2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Devils have to cut cost now.............I'm curious if Lou has this already worked out. Suspect it's Zubrus ($3.4mm I think) or Salvador ($2.9mm I think). Some have speculated about Travis Zajac but I have to believe that Lou would do anything to avoid that.

Rolston ($5mm) could always develop Mogilny-like symptoms.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

NHL and NHLPA extended the deadline to get an agreement done, but it will be done, they just couldn't get it finished by 5 pm today.

My personal list of candidates to be sent packing by New Jersey: Bryce Salvador, Dainius Zubrus, Brian Rolston (sending him to Albany).

ETA: Deadline moved to 7 pm ET.

Two years, $5.5 million.

That's about 2.5 million more than he's worth.

Put this into perspective: He's getting more per year than Niemi and he couldn't even hold on to the starting role for one full season.

Carey Price: Overpaid primadonna. Sieve extraordinaire.

Feel proud.

Most sane GMs would have taken Halak in a second.

Halak has parlayed half a season and a playoff run into $3.75 million for the next four years. What if he's not actually that good? That turns into a bear of a contract.

Price, for what it's worth, I think has smartened up a bit and is taking things a bit more seriously. Halak might find out that life in the Western Conference is really difficult, especially on a team that is probably borderline to make the playoffs.

Our long, national nightmare is over.

Ilya Kovalchuk is a Devil. The NHL and NHLPA came away with an agreement at 3:45 AM ET to grandfather in his deal as well as deals for Pronger, Savard, Luongo and Hossa while now making it a huge pain in the arse to do those sorts of deals in the future.

James Sheppard, of the Wild, hurt himself in an ATV accident in Vail...and not a single Wild fan cares...

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

NHL 11 is out, and Down Goes Brown has an in-depth review. Two items stand out with me: :D

The game features a fully customizable sound system with a slider for each element of background noise. For example, you can slide the music from "high" to "low", the crowd noise from "loud" to "silent", and Pierre McGuire from "excruciatingly loud" to "oh good lord even when I turn off the game I can still hear him in my nightmares".

Gone are the days of nondescript pixelated fans in the background; crowd detail is spectacular this year. For example, if you zoom in on the fans in the first few rows of the ACC crowd during overtime of a Leafs game, you can actually tell which stock prices they're absentmindedly looking up on their Blackberries.

Fixed.

Bobby Ryan resigns with Ducks for a reported 5.5M per year for 5 years...

Err, scratch that...apparently not done according to McKenzie, who I trust more.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

The Thrashers have signed (or will sign) Nigel Dawes.

Rick Dudley continues his "Watch this hand, and ignore what I said three months ago about wanting to give our prospects a chance while I sh** all over their dreams in this other hand..."

... Don't get me wrong, I want to see this team succeed, but there seems to be a whole lot of double speak that took place, and the fans are happily eating it up while hoping that some of the prospects (Cormier! Kulda! Postma! Klingenberg!) all make the team with this new (and suddenly filled out) NHL roster.

Sid goes yard at PNC Park. :p

Sidney Crosby might have a career in baseball if hockey doesn't pan out.

The Pittsburgh Penguins star and some of his teammates took batting practice at PNC Park on Wednesday afternoon, and Crosby managed to hit a home run at the major-league stadium.

Batting left-handed, Crosby hit one over the right-field wall, which measures 320 feet at the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Oh hell no:

Andreas Lilja given a tryout by the Sharks.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Rangers finally get Staal signed.

I like the contract. 5 years, just under 4 million per..Right about where I was hoping. 3.5-4 million is a perfect deal for a d-man that doesn't play a lick of PP.

There is no doubt he's one of the best young defensive d-man in the game but what gets you paid is when you can do it on both ends of the ice. He'll get that in his next contract if he proves he has some offensive side to his game.

Doug Wilson really hates you guys.

Reality: Low risk, high reward possibility with Lilja. He wasn't bad in Detroit's Cup run in 2008 and they sorely missed him in 2009's playoffs. If he plays like he did in 08 it's a win for the Sharks. If he plays the way he did in 2007, you'll be setting him on fire.

Pretty much.

Plus it's the Sharks, so if I had to predict anything he'll earn a contract and play like 08 Lilja during the regular season, then morph into 07 Lilja in the first round of the playoffs. Or, halfway through the season he'll get blown up by (*insert goon here*), his PCS will return, and you'll never see him again.

Low risk and no reward. We have Huskins and Wallin, hell even Jay Leach, to already fit in the role that Lilja would play. He's not the top 3 defensemen that the Sharks actually need.

I have no clue what Dougie's trying to do, besides saying he'll play with 7 defensemen. So I guess Demers could be a PP specialist/occasional 4th line wing in that formation.

Jay Leach is not an NHL defenseman. You're right that Lilja is essentially in the same mold as Huskins and Wallin though. Nick Petrecki is a younger version of all of them.
