2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

It's my first trip to Philly...ever. I've been a fan of Philly's teams for as long as I can remember, but have never actually been there. I'm pretty excited to see this city I've had a love affair with since I was like 7 years old. Plus I'm dying to have a REAL cheesesteak :).

Of all the "touristy" types of places to get a cheesesteak, I try to stay away from Geno's. I think it's overcrowded and overrated, but it seems like they draw the crowds. Jim's Steaks is my choice, and they have a location on the south side of Center City on South Street. Maybe Swami knows the ultimate place where the locals actually go for cheesesteaks. Where are you sitting at CBP?

I work with a guy here in Victoria that was born and raised in Philly. Apparently I have to go to D'Allesandro's, but I do want to check out Pat's and Geno's, just cuz I'm in Philly and I have to right? I think my friend told me about Jim's as well.

I got my tix in 3 different sections. One game is in the second deck, third base side. Another pretty much across the stadium on the first base side. The other is in the outfield, because I want to get the full Philly experience and sit with the bleacher creatures.

Man the more I talk about it, the more excited I get. Can't wait for the 17th.

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Halladay gives up 2 solo shots in the second, but Howard and Werth tie it with solo shots of their own. Halladay then gives up a solo shot to Hart in the top of the fourth, and it's 3-2 Brewers bottom of 3. The wind is blowing out at Wrigley...er CBP tonight.

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Down 4-3 in the seventh the Phils had the bases loaded with one out and Polanco at the plate. He hit a sac fly to left and they scored two runs. If they can hold the lead Halladay will get the win. Pretty good game tonight so far. Fish aren't helping us out tonight as they are down 2-0 to Atlanta in the bottom of the eighth.

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Lidge closes it out and the Phils hang on to win 5-4. Atlanta won too, so they stay a game back in the division. They move to 3.5 games ahead of San Fran for the WC, pending their game against the Trolley Dodger's tonight.

Nice to see the offense bounce back tonight. Halladay was good but shaky as he gave up 4 solo HR's. The bullpen was great again tonight as Romero, Madson and Lidge were all perfect to finish this one off.

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

I really like how the Phils are going about their business right now. Last night (Friday) they won because Victorino hustled and the next two batter executed (as well as the great pitching from all 3 hurlers) and tonight reminded me a lot of the stretch run in 2008. Starting pitching that was almost always at least effective and usually very good, a bullpen that just got the job done night after night, and so much good hitting throughout the lineup that you're bound to have a big inning sooner or later.

I work with a guy here in Victoria that was born and raised in Philly. Apparently I have to go to D'Allesandro's, but I do want to check out Pat's and Geno's, just cuz I'm in Philly and I have to right? I think my friend told me about Jim's as well.

Well, if you go to either Pat's or Geno's, its easy enough to hit them both, because they literally have locations right across the street from each other in South Philly, maybe 2 miles north of CBP. Never been to D'Allesandro's and not sure what part of town it's in, but I would always take the advice of a native and take a chance on a place that is truly local.

The other is in the outfield, because I want to get the full Philly experience and sit with the bleacher creatures.

Doesn't matter much where you sit, you'll get the full experience. Mustaches, tattoos, foul language, it's all there. And that's just the women! :D :) Just kidding...

The only places I haven't been in for a game are the 200 and 300 levels in the outfield. I've had seats everywhere else, and like all the newer parks, you get a pretty good look at the field just about anywhere. They open the outfield gates 30 minutes earlier than the other gates (but keep the concourses closed) so you can get in 2 hours before gametime and watch most of the Phils BP, as well as the visitors. For added merriment, stake out a spot in the standing area behind the bullpens and join in on the fun "talking" with the Braves relief pitchers. You'd basically have to camp there pretty much from the minute you get in the park, because if you move someone will take the spot. You are plenty of real estate away from home plate as well and lose sight of the outfielders once they get fairly deep. But against the Braves that should be a sight.

You've been given some fine cheesesteak advice.

Pat's and Geno's are the classics that all tourists must try. They run 24 hours a day and in a 'gritty' South Philly Location across the street from each other at the corner of 9th, Wharton and Passyunk. Pat's is the original (late 1930s) while Geno's is the rival. You can do a taste test and try one from each. To get the true Philly experience, order "one whiz wit" which is Philly speak for "I'll have a cheesesteak with Cheese Whiz and sauteed onions, please." I would never have Cheese Whiz on anything else, but for some reason on the cheesesteak, it just works. You may be tempted to order provolone or american cheese, but those just aren't as good. Go late at night when the bars let out for the best experience. You will see lines at most times of the day and night but they move fast. You'll be eating outside on the street at either place, and spilling the hot grease on your shirt is part of the fun.

Jim's Steaks is also good cheeseteak and the place to go if you are touring the historic district, as it's a short walk down to South Street. You can eat in here.

Dell'Assandro's is probably the best-tasting cheesesteak of all, but it's far away in Northwest Philly, nowhere near the tourist areas or the sports complex. You really need to be on a pilgrimage for that place. No tourists here.

Another good place to try is Tony Luke's, which you can find on Oregon avenue right under I-95, not far from the Ballpark. Grungy and local, it rocks. They also have a great Roast Pork Sandwich with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe (greens) that is as good as their cheesesteak. And once you get hooked on those Roast Pork sandwiches, you can try the best one at Dinic's in Reading Terminal Market, which is also a great cultural experience.

You can also get Tony Luke's in the ballpark itself on Ashburn Alley (outfield food court). They also have Campo's cheeseteaks out there too, but they are third-rate. If you want to meet former Phillie Greg Luzinski, he's often there signing autographs and chatting at 'Bull's BBQ", also in Asburn Alley.

This is making me so hungry just thinking about it....

Really loving this late charge. And what's with this situation hitting? Love having Polanco and Chooch able to do the dirty jobs the last couple games.

Need to add a few things here. If you want to get Tony Luke's at the ballbark, get there at LEAST an hour early. Not joking.

Campo's isn't third-rate. It's definitely a step below the rest, but it's still high quality, and the Heater is good if you don't get there early enough for Tony Luke's. The crap steaks they sell at the generic food places around the ballpark are third-rate. Don't waste your money, they cost nearly the same as the great ones and are awful.

If I could meet a woman that knew and cared this much about greasy food she would become the next Mrs. Gounhwildcats :D. But hey if you're single...I keed, I keed..

Phils blow a perfectly good opportunity to move into a first place tie today. Kendrick pitched like Kendrick pitches, inconsistently. His last start against the Dodger's was a good one so naturally today he pooped the bed. The offense did nothing again, and the Phils lost 6-2. Thankfully the Braves lost 7-6 in extras to the Fish, so we remain a game behind.

Marlins come into Philly tomorrow in a series that starts with a day/night doubleheader. Minor league prospect Vance Worley may get the start in at least one of those games, with Roy Oswalt starting the other game. Florida is still dangerous, but no reason we can't take it to them in this series.

Man does this team have an uncanny ability to lose the same days the Braves lose.

Well they broke the pattern today. Phils beat the Marlins in an ugly one 8-7. Braves lost their second in a row to the mighty Pirates, 5-0. That puts the Phils up by a half game in the NL East. The Braves do have a game in hand now though.

Joey B had another decent start, proving the Colorado game was just a blip. The bullpen which has been so good recently melted down tonight giving up a 3 run lead in the eighth. Thankfully the offense has it's mojo back and was able to take the lead back, scoring the go ahead run with 2 outs no less.

Other than the second bull pen meltdown in 2 days, there's some very positive trends happening, especially offensively.

The Phils are going to need to get out of the score 9, score 1 pattern...that won't help in the playoffs unless they go to aggregate runs to decide the series;)

Well maybe the pattern is starting to break a bit. The Phils have a 7-0 lead and are still batting in the fourth. How nice is it for Cole who's been lights out for so long now to finally get some offense? Braves are crushing Pittsburgh 8-0 in the third so if everything holds, there will be no change in the standings.

J-Roll hurt his knee running the bases in the third inning and has been replaced by Wilson Valdez...what else is new?

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Leading 10-0 in the eighth the bullpen decided that this game needed to be a little tighter. New acquistion Nate Robertson proceeded to give up 6 runs in that inning. They managed to win despite that stellar effort though. The Braves are crushing the Pirates 9-2 in the ninth, so the Phils should still have a half game lead after tonight.

Ryan Howard was 3-5 with 6 RBI, and the offense as a whole scored at least a run in every inning but the sixth, getting 17 hits tonight.

Cole Hamels was outstanding again going 7 scoreless innings, and finally the offense gave him some support.

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Apparently Rollins was not feeling well today even before the game and was dehydrated. He tweaked his hamstring, which doesn't sound promising, but Manuel seemed to indicate it was more the overall dehydration. Tomorrow's off day is very, very welcome.

I guess I hadn't realized just how well Philly has been playing, but I looked at the standings and only today realized the Phils have the best record in the NL. Of course that was greatly aided by San Diego losing about 40 games in a row. But even with the Padres troubles Philly certainly looks stout right now.

And yeah, it was definitely nice to see these guys score some runs for Hamels finally. I almost forgot to put on my Hamels shirtsey earlier today, but remembered he was going and corrected that. Yes I am that superstitious. Yes it is a sickness. :D

I put on my Phillies 2009 NL Championship T-Shirt for the game today. I would have worn my J-Roll home jersey, but I don't want to have to wash it again before I go on my trip :D.

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

So I'm watching this Braves game on MLB TV (holding back the vomit as I root for St. Louis) and something keeps catching my eye: row upon row upon row of empty seats. All over the ballpark. Whatever the "attendance" will be in the box score, are there 15,000 in the park? The Braves are a fun team to watch, the best home record in baseball, an uncanny knack for exciting come-from-behind wins, and they're playing a pretty decent Cardinal team with a lot on the line for both teams. Yet no one bothers coming out. I know they've been good for a while and perhaps some people are jaded, but good seats have been available for years. Why is Atlanta such a crappy town for sports? Will CBP be half empty even if the Phillies are still playing meaningful September baseball in 2015?

The problem is, it's an epidemic throughout the majors. San Diego, Tampa, and Atlanta: three division-leading (or within a game) teams, struggle to draw more than 15 or 20k to games. Is the economic crisis really the root of this issue? Or do people just not care?

Cheesesteak is great, but man, I wish I could get a good Philly-style roast pork sandwich here in NYC.
