2010 Laura Hurd Award

Re: 2010 Laura Hurd Award

Say What??? Now you have gone and peeked my curiosity. A little stat research shows that actually in Peterson’s career ('03-'07) she had 78 goals and 107 assists for 185 points. In that period of 115 games, Gustavus gave up 164 for a 1.43gpg average. On a yearly basis, that ranked them sixth, seventh, sixth and second respectively in the nation. So from my perspective, she could score, better at dishing assists (duh she played defense) and anchored a pretty good defense. In comparison, the other top scoring All-American Defenders in D-III over the past ten years were, Jen Gorczynski (RIT '00-'04) - 126 points, Catherine Elkins (Middlebury '98-'02) – 108 points, Lindsy Carlson (River Falls/Superior '00-'04) – 107 points, Shannon Tarrant (Middlebury '03-'07) – 106 and Karen Levin (Middlebury '04-'08) – 100. That's some pretty impressive list of defenders to be leading.

Good analysis... but I know what Paddy was referring to and he wasn't just talking about defenceman. Give me a good defensive minded forward that can chip in on the offensive side, play the PK and shutdown leading scorers anyday to a kid that can just fill the net on the PP. Playing both sides of the puck is a unique ability and only so many players have it. These types of players won't get any awards or accolades from the fans or press but if you ask their coaches who their pick is for MVP, in most instances they will be quick to point out their best 2-way player.

Oh man...I may get bowled over by a bolt of lightening for saying this...but I agree!! (Take cover!)

Re: 2010 Laura Hurd Award

I think there were 5 this year. 2 forwards from the west, a Forward, Defensemen and Goalie from the east.

If this is indeed true, I'd guess these are your Hurd Award finalists:

Kim Herring, Lake Forest
Michaela Michaelson, St. Catherine
Steph Moberg, Plattsburgh
Jamie Kivi, Elmira
Isabel Iwachiw, Trinity

Great group of players. But, IMHO it still has to be Iwachiw.

Great group indeed...but there is only one going to the FF!

Kivi definatley deserves the nod as the numbers and her contributions to the EC program over the years are hard to discount.

Top total point scoring D in the conference...by a long shot in 4th spot amongst some of the top point getting forwards in the conference.

Top goal scoring D in the conference...by a long shot in 6th spot amongst some of the top snipers in the conference.

Top assist leader D in the conference (bested by only Buehler from Platty) and sits in 8th spot amongst some of the best playmakers in the conference.

Top power play point getter in the conference with 3 goals and 10 asssists and sits in 1st spot amongst the best PP specialists in the conference.

Top scoring defenceman in the conference with 11 goals & 14 Assists for 25 points outpacing the second place D who has 18 points.

...and this is only on the offensive side of the puck!

Defensivley Jamie was stalwart playing in front of the goaltenders for Elmira who combined for the best Scoring Defensive in the conference with a stingy 1.28 Goals per game. Plays the PK, plays the PP, plays 5 on 5, plays plenty of minutes per game and leads by example on and off the ice.

Kivi has been a fantastic contributor to the Soaring Eagles since joining and in IMHO is the most deserved candidate for the Hurd award.

Oh and ;) BTW...she`s not done yet...

Love the enthusiasm 5-4 but Kivi isn't going to win it.

It's going to be Iwachiw or Moberg.

Hate the pessimism Prez..but your prob right, she plays for Elmira who have been overlooked all year.

For what it`s worth...if by chance she doesn`t get the award well...that`s just a crying shame.

What about a team that has been top-5 all year is being "overlooked all year"?

Well I guess it seems strange to me but the Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, Goalie of the Year and apparent Laura Hurd shoe in's are all hitting the links while the Middlebury/Panther Classic winners, Ecac West winners and Final Four participants are boarding the plane to the show with a bunch of players that got dissed in all of the awards categories. I'm calling that overlooked. Doesn't really matter...this years EC team isn't about individual awards anyways, only the ultimate team award is firmly in the crosshairs now.;)

The Middlebury/Pather Classic and the Final Four appearance have no bearing on awards. Elmira did win the ECAC West tournament (after the ECAC awards were announced, so this had no effect on awards either). The regular season title, noticably absent from your list of accolades, was actually won by the team with the Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, and the Goalie of the Year.

Incidentally, in the SUNYAC men's awards, the Player of the Year, the Rookie of the Year, and the Coach of the Year were from Oswego, which won the regular season title. Noticing a pattern here? The team that wins the title often gets the spoils of the awards.

Is it hard to walk with that big a chip on your shoulder weighing you down?

No chip here. Regular season titles don't mean squat. Nobody remembers you if you can't finish and clearly the team of which you speak came up way short. Like I said the individual awards don't matter anyway.

BTW the only pattern I'm noticing is what seems to now be commonly referred to as "one and done-again"

Fore!

Which is why you are pushing so hard for someone for Elmira to win the Laura Hurd and why you're so upset with the ECAC West awards.

Try winning with a little bit of class, eh? How many goals did you score for Elmira this year again?
