2010 Laura Hurd Award

Re: 2010 Laura Hurd Award

I actually think D3 has at least an equal following to that of D1.
If you follow the traffic on this board at least it appears as though it does. There are more teams than that of D1 and some of the best debate does surround the D3 scene

Matt -is there someone at USCHO that we could lobby to have our own page on the site?

I concur. It's time to up D3 Women's hockey from their present "Children of a Lesser God" status on USCHO.

Betcha both Laura Hurd & Patty Kazamaier would agree....

Matt...anything you can do to help?

You are more than welcome to write USCHO from the Contact Us page which can be found here.

I myself have brought up this proposal, as well as a few others. However, the site traffic and supporting content does not support it's own page. It just is what it is. Don't forget, you can not measure the number of viewers just by those who post here on the board.

Believe me, I would be all for D-III Women's getting their own page, however currently, the numbers are just are not there.

Another thing to keep in mind is everyone who works for the site, whether it be writers, editors, etc. are not doing this for the money or even any money at all. We do it because we love college hockey. Even if the following was there to support a separate page, it would require people to volunteer their time to add content to the site.

But certainly, go ahead and send USCHO an e-mail from the contact us page. It wouldn't hurt.

Re: 2010 Laura Hurd Award

Just to give everyone some perspective on this. As of 5:00 PM EST, if you sort each thread by the number of views they have received, here is what you would come up with.

This is for Women's hockey only.

Top 10 D-I related threads combine for a total of 434,652 views. An average of 43,465 views per thread.

Top 10 D-III related threads combine for a total of 207,404 views. An Average of 20,740 views per thread.

Another thing to note is that by sorting the threads by the # of views, I had to go to the 2nd page to find the 8th, 9th, and 10th most viewed thread related to D-III hockey.

Again, hopefully this changes in the future as the sport continues to grow, but at the present time D-I has at the very least twice the following D-III can claim. It's not a slight to D-III or a justification that D-I is better. It's just the way it is.

Matt, the one factor your stats don't consider, is that many followers of D-III (myself included) also read any number of D-I threads. However, it's likely that many followers of D-I do not read any D-III threads. If this were taken into account, perhaps the 227,248 fewer D-III views is really a much smaller number?

Just curious as to why you dont think the reverse may be true for D-III people reading D-I threads and vice-versa?

I dont think I've ever read a single D-I women's thread.

Nothing scientific, I'd be happily surprised to find out otherwise.

I can recall reading just one D-I women's thread in my time on these forums.

Re: 2010 Laura Hurd Award

Has a defenceman ever won the Hurd award? I see the past winners listed but less there positions played. Anyone know?

Good point. As with alot of awards, defense is most often neglected for the flashier, more exciting offense...even though defense wins championships. The defenseperson has always been overlooked and probably will continue even though forwards would have a tough time scoring if the D didn't feed them...and defend for them. :(

Re: 2010 Laura Hurd Award

I think Jamie Kivi of Elmira shatters those thoughts though....she is a very talented offensive threat, not to mention her superb defense.

This wasn't meant as a personal slight or endorsement...it was meant as a general comment on how defensemen/women are often passed over for individual honours because their skills aren't as "attractive" as the offensive threats on a team.

I can add that most hockey people will acknowledge that if you can play defense, you understand the game better and get a better appreciation for the inner workings of a game. (That's one reason I made sure my kids played both positions when they were going through the ranks. It made them more versatile, and better players in the long run.)

Andrea Peterson of Gustavus won it a few years back and she was a defenselady..She scored 175 points over her 4 years.
