Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

TCF bank field also doesn't have a heating system under the field right?
I remember them saying something about that when the Vikings had to play there.
I would think not having a system in place for either heating or cooling could make it very difficult to put an ice rink on the field.

 LOL, you can't make this stuff up.........:D

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

How about Target Field? There has been talk about UND playing there, but no talk about the Gophers. How embarrassing would it be to this program to NOT be the first team to play an outdoor game here.

Maturi might be a nice guy, but he is a brutal AD for our revenue sports.

UND will play outdoors at Target Field when pigs fly.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

He does have a point if he meant heating systems for concessions, bathrooms, ect... But you're right, not for the field. The point is to have the field cold, and the system for maintaining ice temp is brought in. Still doesn't change the fact that Target Field has more than adequate systems in place for heating the bathrooms and concessions and they were able to pull a Vikings game off there without incident.

I'll move on because it's game day and I'm pumped, but this just irks me.

He is a she (or so the rumor says). She said "doesn't have a heating system under the field". Which doesn't sound to me like it's about the bathrooms.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Haven't the Twins been very adamant that nothing but baseball will ever take place at Target Field?

Interesting.

I don't think it is just Maturi though, I seem to remember Lucia commenting that he thought the outdoor games were a gimmick. I am inclined to agree.

I don't think they are something you do every year, but they can be fun every once in a while. It's a return to the way the game started, and I think it would be a blast to attend. Make it part of Hockey Day Minnesota and have it be a day long event.

And I blame everything on Maturi :)

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I don't know what to think of it. The mere fact that he even suggested UND over UMN irritates me.

I chose not to pay 2.95 to a grand forks paper to read the article, but unless UND was going to play the Gophers, no way in heck is that happening, at least for sure not before the Gophers have their "outdoor game". Can't think of another way to better **** off our whole state, and probably get your stadium burnt down. (ok, it's made of cement and glass, but you get my point).

Agreed. It would be a huge slap in the face. But St. Peter is a UND alum, so perhaps he is dumb enough to do it.

Huh?? Why would that have anything to do with it? They put in a portable system and rink to have ice for about 24-48 hours, it's not like they have to heat the field to prevent permafrost. And it's not like they would use the field heating system to also freeze the rink.

Ok.
This was almost a year ago and to be honest I really don't pay attention to how it's done.
I just remembered something about pipes potentially freezing in the stadium, and it was concessions now that I think about it.
Personally I think the whole outdoor game thing is overblown to begin with.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Just saw that UNO is planning an outdoor game vs UND in 2013. If they can afford to do it, it baffles me as to why Maturi is dragging his feet on playing an outdoor game in the State Of Hockey.

He's not. Trust me on this. I worked on a project to help winterize TCF for this EXACT type of game. It's not far off.

Minnesota 9 Sacred Heart 0

The Minnesota men's hockey team began its 2011-12 season with a bang, blanking Atlantic Hockey foe Sacred Heart 9-0 at Mariucci Arena on Friday night. Senior goaltender Kent Patterson recorded his first career shutout and 15 of the 18 Gopher skaters recorded points in the victory.

The Gophers got on the board quickly when highly-touted freshman Kyle Rau collected a Zach Budish miss and slammed home his first collegiate goal 56 seconds into the game.

Minnesota continued its strong start by taking a commanding 12-1 lead in shots, but Sacred Heart goaltender Steven Legatto kept the Pioneers within reach by making some crucial saves.

UM got into penalty trouble in the second half of the opening frame, but Patterson was able to bail his team out by turning away nine shots, allowing the Gophers maintain a one-goal advantage heading into the second.

Legatto seemed to have the Gopher offense stumped by robbing Budish and freshman Sam Warning on back-door one-timers, but newly-appointed assistant captain Jake Hansen broke through 5:26 into the second period. After receiving a pass in the neutral zone from Erik Haula, Hansen streaked in to the SHU zone along the right wing and blasted a slapshot past Legatto on the stick side to make it 2-0.

Sophomore Nick Bjugstad opened the floodgates just under ten minutes later by beating Legatto upstairs with a backhanded shot, despite being tripped by Sacred Heart's Jordan Ciccarello.

Ciccarello went to the box immediately following the goal and the Pioneers killed off the penalty, but Haula made it 4-0 three seconds after the man-advantage expired when an errant SHU shot sparked a three-on-one opportunity for the Golden Gophers.

Minnesota tacked on one more goal before the period ended when Warning roofed a shot in tight for his first career point at 18:37.

After outshooting the Pioneers 19-5 in the middle stanza, the Gophers kept their foot on the gas in the final period.

Bjugstad notched his second goal of the game less than a minute into the frame, converting on a wraparound chance. Tom Serratore made it 7-0 with 11:25 to go, deflecting a Blake Thompson rip from the blueline through Legatto.

With just 3:45 left in the game, Minnesota had come up empty on all five of its power-play chances, but another freshman potted his first goal to stop that trend.

Seth Ambroz scored just four seconds after captain Taylor Matson won a power-play faceoff draw back to defenseman Nate Schmidt, who forced Legatto to kick out a rebound.

Ambroz later capped off the scoring with under a minute remaining. Legatto stopped winger Nate Condon twice on shots from the right faceoff circle, but Ambroz was there to swat a third rebound into the net under the sprawling Sacred Heart netminder.

Patterson finished the game with 20 saves, recording the team's first shutout since Feb. 19, 2010 when the Gophers topped Colorado College 3-0. UM held its opening night opponent off the board for the first time since Oct. 18, 1985, when the team downed Michigan Tech by a similar 3-0 score.*

Minnesota will attempt to complete a home sweep of the Pioneers on Saturday night at 7.

Didnt the U say it was not economically feasible to do a game at TCF? I thought I read they concluded it would not make enough money to be a good idea. (came up around the time of last years hockey Day in MN)
