2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

And now we've got the hottest team in the country to look forward to - great, just great.

Needless to say, MN had better bring its "A" game against BC as goals will be at a premium.

One thing the Gophers had in the last TWO UND games will be critical against BC. They cannot let BC get the early goals. Sure it will be important for Patterson to turn in another stellar performance...but moreso than any other team we've played this year, the forwards/team must carry play early and produce.

I said it in the other thread, but thought I would come over here and reiterate my congratulations to Minnesota on the victory today. The Gophers were the better team this season, and especially in the game tonight. I'll be cheering on the Gophers down in Tampa, and hopefully they can take down BC

Careful. You're going to singlehandedly destroy this rivalry. :)

Is something wrong with Bjugstad? He was pretty invisible on Saturday and yesterday was a bit more noticeable but didn't do anything great and made several mistakes that he normally doesn't make. I know he got banged up during the WJC and took that hit to the head a few months back, but I haven't heard anything about it. It just seems to me that his game has been off for a while now and no one is talking about it. Is it just me?

Funny thing about the Frozen Four. I've gone to every one since 2005 and that 2 week break always seems to be the equalizer. While favorites have had their success, none of the 4 teams should be afraid of the other. All 4 are there for a reason and anything seems to happen. Denver in '04, Michigan St. in '07 and UMD last year were 3 teams no one would have picked going into Frozen Four weekend. This year, all 4 teams won their conference regular season championship. In my opinion, all 4 are the hottest teams in the country. While I agree with you Bakunin on saying "great just great" for having to play BC, BC should be saying the same thing about us, Ferris St. should be the same thing about Union and Union should be saying the same thing about Ferris St. Everyone will need their "A" game to advance, not just the Gophers. I say bring it on. I don't know how I'm going to get through this week of work before flying down on Sunday. :)

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

I was going to post this in the regional thread, but I see it's locked up.

Anyways, congrats on yesterday's win. Minnesota demonstrated they were the best team in the WCHA all season, and I expected them to do as much again yesterday.

Now you guys will get the chance to tilt at the same windmill we've been tilting at for the last 8 years or so. I'm not going so far as to say I'm cheering for you to win a national championship, but if you want to kick the snot out of some fanboys from Chestnut Hill, it isn't going to bother me in the least.

Beat BC and lose to the Union/Ferris State winner. Got it. :p It has been tough watching UND kick as much tail as they have the past few seasons while Minnesota has floundered around. I am just glad it is still 7 > 5, because it could easily have been 8 or 9 for UND. Next year in the WCHA is going to be a fun one!

With UMD out, the Gophers are carrying the WCHA colors in addition to their own. While that may not mean much to UMinn and UND in the future, it does now. Go get 'em.

I'm sad we never got another shot at you guys. If only our empty net shot didn't miss by a foot or two...what a different year we might have had.

Good luck against BC. You'll need it.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

For those who last weekend called for Lucia's head after the worst third period all season against UND shame on you. People were frustrated that he did not call a timeout, but making a change, really? Let Guentzel take over, really? That negativity needs to stay outta here. We are lucky to have on the best college hockey coaches of all time leading our young men. Shame on you! Go get em boys, you have a great leader, don't be afraid to win!

No kidding, that squad is just a total buzzsaw right now. Maybe the nearly 2 weeks off will help to cool them off a bit. Though the same can be said for the other 3 teams as well.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Congrats to the Gophers on their resurgence this year. I bet your guys will want to ride the high of beating their rival to make the Frozen Four and write a happy ending to their story. BC is good, but the Gophers could be a handful.

It will be fun to watch.

Meh. 2 titles in 13 years isn't exactly a stellar run.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Some nice looks at the goal scoring by the Gophers. Condon had hot wheels on his breakaway...wow.

We were sitting behind the Sioux net, so Condon came skating straight at us, and you're right, you could tell from his first stride he was not going to be beaten to that puck. Just flying.

I know your post doesn't deserve this post, but...

Lucia is a very good coach...maybe top 10 in hockey. He had a tough string of years. But this program was just nailed by players leaving early over the last 5 years.

Star recruits leaving the program early (leaving the remaining role players staying for 4 years):

2004 recruits
$Alex Goligoski-LD (2/5/04)
$Kris Chucko-RW (12/31/03)
#Nate Hagemo-RD (11/18/03)

2005 recruits
&Phil Kessel-RC (3/4/05)
#Blake Wheeler-RW (4/3/04)
#Jeff Frazee-G (10/3/03)
#Ryan Stoa-LW (9/22/03)

2006 recruits
Brian Schack-D (5/19/06)
*Jim O'Brien-RW (1/9/06)
%Ryan Flynn-RW (9/29/05)
%Kyle Okposo-RC (1/16/05)
%Erik Johnson-RD (8/23/04)

2007 recruits
Sam Lofquist-D
Jordan Schroeder-RC (heck Schroeder's linemate Kristo is still playing for UND)

There's at least one NC that left the school in that group. Yet for 2009-2010...Nick Leddy is the only star recruit to leave uber early. Big difference and it shows on the ice.

Although I would say, 2 NCs every 13 years would be great.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

So we need to recruit better role players is what you are saying.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

Could be you are saying this sarcastically. I don't know. But he has had a pretty good run here. Most programs would kill to have the success we have had since Lucia came here. Put it this way... UND has no NCAA titles since Lucia's first year. A lot of other teams have gone empty handed too. So I think he's had a good run.

The main problem was he made the wrong choice on who to align himself with in the Hill vs. Guentzel fiasco. I think the results this year clearly show his worst decision in his time with the Gophers was picking Hill over Guentzel. He could have saved himself (and the rest of Gopher fans) a lot of problems if he had done the opposite of that.

Re: 2011-12 MN Gophers Season Thread Pt II: Still Full Of Pride!

No, I'm saying its been nearly a decade. Time to deliver a title or we find someone who can.
