2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

HAHA....tuff crowd!
I agree. Gophernation provided what he knows. Quite refreshing since there are many who post "dangle the carrot" type info with the disclaimer that they can't provide their source or they can't reveal any more. Almost like they want everyone to think how important or plugged in they are. Gophernation gave us the info, provided his source and people slammed him for it. Let me just say, thanks to Gophernation for letting us in on what you know. While I hope your info is wrong, I appreciate you sharing it with us.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

In Fasching's last comments about colleges (at the beginning of November), the four he listed were Minnesota, North Dakota, UMD, and Cornell. Those may not be the only ones in play but I think it is clear when a kid gives you a list, he's probably only going to mention the ones he has at the top of his mind as serious possibilities. My suspicion is it will be the Gophers or Cornell.

Don't know much about him other than that he is a major talent. Is he friends with Mario so that Mario deciding to attend ND along with the TV deals etc maybe added ND to his list? Would be a bummer if Lucia pushing Mario to ND had the unintended consequence of loosing Fasching. (Wow it is easy to wildly speculate on top of other's speculation, isn't it?)

The information is probably accurate, but Parise forbid anyone provide some levity around here.

He's good friends with Taylor Cammarata, Vinni Lettieri and Lou Nanne.. Haven't heard anything about Mario (not to say he's not). I think he's likely to play with the Gophs just to play alongside his friends, (just shooting n the dark).

It has gotten to the point that even if they completely bury them tomorrow, I am not a believer.

The PP bricked, and the goaltending was subpar (two goals should have been stopped by Patterson).

There are worse things than repeatedly splitting on the road.

I know I am being a bit knee-jerk, but they way they have come out if the gate the last three Fridays angers me.

Jebus, no sh#t?

Maybe I was inferring his post incorrectly, but saying "There are worse things than repeatedly splitting on the road" implied to me that Bakunin thinks the Gophers will split against MSU this weekend, and it will not be that big of a deal that they lost tonight.

That's how I read it, and we can't count our chickens yet. The Friday Night Curse has happened before, and we've done alright at the end of the season, but it's still worrisome.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

In the '02-'03 regular season, MN was 9-6-4 on Fridays.

In other words, don't fret too much about this issue; it's a long season, and past teams (great ones) have had a similar problem.

It's frustrating to be sure, but people are clearly jumping the gun getting all bent out of shape over it in effing November.

I guess, I read it more as if they can get the win tomorrow that all is not lost. :)

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Oh wow, I didn't expect to see people ready to call this year's team a squad of posers already.

Simple answer tonight, MN lost the goaltending duel. 2 of MSU's goals were being routinely stopped by Patterson before tonight.
MSU's kid made a couple BIG time saves.
Turn that around, and this game easily could have been 5-2 Gophers.

That isn't to say MN didn't have moments of poor play. A slow start hurt them.
Still too many mistakes defensively; the difference is tonight Patterson didn't stand tall to mask them like he has previously this year. Personally, I feel this is just an off night for Patterson and not an indication of the direction his play is going to take. But that's something we will have to wait and see on.

The more troubling thing to me (and really, the only troubling thing) is that the PP was again a non-factor (and even gave up a shortie). That is something that has to get turned around.

MN isn't going to set any kind of record for fewest losses this year. They won't even come close.
But I do think they are in position to contend for some conference hardware, and maybe even make a run deep into the NCAA if they peak at the right time.

If MN wins tomorrow night then I won't be that disappointed with the way the weekend played out. MN was the better team tonight, I expect them to be the better team tomorrow, and I expect a split...even with MSU getting a couple guys back.

If at the end of the year we look back at this stretch (split @ WI, split in a home/home with SCSU, split @ Mich ST) and say it was a slump...well, it will have been a pretty **** good year.

EDIT: Actually, there is one other thing besides the PP that I find troubling, although it is directly related to the PP failing to produce.
Haula and Hanson have done a bit of a disappearing act over the past month in terms of the score sheet. Hanson had a goal last week, although it was one that probably should have been stopped, and on a 2 on 1 that he nearly made a hash of.
Those two were both scoring earlier in the year, and they need to start contributing again. On the PP, 5 on 5, however they can.

Along the same lines as the PP concerns outlined by Stauber I am perplexed by MN's weak (poor?) play during 4 X 4 situations. This is such a puck control situation, which MN seems to be good at a full strength yet they look really poor when it's 4x4.

BTW - I thought Buddish had one of his best games last night, nice to see his play steadily improve.

The last 3 Friday losses have all been on the road, not using that as the sole excuse but it's something to keep in mind. Split on the road and sweep at home seems to be the formula for WCHA success, trouble is we haven't had 2 games at home since the Sioux series. Plenty of home games coming up though, 7 in a row I believe.
