2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

What do people think of Jake Bischoff? I think the kid has some major potential. Very smart player. Best D on Grand Rapids last year as a Sophmore. Not huge offensive numbers, but very good on D and has ability to get more points. Good skater, but not quite Dad's blazing speed. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Gophs offer him a spot. And from what I have heard, his younger brother has potential to develop into an even better player, although I haven't seen him play.

It may turn out differently but I expect the Gophers to be picky/patient on their next defensive recruit. You have to consider that they have 8 potential returning d-men next year (no seniors on defense) and also Brady Skjei and Mike Reilly in the recruiting pipeline. Even if we lose a guy like Alt to the pros, they'd already be covered with 9 d-men. I'd suspect that they are looking for prospect for 2014 (but could come in fall of 2013 if necessary). I have no doubt Bischoff is being followed but I would doubt he'd be the first guy they'd really want to land for the next spot on the list.

I've also heard mixed reports on Nanne from someone who watches a lot of these players and knows a thing or two and was surprised the Gophs got him. How much of that was payback for Lou's years of support? Or is there any truth to the speculation that Gramps is paying his way, so if he doesn't pan out, it isn't a loss to the program?

Nanne is going to be a role player type in college. Hard worker, fast skater, smart, a little bit gritty, and has leadership qualities. He's not going to be brought in with the idea of being a top 2 line type of player. I know grandpa is helping some of the financial parts of it. I would suspect he is strong enough academically that he will probably get some support through that avenue as well.

You know why? It's simple. No script, no superawesome design.

M.

Deal with it. :)
Agree, nothin better than the M on those sweaters!

However, I do like when they switch up the third jersey. The gold from a couple years ago with the script was pretty sweet. Anyone know if they will have a new third jersey this season or if they are just going to have the same gold as the past couple years?

Also, the maroon away jerseys do it for me too. The maroon jersey with the gold M is a thing of beauty!

Jake would be 2013 at the earliest (He's just a Junior this year) and I am guessing could fill a 2014 spot with a year of Juniors. I wouldn't be surprised to hear they offered him a spot partly because he appears to have good potential and partly because of the history. He seems to also have the personality that could make him a leader eventually, which can't be overlooked either. (Seems like a lot pf players already looked to him at times last year as a Sophomore.) That personality makes me think he is the type willing to do the year of Juniors and won't be in a huge hurry to get out of school even if he does take off. He is a defense first sort of player, so doesn't put up the numbers, but seems to have better offensive skills than his stats would indicate. Of course a lot can change over that long a time so it is hard to say. I would hate to be in the position of betting your job on how well you can predict a 16 year old will be in 3 or 4 years and beyond. (Then again, Lucia gets paid several times my salary to be around hockey, so I could maybe be convinced.)

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Gotta bump back to the first page.

Gotta admit the optimism is starting to return, but tempered by the play of the young D corp. Patterson is clearly more than just a capable goalie (loved the goal-line backhanded stick stop on the near own goal last night), but the D needs to dramatically reduce coverage and breakout errors. I think this is the biggest factor (other than some key players staying healthy) in determining how for this team will go. (And I still say Ness could have made a big difference on this team.)

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Although it's very early, tonight will tell a lot about this year's team IMO. They CANNOT play like they're happy with winning the first one and going home with two points! I would love to see them come out like they did last night and dominate the first period, but UNLIKE last night not look like a different team the second half of the game. We'll see what happens...

If they don't get blown out of the building, and show effort the whole game, I'll be satisfied.

Let's take it to tDogs boys and get the sweep and 4pts...

I'm satisfied with the outcome! (Effort isn't enough anymore after the last couple years. I want a victory every night.)

Now I expect that. Stupid Pavlov and the Gophers being meh the last few years.

Nice sweep on the road

On to Vermont and some important NC games next weekend

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Great sweep! There are some things the Gophers need to work on defensively but I am happy with the outcome this weekend.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

If they get the D straightened out they could be frighteningly great. D is the toughest thing to teach though, especially with such a young d-corps.

Some of it was just trying to do too much and forcing a pass instead making a safe play.
Very encouraged by the play of Schmidt and (despite a horrible pass last night) Helgeson and with AHC Guentzel I have optimism for the D's future.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

One D bright spot is that I noticed Alt and Holl much less on Sat. :)

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Great sweep indeed.

Nice to see they didn't let up even after being down 2-0 early on, offense and goaltending seem to be clicking so far, just need to shore up that D now.

Vermont next, looks like they have only played 1 exhibition game so far against the U18 team and lost 2-1, not sure what kind of team they are.
