2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

I'm guessing a little excited.:p Nothing you can't control.

Things are starting to break the right way. We can really put a crimp in the Braves chances over the next 6 games. It starts Friday. Fightin's need to come out loaded for bear and live up to their nickname this weekend. No taking anyone lightly or looking ahead to the game on Monday. We can see clear enough from their last series how much damage Washington can do. Taking 2 of 3 from the Braves -- and in Atlanta no less -- should be all the proof Philly needs to be ready.

Just remember when you get to Genos, don't let them know you came from out of the country. They get a little wired about that sort of thing over there, but then again, most of their vitriol is aimed at people coming from places a little south of Canada.

So you're saying I should refrain from the urge to order in French? Ya, I know about the Soup Nazi style ordering they got going on there and have been getting tips from my buddy :).

I'd hold off on the French at Geno's. In fact, if you want fries, the good folks at Geno's may look at you sideways if you refer to "french" fries. I believe they may still be clinging ridiculously to "freedom" fries over there. I take it you have never heard the commercials Joe runs in Philly about the illegal immigration issues? I'll just say he's pretty "passionate" about the issue.

Me too. Where are you sitting? If you want maybe we can meet up pre-game or something. After we finish punching each other in the head (Frigging Terriers :) ), we can talk Phillies.

I'll be in 316, probably sporting my Halladay jersey, even though it will be Hamels going if we stick to the plan. :)

Ok, well I'll make my way up there at some point, say the third inning. I'm in 233 for that game. If I see someone wearing a Halladay jersey that looks like a Terriers fan I'll say hi :).

Hopefully gounhwildcats is enjoying the City of Brotherly Love right about now! Remember to wear a shirt you don't care about when you are sampling all those cheesesteaks!

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

So far I am 2-0 at CBP. It didn't look good in game one, at least until Jayson Werth crushed that pitch to center field. Yesterday's game was never really in doubt as Hamels was in control the whole way. Not much offense again, but they didn't really need it. My last game here is tonight, with Halladay on the mound. Phil's are looking really good, and Atlanta almost looks like they are conceding the division and going for the wild card.

So far I've been to Jim's, Pat's and Geno's for steaks. Jim's was the best hands down so far. Pat's is better than Geno's, IMHO. D'Allessandro's is tomorrow. I had a roast pork today from a small place in the Italian Market. Excellent, but I still prefer the steak.

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Hamels is pitching better now than he did down the stretch and the postseason in 2008 IMO. Has the command he had then and 2 more seasons of maturity. Hell, I didn't even mind the handful of curves he threw yesterday.

Of the places I've had "authentic" cheesesteaks in Philly, chain-type eatery or otherwise, Jims was the best. Swami was right about Dalessandros. It is nowhere near where your average tourist would go. I've been to a few places outside of Philly west and north of Roxborough, but never in the city around there. Fire up your Garmin! Hope the rest of your stay in Philly has been fun. We know the baseball has been so far. Bring us another win!

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Oswalt's ERA in Philly since the trade? 1.76 in 11 starts. Phils are 10-1 (he's 7-1) and if you throw out the first one he's 7-0 and his ERA drops to a sparkling 1.40. How can you go wrong with any of the top 3 starting game one of the NLDS if the Phillies hold on? Maybe go with the hottest hand (pick between Cole and Oswalt)? Or do you go with the guy who has spent most of the year as the number 1 in Halladay? Or maybe it depends on who they'd end up playing.

Phils at home for the final series against the Mets and Atlanta goes to play a Nationals team that took 2 of 3 from them to help the Phils regain first place. Could be a very fun weekend.

On the magic number front, Phils' # is 4 for the division and 2 for at least a WC. SD and SF can both finish with 94 wins, but since they finish the season against each other both cannot have 95 or more wins. If the Braves somehow overtake Philly for the East and Philly and SF and SD all have 94 wins, there would be a one game playoff between the Pads and Giants for the West crown. The loser would be 94 and 69, a half game worse than a 94-68 Philly team, thus handing the WC to Philadelphia. Far flung I know, but this is baseball. Weird things happen. How else do you explain the Phils actually winning a World Series???:D

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Playoff bound again. Sometimes I find it difficult to believe that the Phillies have been this competitive for this long. Other than 2002, they've at least contended for the majority of the season every year this century. Only the mid-70s to mid-80s Phils had a similar run. And other than the back-to-back 100 win seasons the 76-77 Phils had, this current run is every bit as good as that one was and has accomplished more IMO. If we can do what the title of this thread alludes to, this current edition of the Phillies should be considered the best one ever. Especially since it has been nearly 70 years since a National League team has won 3 NL flags in a row.

Hopefully our intrepid traveler (that's you gounhwildcats!) found Philly to be everything he expected and he made it back home! Or perhaps he figured to just set up camp at CBP and hope to score some playoff tix. I got shutout in the e-mail lottery for the NLDS but maybe I'll get lucky with the NLCS.

So far so good tonight. Through 8 and Halladay is mowing them down, facing the minimum. It would be fitting for them to clinch the division with Halladay on the mound. He has been everything advertised. Even threw in a perfect game for good measure.

edit; And there you have it! Halladay wins his 21st, facing just 1 batter over the minimum. Phils let the newbs (Halladay, Sweeny, Schneider) pop the corks for the first champagne spraying. Classy move.

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

I did get back home to hear that the Phillies had clinched their fourth NL East crown in as many years. I was pretty shocked to see that Halladay went all nine tonight, as I know they were concerned about his work load. Oh well I guess everyone can get a breather now that it's in the bag.

Philly was amazing. Easily my favourite city that I've been to in the States. I'm already planning my trip for next year.

LET'S GO PHILLIES!!!

He went all 9 because he was breezing. He threw only 97 pitches, and just one over the minimum as NDhockey said.

Really glad you had fun. Sorry didn't get to meet up last Monday, but it was another great game.

I'm hoping now we rotate 2 guys in and out out of the lineup every night, and then start all subs on the final day. If Halladay were to start again, it would only be for a few innings to stay sharp, but I'm not sure that they can work that into the schedule if they choose to start the NLDS on the Wednesday as expected.

Unless they want to chase the best record in baseball, I think we'll see a triple A lineup for most of the last five games. They are guaranteed home field advantage in every round, so they truly have nothing to play for at this point. I hope Dom Brown gets a ton of playing time in the last five days and maybe we can see what he might be capable of at the major league level.

I'm not a fan of the "rest everyone for a week" approach, they can get rusty that way. Everyone should get a day off or two now through the last game (which should be all AAA guys), then they get another two days off before the NLDS starts. If they want more rest, then there's incentive to finish the NLDS in 3. ;)

Well considering 90% of the roster spent at least some time on the DL this year, you'd think they'd all be pretty fresh. There are some bench guys and bull pen pitchers that haven't played a lot recently, so they should get some playing time just to sharpen up a bit.

I loved the subdued onfield celebration after they clinched last night. That was a team that knew it still had a lot of work ahead of it.

Got to be pretty scary for any team that has to face the Phillies knowing that they will face Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt. I like our chances :)

As per Philly.com, here's the line up for tonights game. Rollins returns for his first game since the 8th of September. A few other bench players in as well. Oswalt will start, but will almost certainly only pitch 5 innings or so.

The complete line-up:

Jimmy Rollins SS
Raul Ibanez LF
Chase Utley 2B
Ryan Howard 1B
Ben Francisco CF
Domonic Brown RF
Greg Dobbs 3B
Brian Schneider C
Roy Oswalt RHP

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Again from Philly.com, the Phils projected starter rotation if they make it to the World Series. They have chosen to open up the NLDS next Wednesday.

Here's a projected playoff rotation, although the Phillies could very well decide to make Oswalt the Game 2 starter.

NLDS

Oct. 6 - Game 1 - Halladay
Oct. 7 - Off
Oct. 8 - Game 2 - Hamels
Oct. 9 - Off
Oct. 10 - Game 3 - Oswalt
Oct. 11 - Game 4 - Halladay (Normal Rest)
Oct. 12 - Off
Oct. 13 - Game 5 - Hamels (Normal Rest)

NLCS

Oct. 16 - Game 1 - Halladay
Oct. 17 - Game 2 - Hamels
Oct. 18 - Off
Oct. 19 - Game 3 - Oswalt
Oct. 20 - Game 4 - Blanton
Oct. 21 - Game 5 - Halladay
Oct. 22 - Off
Oct. 23 - Game 6 - Hamels
Oct. 24 - Game 7 - Oswalt

World Series

Oct. 27 - Game 1 - Halladay
Oct. 28 - Game 2 - Hamels
Oct. 29 - Off
Oct. 30 - Game 3 - Oswalt
Oct. 31 - Game 4 - Blanton
Nov. 1 - Game 5 - Halladay
Nov. 2 - Off
Nov. 3 - Game 6 - Hamels
Nov. 4 - Game 7 - Oswalt

Good luck with that rest of the league :)

Phils are leading the Nationals 7-1 in the seventh. Only Rollins and Victorino are in from the regular lineup. Joe Blanton is pitching.

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

All the starting line up played against the Braves tonight, except Victorino and Polanco, and Kendrick got the start. Everyone but Ibanez and Ruiz were out by the fifth, and Kendrick went 5 giving up 2 ER's, on 5 hits and 3 walks. The offense produced 11 runs, mostly from the bottom of the order, although Rollins had a grand slam and Howard had a couple of hits.

Phils win 11-5.

Unless the Yankees (who were rained out tonight) sweep the Red Sox the Phils are guaranteed at least a tie for the best record in baseball. If they win one more in this series they are definitely are guaranteed a tie for the best record in baseball.

If the Phillies hold on to the best record in the majors that would be the first time they have finished a season with the best record. Hard to believe that neither of those 101 win seasons in the 70s was the best record. Of course, as a long time Detroit Red Wings fan, I have come to realize that -- in hockey at least -- regular season record is not all that useful as a predictor of post season success.

But this team seems built for post season success. Other-worldly pitching from the starters of late (hell, Halladay has been the least effective in Sept. and even he's been very good), an effective bullpen, and the major leagues best overall team defense. Throw in a lot of post season experience and you have at least the formula for a great October.

Forgot to ask earlier gounhwildcats, but did you get your photo taken next to Rocky? Did you make the run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art before or after? I did 2 decades ago, but the last time I was in Philly I decided that making it home alive was more important than running up those damm things!:D
