2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Stunning news from Herr Bettman's news conference today. If the NHLPA accepts a 5% escalator, the salary cap will go up by $2 million next year.

I cna't believe that the cap might go up by that much. Pierre Gauthier breathes just a bit easier today (though he is still in deep trouble).

So what you're saying is the Blackhawks might just be okay with their salary cap dilemma? Goddammit.

Also, the new schedule comes out June 22nd.
Could they also leak the Winnipeg one while they're at it, so we can all wonder "what-if?" :(

Air Toews

As pointed out on Puck Daddy... there are Reebok skates on the feet of the largest Nike idol ever.

He also says that Washington, D.C. will host a Winter Classic in the next two or three years and there's room to adjust when that can happen for them.
... until after global climate change makes it make any sense at all?

Yeah 5 years in this town has taught me that January 1st can reasonably be between 20-60 degrees as a high. Pond of Mud indeed. I imagine they'd use Nationals Park...

Outdoor game should be played in Washington DC on the Reflecting pond between the World War II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial
Just build a (tiny) temporary stadium around it?

Would be some awesome visuals, though.

or FedEx/RFK.

Not a chance. They're still boned there. So if the cap goes up $2 million, sure the Hawks are about $1 million under... With just nine forwards, four defensemen, and one goalie from their current roster signed. Antti Niemi, Andrew Ladd, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Colin Fraser, Jordan Hendry, and Jack Skille are among the notable RFAs next year. Niemi, regardless of how the finals turn out, is due a huge, huge raise.

Welcome to Rockford, Cristobal Huet.

What makes me ill is that some team like Florida, or Tampa Bay, or *shudder* the Thrashers, are going to give up good cheap farm club talent just to take on Huet's albatross contract. Err, maybe not Tampa now with Stevie Y in charge.

There's a couple of bad money contract goalies to be had. Huet and Thomas' teams would love to have other teams take them off their hands.

That said, I would love for Chicago to send Huet to Rockford, only to have a goalie injury occur and then have to bring him back through recall waivers only to have ANY team pick him up and screw Chicago HARD.

A-la the Wade Dubielewicz Islanders/Blue Jackets fiasco two years ago?

Sort of, except the Hawks would be on the hook for 2/3s of Huet's contract. I can't imagine that Dubbie was a pain to pay off, especially since he was coming back from Russia.

For a team that's hurting for a goalie around that time, a Huet at 1/3 of the price is a **** good bargain.

Absolutely, it's still a crappy risk for the Blackhawks though. I wouldn't be shocked if they bought him out in the off-season. You still get stuck paying for him but not at the same rate.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

My worry with Canada is how stale it could get quickly. Canda's available stadiums are all fairly lackluster. I mean were talking about BC playing in a Dome, Ottawa doesn't have a stadium that can even meet 15k in seating, Montreal would have to play in lackluster Molson Stadium, Toronto has two choices that aren't ideal (Rogers Center with the roof off and BMO stadium). After Calgary and then maybe going back to Edmonton, you're almost tapped out of the outdoor Canadian venues and somehow a rotation of 2 or 3 just isn't that sexy.
For the record, BC Place is under construction and will no longer have a roof.

But I agree in that the stadium situation is a bit different in Canada. No way Montreal would play at the Big O, Saputo Stadium might be the only option beyond some temp job somewhere.

Re: 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs III: "Don't Toews Me, Bro!"

Huet's deal is nasty, especially for a backup, but the one that sucks balls is Brian Campbell. You don't give a power play specialist Lidstrom/Pronger money AND a no-trade clause. Campbell's deal completely negates the bargain that they're getting Keith at.

Edit: And it's 5 more years!

Nice little upgrade to BC Place. Looks very European with the roof over the stands. I think the Frankfurt Stadium was the model for the rennovation.

The bigger problem with Vancouver is probably the climate. A winter classic in a 44 degree rainstorm turning the ice to slush is probably enough to keep the NHL away. Winters in the Pacific Northwest get ugly.

This

Heck, the lower half of Whistler/Blackcomb is frequently cement. Go down a couple thousand feet and they'd likely be skating in a swamp during a hypothetical Vancouver outdoor game.
