2010 Milwaukee Brewers - Pitching: Quantity, or Quality????

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers - Pitching: Quantity, or Quality????

Brewers come back from a 3-0/4-1 deficit to win 5-4! Hoffman gets save 593, kottaras scores from first on a double, when is the last time a catcher did that for the crew?
It sure as hell wasn't Johnny Estrada. That guy could barely score from 3rd on a double.

The starting pitching was nothing special, but kept them around against a good team and the pen was pretty darn good over the series. I think this was a pretty good sampling of what we're going to get out of the Brewers this season. Decent starting pitching (except when the current #5 guy goes ) and pretty good bullpen work. If the offense is good they'll do plenty of winning.

EDIT- stateofhockey, I'd say so far so good on Gomez. Love his speed, although I don't know how much of it we'll see stealing bases hitting in front of Braun and Fielder. I'm not surprised JJ is looking good. He's had some good starts in his career. One year I think he was leading the league in HRs on Memorial Day.

Love the Yo signing. When they know he is going to be a building block of this team they might as well not mess around with arbitration. I think there was good balance on the risk for both sides here much like with Braun, although it is looking like the team will come out ahead on that one. The option buyout isn't very expensive, so if Yo pitches well this thing eats up some free agent time nicely and he can still look to cash in around age 30.

Gallardo looked pretty bad on Saturday. He didnt seem to have the control he normally does.
Fielder and Braun didnt exactly do much to help him either.
Hopefully they can get it together and make another run at the playoffs. It was fun seeing my first game at Miller Park and my first Brewer game in about 20 years (never been much of a baseball fan), but its definetly not fun to go and watch my team get their collective butts handed to them...

Old baseball guys always say you win 1/3 of your games no matter what you do, you lose 1/3 of your games no matter what you do, and 1/3 of the games are truly in play. Yesterday was the loss they could do little about, Friday was the game in play they unfortunately let slip away, so hopefully this series is a little microcosm of that season long theory and they get their win tonight. I hope Randy Wolf is sharper than Yo was yesterday.

Hope so. That loss Friday night was a heartbreaker and it would be nice to see them at least take 1 game from the Cards this weekend.

It would be nice for them to show up when on a national broadcast too...don't remember that happening very often :(

Yeah, it would be nice. I remember thinking to myself yesterday as I was noticing the only sign at Miller Park that referred to any kind championship was when they won the AL in '82 that its pretty depressing as a Wisconsin sports fan that the Brewers havent done more winning over the years.

Hey, how about having Edmonds bunt with no outs and men on 1st and 2nd with Braun and Fielder up next.....

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers - Pitching: Quantity, or Quality????

Albert Pujols watched his opposite field home run a little too long. He disrespected the game.

Sincerely,

Tony L.
St. Louis, MO

Seriously, if the Brewers went into St. Louis and won the series it's all we'd hear about. We still might hear about it because Casey didn't put his head down and run full speed. They got a little help and neither side was flawless in the field but it was impressive to see them salvage a game by putting up a big number on Carpenter. They have to get Hoffman going. He's throwing throwing too many fastballs and having to work from behind too often. He just doesn't have the stuff to do that.

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers - Pitching: Quantity, or Quality????

Yeah, Hoffman almost blew another game. Clearly his fastball just isnt fast enough right now because both Pujols and Holliday knocked the ball into next week when Hoffman tried to fire a fastball down the middle.

Tough game to watch today, but nice to see Braun belt another one. Escobar with his 2nd error in 2 days and Zaun still is 0-the year. How long with he continue to start?

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers - Pitching: Quantity, or Quality????

Not sure whats worse: watching the Cubs beat the Brewers or hearing that stupid "Go Cubs, go" song... At least Braun is finally get his act together.

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers - Pitching: Quantity, or Quality????

Anyone here interested in some tickets to the Brewers at Target Field this year?

At least 100 games. He is, and should be, the starting catcher. Its not like he is having bad at-bats. He is getting some bad luck, hitting the ball hard, but right at someone. He has had some web-gems happen against him on more than one occasion. Plus, I have said it before, and I'll say it again, any offense you get from the catcher is a bonus. I want my catcher to call a great game and have solid defense over Joe Mauer-like offense. Do NOT get me wrong....if we had Mauer I would cry tears of joy everyday. But if you are expecting the catcher to produce at the plate, then you have bigger issues with the team.

I know which I vote for. The Cubs beating anyone is a terrible thing. If it's the Brewers it's even worse.

The catching situation is interesting. Zaun has had terrible luck, although I don't expect a ton out of him even when he's having some luck. If he can hit about .250 or so with some occasional pop it's about all we can expect. Kottaras has been pretty productive in his limited chances. I know why you'd never truly platoon catchers, but it would have been interesting to see a Rivera/Kottaras combo. Both show good production going part-time. Maybe their combo would have looked like pretty good full-time production when combined.

Hopefully Bush gives them 6 strong today. Lilly is the kind of guy who has given them some problems. Hopefully they can jump on him today.

I hope Bush DOESN'T pitch six strong innings today. He won't be in shape to pitch tomorrow. I don't want Suppan coming back one day sooner than expected. :p :D
