Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

With the recent results we have seen from this team, I don't think anyone should look past the purple cows. That said, coming back to Mariucci and putting on the home whites for two games should be a refreshing for this team and I fully expect a sweep(anything less would be a HUGE disappointment). Hopefully they can come out flying on a Friday night for a change and bury the purple cows early.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I agree. I absolutely expect us to sweep Mankato. If we don't, I will be pretty upset/disappointed in the team. If our squad wants to show it is back, these are the series where they absolutely must take care of business and win both games. No excuses.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I am going along with everyone here. If we don't get 4 points out of this weekend I will be disappointed. I don't think it is time to worry just yet as no matter what happenes this weekend we will still be near the top of the standings. So that does buy enough goodwill to allow a split. But I doubt any of us would be okay with that.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Marshall needs to step up his play because his positional play was horrible. Bad weekend for him.

It wasn't just his positional play. He seemed downright incapable of playing the body.
Not to rehash an old argument...but after the past 3 weeks, anyone who says we don't miss Ness is smoking something.

Don't get me wrong, Marshall is a very talented skater and puck handler, but he has A LOT to learn on the defensive end before he is a legitimate college D man. And that's not just based on this past weekend; he has had trouble playing the body all year. Ness wasn't very physical, but he understood how to mitigate that by reading the play and with his skating ability. Marshall is a long ways off from turning that corner.
Granted, it's not a fair comparison as Ness was a veteran and Marshall is a rookie. But in terms of this year, the point remains.

Someone put me on Mankato Meltdown Watch if the Gophers even come close to losing one of these games. The veterans of the board know what I'm talking about.

But what if we don't care? Melt down, don't melt down, I don't care either way. I care what happnes to the Gophers but I could give a rip if you can't control your emotions over a game played by 18-23 year old college students.

He lives in a ghetto apartment frequented by K-9 units and drunk beaners. It's not like anything of value will be destroyed if he loses his ****. :D

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Watched the Minnetonka at Apple Valley game last night and Gopher commit Vinni Lettieri looked very good. He had a goal and an assist, but had plenty of quality opportunities to add to that. Apple Valley didn't have the firepower to match up with Tonka without Michaelson and Fasching, and Tonka rolled 6-0.

I've said it a number of times too. Ness would have been the best D on the team, despite what some think. He wouldn't be replacing Marshall either. You wonder if he'd known Guentzel was coming if it would have had any effect on his choice.

I heard a Goph coach was at Grand Rapids game, I assume to watch Jake Bischoff. I couldn't attend so don't know how he looked in the game. My cousin's uncle's brother's best-friend's parole officer's 3rd cousin twice-removed thinks he'll go to MN. Stay tuned.

I thought that was the whole point. To have our emotions decided by how 20 kids we don't know personally perform on Friday and Sat nights in a game? Must have missed that memo.

One more thing. Anyone see the blurb on Paul Martin in SI?

Penguins defenseman Paul Martin has only been a minus player once in his eight-year career, so Pittsburgh G.M. Ray Shero and coach Dan Byslma are not worried about his -10 rating. Both men know that Martin is one of the best puck-moving defensemen in the NHL, and they rave about his speed and vision as keys to the Penguins' fourth-ranked penalty kill... .

Lighten up, Francis. (c) Stripes/Slappy :p

Grand Rapid's Jake Bischoff (Grant's son) commits to Gophers.

Guentzel did his job, apparently.

Bischoff said that atmosphere along with the school was what he wanted to be a part of.

"It's pretty cool and amazing," Bischoff said. "I was down in the Cities for hockey and was at the Gophers and Sioux hockey game. The Gophers scored with a minute left and the atmosphere was unbelievable. I was like this would be awesome."

Bischoff had the decision narrowed down to three schools before deciding on the Gophers. He made visits to the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Notre Dame as well as Minnesota.

Bischoff continues a trend of Thunderhawk hockey players joining the University of Minnesota. Patrick White was the most recent Thunderhawk player to join the Gophers and prior to that Dallas Stars defenseman Alex Goligoski.

Bischoff will be coached by Marble native Mike Guentzel, who serves as an assistant coach as well as Grand Rapids native, Don Lucia.

The Gophers have enjoyed a resurgence this year as they sit at 11-4-1 overall on the season and 8-2-0 in the WCHA heading into a weekend series with Minnesota State-Mankato.

"Mike Guentzel is back this year and I have heard only good things about him. He is a defensive coach," Bischoff said. "Head Coach Don Lucia is a really nice guy as well and I like Grant Potulny."

I don't know much about him, is he a stay at home type D or an offensive puck moving D?

Haven't seen him this year (only played 1 game) but saw him a handful of times last year. First, there will be no personality problems with him. He is a great kid who leads by example, not by being loud. He is somewhat hard to judge because he is one of the least selfish players you'll see. He is very smart defensively and doesn't get beat very often nor make bad passes. But when he does hold the puck, he also has good offensive skills. He runs the powerplay for GR. He isn't flashy but I think he has a ton of potential. Strong on his feet, smart and good hands. Not blazing speed like dad, but a good skater. I plan to watch him Friday and in some other games. I think a number of pro scouts have also been watching him. In all likelihood will play one year of Juniors after HS. He just looks like a kid with a ton of talent that hasn't all shown itself yet. As with any kid this age, you never can tell when they will stop progressing, but he has a good work ethic (got that from Mom) and lots of help from local talent. I am glad they got him. If he continues to progress, he'll be a solid player.
