2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

I don't care how awesome your baseball stadium is, and PNC might be the best, you don't want to immediately follow Wrigley and Fenway. No way. Fair or not, it will not compare.

I think we talked about this before, but after those two, how much "cooler" can you go with venue?

Eh perhaps as a Chicagoan you feel that way but I don't really get teary eyed at the thought of playing at old Wrigley and Fenway. Nice historic parks, but i certainly think a beautiful modern sequel isn't that much of a step down if at all. In some way its almost like moving traveling through time. I don't really think moving it to a new football stadium solves the disappointment issue you feel many fans may carry. Outside of Green Bay there isn't really a historic park left to host this thing and who would be the home team at Lambeau?

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Rangers have to be in this game next year. Islanders perhaps? or Devils? Montreal?

Until the Rangers are a ratings winner... Why would NBC go ga-ga for them?

2012's Winter Classic selection is going to be interesting. Would not be shocked to see them maybe feebly attempt to go for the Big House in Ann Arbor and try to find a way to out-do what Michigan and Michigan State will do this year.

Ditto

This whole event is about pomp & circumstance though, particularly because it's Pens/Caps, Crosby/Ovechkin, etc. With that in mind, they can sell more tickets at Heinz than they can at PNC.

The view should be about 6th on a list of 3 reasons why you choose the venue.

Would the sightlines be better at a football stadium as opposed to a baseball stadium? Or, at least, fewer really bad sightlines? Seems like the seats are closer to the rink at football stadiums versus baseball. They played in Fenway, because when people think "Boston major outdoor sports facility", I'm pretty sure Fenway is what pops into their heads well before Gilette. One could probably argue the same for Wrigley. They're both iconic (yes, Fenway is "ionic") in their cities. I don't think that's quite the case with Pittsburgh.

Bah, like anyone in Minnesota cares about hockey! ;)

(Also, not like anyone in the NHL cares about Minnesota hockey!)

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Honestly, the coolness of it has already been watered down.

I found myself switching from this year's game to the LSU-Penn State game because they were playing in a mudhole, which now occurs less than an outdoor hockey game.

They've done both classic baseball stadiums already.

And if you're going to play in Pittsburgh, you play on this field with the possibly frozen river as a backdrop, not at the usual bland football stadium.

I'll watch if they play on the frozen river.

Outdoor game should be played in Washington DC on the Reflecting pond between the World War II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Why not erect a temporary stadium on the USA/Canada border with the red line deliniatinig the border?? One side of the rink would be Canadian fans, while the other half would be USA fans.

Canadian beer would be sold on the northern side, while USA beer would be sold on the south side.

Tim Hortons on the north, Dunkin Donuts on the south.

That wouldn't work. All the American fans would go to the other side to buy beer while all the Canadians went south to buy snacks. :p

And there' d be the inevitable tie-up at the border crossing as they checked everyone's passports and asked what they bought on the other end of the stadium.

Just think of the game play. You thought the trap was bad before, now they'll actually have to go through a border checkpoint to cross the red line.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

How long before Jerry Jones persuades Bettman to give him a game in his shiny stadium?

Who would be the Devil's opponent in this winter classic?

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Stunning news from Herr Bettman's news conference today. If the NHLPA accepts a 5% escalator, the salary cap will go up by $2 million next year.

He also says that Washington, D.C. will host a Winter Classic in the next two or three years and there's room to adjust when that can happen for them.

Also, the new schedule comes out June 22nd.

I have no idea, but I'm sure Jacques Lemaire would be weeping with joy if the idea was ever proposed to him. He would also try every possible to BrettFavre for one game, just to coach one of the teams.
