Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)
Oh wow, I didn't expect to see people ready to call this year's team a squad of posers already.
Simple answer tonight, MN lost the goaltending duel. 2 of MSU's goals were being routinely stopped by Patterson before tonight.
MSU's kid made a couple BIG time saves.
Turn that around, and this game easily could have been 5-2 Gophers.
That isn't to say MN didn't have moments of poor play. A slow start hurt them.
Still too many mistakes defensively; the difference is tonight Patterson didn't stand tall to mask them like he has previously this year. Personally, I feel this is just an off night for Patterson and not an indication of the direction his play is going to take. But that's something we will have to wait and see on.
The more troubling thing to me (and really, the only troubling thing) is that the PP was again a non-factor (and even gave up a shortie). That is something that has to get turned around.
MN isn't going to set any kind of record for fewest losses this year. They won't even come close.
But I do think they are in position to contend for some conference hardware, and maybe even make a run deep into the NCAA if they peak at the right time.
If MN wins tomorrow night then I won't be that disappointed with the way the weekend played out. MN was the better team tonight, I expect them to be the better team tomorrow, and I expect a split...even with MSU getting a couple guys back.
If at the end of the year we look back at this stretch (split @ WI, split in a home/home with SCSU, split @ Mich ST) and say it was a slump...well, it will have been a pretty **** good year.
EDIT: Actually, there is one other thing besides the PP that I find troubling, although it is directly related to the PP failing to produce.
Haula and Hanson have done a bit of a disappearing act over the past month in terms of the score sheet. Hanson had a goal last week, although it was one that probably should have been stopped, and on a 2 on 1 that he nearly made a hash of.
Those two were both scoring earlier in the year, and they need to start contributing again. On the PP, 5 on 5, however they can.
