2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that is

Re: 2010 Philadelphia Phillies - Going for the Threepeat...of NL championships that i

I must admit I'm stunned. As well as the pitching was going to close out the season, Halladay throwing the no-no the first night out, that lineup... San Fran totally outpitched and outworked a Philly team that has to be scratching their heads right now, wondering what happened. What gets me most is the sheer number of Phillies who were awful in these 6 games (and really, in the whole post season). It seems like in most series, one guy on the losing team often stands out for the tough time he had getting it going. Scmidt in the '83 World Series. Willie Wilson for KC in 1980. Mr. May, Dave Winfield in the '81 Series. A-Rod in pretty much every one of his post season series until 2009. But we had so many guys come up small. Howard's .303 average in this NLCS may be the single most deceptive statistic I have ever come across in baseball. Every other regular in the lineup hit lower than his 2010 regular season average, and I believe lower than his career post season average. Perhaps it is a surprise they managed a 5-4 record this post season.

This team should look substantially the same next year, with the one big exception of possibly Werth. His playoffs performance certainly won't help in his push for that one last big deal. My guess is unless he comes up with the big home town discount, Philly will not push hard at all to keep him.

4 months until pitchers and catchers report. At least nowI can fully turn my attention to hockey. Last night was a great way to soften the blow of the Phillies season ending. And seeing as to who a couple of you root for in your college hockey identities, you probably didn't mind seeing how last night's game went in South Bend either!

That's as good an analysis of the Phils as one could make. As disappointed as I am in the end of this year, I am equally excited for next year. As for Werth, he had an awful year for a guy that is trying to get Texeira type money. At one point this year he was 1 for 45 with RISP and 2 outs., and his K's were off the chart this year. The Yankees are going to go after Carl Crawford, so unless the Angels or Red Sox want him I'm not sure there will be as many big bidders for his services as he's hoping. I think he could wind up back in South Philly, if the Phils want him back.

As for the ND-BC game, it's never a good thing when teams in your conference lose non-con's. That being said, I hate BC and never mind seeing them lose :)

This is why you all wanted the Braves to win in the LDS. And were it not for atrocious 9th inning defense, they may have. That likely would have autopunched Philly's WS ticket.

Woulda coulda shoulda. Let's all be thankful we're not Met fans, eh?

People are so lazy bashing A-Rod. Go look at what he did to the Twins a few years ago and his Mariner playoff stats.

Its lazy, and its wrong. Stop relying on ESPN and Skip Bayless.

His stats in the 2000 ALCS, 04 ALDS, 04 ALCS, 2007 ALCS are all solid.

Stop listening to Skip Bayless. He, like television, rots your brain.

I didn't mean to offend your A-Rod man love by understating his playoff numbers. Yes I know he really had more than just the 2009 playoffs where he didn't stink. But in most of his playoff series he hit substantially below his career average, and in 3 or 4 of them I believe he stood out for his struggles. Like hitting well below .200, an awful performance for a guy with a lifetime average that is over .300, or drove in just a run or two over the course of an entire series, also nothing to write home about for a guy who averages about 110 RBIs a year and nearly 4 RBIs every five games he plays, which is about the average length of the post season series his teams have played. I've watched him struggle even beyond the numbers in a number of his series. My point was that while it often seems like one guy can drag a team to a series loss when he struggles well below his regular season or career numbers, for this year's Phillies, the blame was widespread. I don't listen to Skip Bayless, and unless they're showing a live game on ESPN I don't watch much of that either. Don't pretend you know where I learned the game or its history. Throwing that out is just as bad as someone parroting some useless stat they did hear on ESPN and pretending they know of what they are speaking about.

I would suggest doing with TBA what I did. Put him on ignore. Just like trolls and advertising, he goes away if you do.

Disappointing end for the Phillies. At the end of the day, your players must hit, and the Phillies didn't hit very well. Oh. well. We Philly fans are used to heartbreak, so add this to the pile.

I think the Phils need to look at more than just Werth. I personally would keep Werth, get rid of Ibanez, see what I can get for Victorino or Rollins and get another righty power hitter and a real lead-off guy. If they send Werth on his way and put Brown out there they will be built to win the division and lose the playoffs again. Too many left handed hitters. They are going to age across the board and be in for a real downturn if they don't start turning over a few of the regulars and bring in some life, and speed, and on-base percentage, and protection for Howard, and ....
