2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

A) Recruit more guys with less prototypical NHL size (Cammarata, Guertler, Kloos, Reillys, etc..) and B) Recruit a mix of blue chip and role/character guys (Louie Nanne, etc)

Its tough. The second strategy...they do today. See recruit list below. In that case, they left within two years. Today, not.

Less prototypical NHL size is possible...but comes with its own obvious on-the-ice disadvantages.

fyp

That's all you needed to say - I didn't expect 5mn to get it, but you should know better.

Umm read...you shouldn't have stepped there.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

We were sitting behind the Sioux net, so Condon came skating straight at us, and you're right, you could tell from his first stride he was not going to be beaten to that puck. Just flying.

That was an unbelievable ice level video shot of him breaking in on net, so I can imagine what you saw in person...awesome. Gotta love the explosive athleticism of Nate Condon. If he's not the fastest, he's one of the fastest skaters in the WCHA.

For those who didn't see the video, @ 3:17 min. Condon just turns on the jets a fires a 5 hole cannon in Dell's face, and jumps his stick.

Err.................Union was seeded higher than the Gophers and is in the Frozen Four. I'd say the Gophers are lucky they might be as good as the EZAC this year.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Hasn't really hurt BC at all.

So I took a mn and looked at it. We've got essentially the same number of guys 6 3'' and over as BC. We've got 10 guys under six foot and they've got 13.

Not dissimilar in size. For all I know, you could be right...might be some opportunity to shift to recruiting smaller star players. Although this may not have been the same team if we would have taken a pass on players like Bjugstad, Alt and Budish.

We do now :)

Not saying we should pass on big players. Just saying you need a mix of guys with the skill level of a Taylor Cammarata, Kyle Rau, etc.. who will stick around more than a year or two, and the blue chip players with prototypical NHL size (like Bjugstad).

Getting character guys who are willing to play on a lower line to start their college careers, and be great team guys helps a lot too.

How many saw Lameroux from the Whoiux on top of one of the Gophers punching 6-8 times while the ref stood there doing nothing?
I see what the East Coast guys mean about horrible officiating.

Oh well, on to Tampa anyway!!!!!

Yeah I figured that would get a roughing call.

Nice try but no. You guys made it sound like the WCHA was the EZAC of past years when they were lucky to get 2 teams in (despite the WCHA getting 4) which was why the Gophers won it. Nice attempt to spin it since Union made it this year but that wasnt even close to the point you two were making and you know it.

The Sioux were seeded higher than the Gophers and so was Michigan and arent in the Frozen Four...enjoy your box :D

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Meh. 2 titles in 13 years isn't exactly a stellar run.

LOL. Correct me if I am wrong, including the Gophers we have seen three teams win more than one title in the last 13 years and you are saying not exactly a stellar run. IMO, it looks like a stellar run It is super hard to win national championships.

They were according to the math in February. In fact if I remember things right sometime in February Minnesota wasn't even in the field. Did my prediction end up wrong? Sure. So what? Prediction business is a crapshoot anyway. I'm just as glad of the way things turned out as anyone.

it seems somewhat fitting that the fan in the upper right seems more intrigued by the texture of the glass than the assault that is happening right in front of him.

They were in the field...there were people putting out scenarios where they wouldnt be in the field but I dont remember a point where they were out even after being swept by Denver. UND, Denver and CC were the bubble teams in February Minnesota and Duluth were in pretty much from the word go.

That is good hard nosed Whioux hockey...I bet Lammy got extra scholarship money for it.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

I am shocked! SHOCKED!

When there was no penalty called there, I thought, "Uh oh. It's about to get ugly." I thought for sure the refs had just lost control of the game. But nothing happened in the next 30 seconds, then nothing in a couple of minutes, then nothing the rest of the game. That was surprising to me.

Ya, I'm not sure what that guy is talking about. It's a lot harder to win than he thinks. Just when you slay the dragon so to speak, next up is BC. That's how it goes. It ain't easy. Michigan, the all time leader in national titles, hasn't won it since 1998. North Dakota hasn't won it since 2000. Don Lucia has the same number of titles as Red Berenson in far fewer years. Everyone's favorite punching bag, Dave Hakstol, doesn't have a single title.

I thought the Gophs restraint was great. Earlier in the season...you go after em. Now...keep youre eyes on the prize.

What did Starman say after it happened? Lam is one of the smartest players I've ever seen play?
