2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Didnt the U say it was not economically feasible to do a game at TCF? I thought I read they concluded it would not make enough money to be a good idea. (came up around the time of last years hockey Day in MN)

I don't remember this at all. Here's the problem: The U dug itself into this hole by trying to save money on the upfront costs of TCF. They decided they didn't want to pay the costs to winterize the stadium while it was being built. The original designers way back in the day warned the U about the costs in the future to renovate the stadium. The U balked and said it wasn't worth the money.

Enter 2010: Without going into too much detail, we came up with a price for winter renovations. It was a bit steep. However, these are one-time costs. The U would pay these and just working on the back of an envelope, the U would recoup the costs with three to four outdoor games. If that.

I think it's safe to say this team no longer lacks snipers. If they improve the tape-to-tape as well as the PP this team should be much more enterntaining this year. And before someone reminds me that it was only SH that they played last night I will say that there's no way last year's team wins this game 9-0.

After the first period ended only 1-0 I told one of my friends during the intermission that I feared this Gopher team was again going to have a problem scoring goals. Now I'm hoping that last night's scoring outburst wasn't an aberration and it proves to be a harbinger of things to come.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I am here to file a complaint with the one who started this thread! Has Gopher Arrogance fallen so far that you think we don't deserve a symbol at the beginning of the season thread? There has been one for as long as I can remember (granted, my memory sucks, so at least the last few years). That symbol makes it much easier to find the Gopher thread amongst all the lesser threads. So, if there is anyway to add one now, please do so. Thanks.

And, oh yeah, 1. Gophs look good so far, so optimism is up some, but still guarded. 2. Ness being missed is about more than his point total. 3. People are talking like last year's team lacked talent and never had a good game, but they had a fair amount of talent that rarely all showed up for the same game, but when it did, they beat some of the best teams in the country. So the biggest improvement I think we need to see isn't scoring (although that does need to improve as it was low even in the few games they played well), but consistency in effort.

Chat on....

Agree, but I'm heartened. Last year they would have sleepwalked through Sacred Heart like they did UMASS last year. That didn't happen. Trend line appears to be changing course.

October 8, 2011
Minnesota 6 Sacred Heart 0

For the second consecutive year, the Minnesota men’s hockey team took care of business in its season-opening series. The 19th-ranked Gophers, who downed Massachusetts 5-3 and 5-4 to begin 2010-11, polished off their second straight win over Sacred Heart on Saturday night, defeating the Pioneers 6-0 at Mariucci Arena. Just as he did on Friday, UM goaltender Kent Patterson pitched a 20-save shutout.

After falling behind 15-1 in the shot department early in its first game of the season, Sacred Heart jumped on Minnesota early, but could not solve Patterson to take the lead.

Midway through the opening period, the Gophers began to put pressure on SHU and at the 12:12 mark, freshman Sam Warning pounced on a Mark Alt rebound to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead.

Later in the period, sophomore Erik Haula scored his first of two goals to pad the lead.

The second-year center held the puck in the slot after receiving a pass from Jake Hansen and unleashed a shot that beat SHU freshman netminder Andrew Bodnarchuk stickside. Haula got the shot off despite being checked from behind by Pioneer forward Matt Gingera in his windup.

Patterson came up big in the opening 20 minutes as well, sandwiching two key saves in between Minnesota’s goals. The senior goalie denied Sacred Heart’s Tommy Castonguay on a breakaway and got a stick on a Chad Filteau power play attempt to reject a sure goal.

Just as they had in the first, the Gophers would score twice in the second.

Freshman defenseman Ben Marshall, who rang shots off the post twice in the team’s first game, finally found the back of the net 3:38 into the middle frame.

Captain Taylor Matson provided additional insurance 27 seconds later when Nate Condon sent the senior in alone on Bodnarchuk. Matson deposited a breakaway goal after making a swift deke to his backhand.

In the third, Minnesota, who hadn’t taken advantage of three power-play opportunities through the first two periods, made sure to capitalize with the extra skater.

At 5:32 with Gingera in the box serving a hooking minor, redshirt sophomore Zach Budish tallied his first goal since Oct. 30, 2010 against Colorado College after he missed the majority of the 2010-11 season with a knee injury.

Haula added his second goal with a minute to go to complete the scoring. Hansen recorded his fourth assist of the night on the play.

The line combination of Haula, Hansen, and Warning finished the night with 10 points on the night and 15 points on the weekend.

The Gophers begin WCHA play next weekend in a road series against defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth. The series begins at Amsoil Arena on Friday night at 7.

Sorry, new to this board. Tell me what type of symbol you're looking for and I would be happy to add it :)

Is there a tArrogance symbol? We need one of those.

Now that you've responded just look for the green arrow. So long as you don't frequent Sue and Becky threads it is pretty easy to locate.

Step 1 for the first three weekends accomplished.

Step 2 is to steal a point or more from tUMD. Don't get swept and don't look like you don't belong.

I would like to see 2 pts.

I am still worried about the defensive lapses one typically sees with young teams. Good teams will capitalize on them. Some of those we saw last year were the cause of uninspired forwards not back-checking, and leaving the second player to the net open, which we hopefully won't see this year if the team can played more inspired hockey, especially against the teams they should beat. But it is rare where a team relies on underclassmen for the bulk of their defense where you don't see some positioning lapses in at least the first half of the season. Guarded optimism though. None of the freshmen looked overwhelmed this weekend, although Duluth will be a whole other test for them.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I just looked through the articles on forwards, goalies and defense men to watch and noticed not a single Gopher made it. (Think INCH lists were the same.) Not that many years ago, you would always find a couple Gophers. I hope that by next year, we have a couple players making those lists again. (Not that I wouldn't be surprised to see someone like Bjugsted considered to be a top ten forward by year's end, or Patterson a top 10 goalie.) Used to be we had a D-man at least worth considering every year.
