I must admit I'm stunned. As well as the pitching was going to close out the season, Halladay throwing the no-no the first night out, that lineup... San Fran totally outpitched and outworked a Philly team that has to be scratching their heads right now, wondering what happened. What gets me most is the sheer number of Phillies who were awful in these 6 games (and really, in the whole post season). It seems like in most series, one guy on the losing team often stands out for the tough time he had getting it going. Scmidt in the '83 World Series. Willie Wilson for KC in 1980. Mr. May, Dave Winfield in the '81 Series. A-Rod in pretty much every one of his post season series until 2009. But we had so many guys come up small. Howard's .303 average in this NLCS may be the single most deceptive statistic I have ever come across in baseball. Every other regular in the lineup hit lower than his 2010 regular season average, and I believe lower than his career post season average. Perhaps it is a surprise they managed a 5-4 record this post season.
This team should look substantially the same next year, with the one big exception of possibly Werth. His playoffs performance certainly won't help in his push for that one last big deal. My guess is unless he comes up with the big home town discount, Philly will not push hard at all to keep him.
4 months until pitchers and catchers report. At least nowI can fully turn my attention to hockey. Last night was a great way to soften the blow of the Phillies season ending. And seeing as to who a couple of you root for in your college hockey identities, you probably didn't mind seeing how last night's game went in South Bend either!
