From DGB: "If you'd like to make an offer, send it my way during the first two rounds. Seriously. Just come on over and pull up a chair. I'm going to be looking for something to kill the time."

I'm sorry, but I just can't help myself. :) Another goodie from DGB

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Considering Gauthier said on TSN today that he had no contact with Halak or his agent to even ask for contract demands between the end of the season until today when he told him he was traded, he must have been a mind reader to know that.

Or Halak's mind was made up well before the close of the playoffs, and the front office knew it.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Ah, but those magic beans eventually led to gold, no? :D

I do think it's fair value. Just my .02, but consider:

* Goaltenders aren't exactly at a premium right now. Plenty to be had via free agency.

Not too many high quality ones and certainly not many #1 caliber goaltenders that don't have large question marks attached (Nabokov)

* Goaltender's dont being back much in value anymore, anyhow. And why should they? It's been a while since a Cup winner had an elite goalie. Lots of talk during the playoffs about the diminishing importance of the goalie. Halak wants between 4-5M per year. You think he deserves that? Ask Vancouver how happy they are with Luongo's deal. Or Chicago with Huet's. Or Boston with Thomas.

Nobody likes paying a lot for anyone. Luongo's not all that bad and Thomas did have a bad year this year. However, of those you mentioned, only Huet was a rip off. I still don't know how he got the deal he got. He never showed anything over any prolonged period of time. The rumor is that Bowman is "taking some action" with payroll this offseason and Huet was one he was going to talk to (whatever that means). Bowman can talk to Huet all offseason if he wants. There's no way the Hawks are going to buy out Huet nor will they be able to get even a 7th round draft pick for him. He's got NO value at all right now.

* Lars Eller is a very good, near ready prospect. That's not hyperbole. He was outstanding overseas and he handled himself well for his first year here. He also fills an organizational need (Center; and one with at least some size and solid two way play).

* As for Schultz, a big guy who likes to fight? On our D? Yes please. He's a couple of years away, but yes.

Eller will make the Habs roster out of camp. I'm pretty sure. He didn't do too badly in limited action last year.

As for Schultz (a forward as was mentioned), he's a wild card. His numbers in the WHL are ok, but who knows how that will translate to the pros. He's run out of eligibility for major juniors so he'll have to be signed by the Habs. This brings into question whether or not the Habs traded for him in the first place? Maybe the Blues didn't want to sign Schultz so he was included as a throw in? Who knows.

* Once can not ignore the cap implications for Montreal with this deal, either. Halak would've cost too much. For better or worse, Carey is the man, and how much is he realistically going to cost next season? This gives them a shot at retaining Plekanec if they wish.

Only time will tell...but I'm not disappointed. Sad to see Halak go, but we all knew someone was heading out the door.

For worse. Carey Price is one of the most overrated goaltenders currently in the NHL. Everyone seems to question his maturity (look at the fact that he was shooting pucks at the Capitols in the playoffs and doing some fancy stick work to them as well). He's, yeah, I'm going to say it. He's the most inconsistent goaltender playing in the NHL.

That being said, you're right. Halak was probably going to be too expensive. And I think the Blues will find that out. Someone did indeed have to go, but I thought it would be the overrated Price going.

You don't have to be disappointed yet (if you are a Habs fan). Just wait until Price becomes the #1 goaltender again and leads them on to mediocrity or worse.

Some of the stuff reminds me of the crap that Tom Yawkey pulled when he was alive. Miserable bastiges, the both of them.

I think Down Goes Brown has convinced me to take the Leafs as my #2 NHL team.
It's funny. I check DGB before I check any other blog. He never fails to bring a smile to my face.

From DGB: "If you'd like to make an offer, send it my way during the first two rounds. Seriously. Just come on over and pull up a chair. I'm going to be looking for something to kill the time."

hilarious.

I loved Jeff Finger in college, but even I was like "the Leafs are paying him HOW MUCH?"

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

Preds sent Arnott to the Devils for a 2nd rounder and some dude I've never heard of.

One has to think that something else is in gthe works. Nashville doesn't have enough offense to be trading away Arnott, even though he's in decline.

I suppose Shea Weber will be thier next captain.

Arnott is making $4.5 million dollars, that's reason enough for them to want to be rid of him. Halischuk is a decent prospect and many Devils fans were eager for him to get more of a chance. The Devils giving up on him reeks of something being wrong.. Or they were that desperate to get Arnott back.

Same economic thing for Hamhuis as he was going to get a nice salary somehow and trading an RFA saves the Predators the headache of negotiating with him. Philly was sniffing around at him at the deadline and didn't do the trade then, getting him now gives them a shot at shoring up what could be a dynamic defensive unit next year. Getting Ryan Parent in return (again) is only interesting because he was a Preds prospect in the first place. He was very disappointing with the Flyers and lost his job in a carousel with Oskars Bartulis and Lukas Krajicek. Not good.

I like the idea of getting Horton, but not trading Savard/Wheeler/15th to Columbus for #4, then #4 to Florida for Horton. How about Wheeler and 15 for #4 :D

Wheeler and a 2nd rounder for Horton.

Too much?

If Bartulis and Krajicek were better than Parent, AND they weren't good:eek: , has to be better for the Flyers.

Provided the Flyers can free up the salary space to re-sign Hamhuis and to fill holes elsewhere, they'll be fine. Their defense with Hamhuis shapes up to be outstanding 1-5.

With Arnott, I don't think it's just about dollars....it''s about wanting to allocate dollars differently. Bob McKenzie recently tweeted that he expected more moves in Nashville. I can't quite see them going into the fall with David Legwand as their number one center.

Getting Parent does offer Nashville some insurance. While not at all the same type of player, it makes it a little easier Grebeshkov go, should they choose to, and use some of the money up front.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs IV: "The game puck just got Prongered"

While writing up team capsules for the Draft, I came across this stunning piece of info. Jeff Frazee is the only goaltending prospect the Devils have in their system. He was also their last goalie draftee taken back in the 2nd round in 2005.

Chew on that one for a bit. You know the jokes.

San Jose's Brad Staubitz traded to the Minnesota Wild for a 5th round pick.

Thus ends the Boogaard Era.

We got a 5th round pick for a restricted free agent that gets in fights and sucks everywhere else? That's friggin' hilarious.

Edit: I forgot about the 2 stupid penalty minutes per 5 minutes of ice time. At least twice he got nailed for a new penalty skating to the bench from the box.
