coach named Guy Angers (easily the most ref-provoking name in the biz) -- and "fit to be tied")
7) St. Olaf (for tying Concordia (mn) and taking River Falls to OT)
8) St. Mary's (for digging out 3 ties)
9) Potsdam (for tying Oswego and having the exact same scores in each pair of games (Elmira(1-5)/St.Mikes(6-2) (iz like a tie, no?)
10) Finlandia (for starting the season with a tie (and their most goal production) and never looking back)
11) The Chatham Cougars (for having almost the most wins in exhibition (3) except for their ties with Penn State which would have put them maybe in a tie with RIT)
12) Wilfrid (Wilfred) Laurier (for tying RIT in exhibition according to collegehockeystats, but RIT site says that RIT won (shootout?))

Now on to the 12 days of Christmas! Happy to all.

Before attending the RIT-Amherst game I would have agreed with you on the first clear differentiation line thing, but Amherst gave RIT a pretty good run for their money. The difference came down to a flukey goal off a skate. Last Sunday, I would not say the line was very clear and, in fact, Amherst outplayed RIT, they just lost the game. I put RIT #1 in my poll, they won the game, but Amherst certainly is in the same league (just not the same conference).

As long as RIT's record stays unblemished, they'll be a clear number one in my books. While Amherst may be close in the game, they do have two losses, albeit against teams ranked ahead of them (Elmira AND RIT). RIT has beaten no 2 Norwich and No 5 Amherst.

RIT hasn't played No. 3 Elmira yet.

They have however beaten No. 2 Norwich 4-1 though. :)

Flukey goal or not, they made their opportunities count. All Amherst did was shoot it from the blue line, Just like they did last year here at Ritter. Outplayed? I would say RIT played pretty good considering they played short handed half the game b/c amherst had the refs in their back pocket. Amherst got away with every little pick/interference call all over the ice.
That being said, two very good teams, and an entertaining game.

RIT/Elmira home and home series scheduled for Feb 10-11.

Amherst's style of play focuses on generating offense from its defense. They won two national championships from this system and Geneva Lloyd is one of the best players in the country.

I don't disagree with that last statement at all, she stood out in the game. And I'm not questioning the Amherst D, its proved to be a solid bunch. RITs D is equally as good, and limited Amherst to long shots. You won't beat Chamberlain with too many of those.

Re: 2011-2012 DIII Opinion Poll

Maybe you need to bring your own refs. RIT was called for an excess of physical play. When a player is already pinned on the boards and you take a couple of strides and elbow them in the head, the way Moss did, you deserve a major penalty and game misconduct, because that is dangerous play. Obviously the ECAC-West has bigger players and a more physical style of play. Having just come from the 4 games in Canada, with Canadian style play, which I do not think anyone would call less physical and where the refs are accustomed to the style, no wonder there was a bit of a learning curve on acceptable limits of physicality. The ref team of Guay-Zanetti, who called the Trinity game on Saturday, are noted for a let them play style; Kaselouskas-Mann, while I doubt they are in anyone's "back pocket," call more penalties, that is just the way it is.
I think RIT has a great team and said so to Coach MacDonald after the game. They played very well on the penalty kill and Chamberlain is one of the best goalies I have seen this season (no offense to Sullivan, Pujol and Jones intended).
MERRY MERRY and Best Wishes for the New Year!
