2010 Laura Hurd Award

Re: 2010 Laura Hurd Award

Good! At least there is a precedence. That it GoJ, she's the only one? Is a goalie eligible?

They are eligible, but havent won

Code:
Winners of the Laura Hurd Award
AHCA Women’s Ice Hockey College Player of the Year
2000 Sylvia Ryan Middlebury Forward
2001 Michelle Labbe Middlebury Forward
2002 Sarah Moe Gustavus Adolphus Forward
2003 Angela Kapus Middlebury Forward/Defense
2004 Molly Wasserman Williams Forward
2005 Laura Hurd Elmira Forward
2006 Emily Quizon Middlebury Forward
2007 Andrea Peterson Gustavus Adolphus Defense
2008 Danielle Blanchard Plattsburgh Forward
2009 Kayla Coady Elmira Forward

If I remember right Beattie from Plattsburgh was a finalist last year. They generaly reward a career over a season, which is why I'm thinking that Kim Herring won't get it this year. I could see Kunzlemann from Superior being nominated she is one of the top goalies again this year with a .947 save% and a 1.22 GAA, but also has a career .943- 1.32 stats.

Who the ....is Paddy Gninell??? Guess I'm outta the loop..??

Ya typo sorry it's Paddy Ginnell. Ginnell was one of the most feared hockey coaches that ever stood behind the bench in the Western Hockey league. His trademark Black Cowboy hat and rough exterior struck the fear in many freshman along the way. His most infamous act was tearing all his clothes off on the bench and tossing them on the ice when he disputed a ref's call and couldn't convince the ref to come to his bench to discuss it. He was IMO one of the best defensive minded coaches there ever was.

Paddy Ginnell's coaching career spanned 15 seasons in the Western Hockey League, serving as Head Coach of the Flin Flon Bombers, Victoria Cougars, Lethbridge Broncos, Medicine Hat Tigers and New Westminster Bruins. Ginnell finished his WHL career third all time in most games coached, 963 and games won, 518. The highlight of his coaching career was leading the Flin Flon Bombers to back to back WHL Championships in 1968-69 and '69 – 70, a team that included future Philadelphia Flyer superstars Bobby Clarke and Reggie Leach.

Ginnell, who passed away in June 2004, was named WHL Coach of the Year four times between 1970 and 1975

RIP Paddy...

Great! Thanks for the info...

hahaha...omg...this is GREAT...now can you imagine some of the coach's we know doing this? AHHHH...look out...stampede...arena's would empty in record time!!

As an aside...my D's boyfriend was playing his first pro game earlier this year and his coach had a meltdown throwing everything he could get his hands on onto the ice...including sticks, pucks, tape, water bottles, stools, gigantic gatorade jug...it was shown on TSN several times. Needless to say all players were ducking for cover. No doubt this guy knew Paddy.

Beattie was not a finalist.

Kayla Coady, Elmira
Nicole Grossman, Stevens Point
Jackie Carroll, St. Thomas
Danielle Blanchard, Plattsburgh

This would be my guess at the top five finalists for this year's award:

Kim Herring, Lake Forest
Isabel Iwachiw, Trinity
Steph Moberg, Plattsburgh
Katie Stack, RIT
Sophie Leclerc, Norwich

My gut tells me Iwachiw takes it...but Moberg could too. Those would be the two favorites IMHO.

Re: 2010 Laura Hurd Award

Bump.

A little over one week until the award is announced.

Thoughts?

I still say Moberg and Iwachiw are the far and way front runners.

Herring, Kunzelman, Stack, and Leclerc might pop up in the finalists too.

Re: 2010 Laura Hurd Award

Get off your crack pipe Cubby...I mentioned Bowler after someone mentioned Moberg. No mention from me about any of the others.

Easy there Seymore butts...what'd it rain today in So Cal and you had to cancel your 18 holes? ;)

It was 60 and gorgeous in upstate NY today.

Re: 2010 Laura Hurd Award

Must be raining in SoCal...Seymore's grumpy again. If he can't cheat at golf...everybody pays.:(

Ha...am I THAT obvious...course has been shut down for four days for maintenance...and it's cool (60) and cloudy/rainy...maybe it's time to return to Lotus Land! Sorry for the 'tude!! :p

Re: 2010 Laura Hurd Award

"Any body can score goals...it's stopping the other team from scoring that's the key" - Paddy Ginnell

Say What??? Now you have gone and peeked my curiosity. A little stat research shows that actually in Peterson’s career ('03-'07) she had 78 goals and 107 assists for 185 points. In that period of 115 games, Gustavus gave up 164 for a 1.43gpg average. On a yearly basis, that ranked them sixth, seventh, sixth and second respectively in the nation. So from my perspective, she could score, better at dishing assists (duh she played defense) and anchored a pretty good defense. In comparison, the other top scoring All-American Defenders in D-III over the past ten years were, Jen Gorczynski (RIT '00-'04) - 126 points, Catherine Elkins (Middlebury '98-'02) – 108 points, Lindsy Carlson (River Falls/Superior '00-'04) – 107 points, Shannon Tarrant (Middlebury '03-'07) – 106 and Karen Levin (Middlebury '04-'08) – 100. That's some pretty impressive list of defenders to be leading.

Re: 2010 Laura Hurd Award

I'm thinking DePaul, McCall and Kivi from EC should be considered.

Five Four,

Not that it will happen, but you have no idea what this would mean to 44. Laura had so much to do with Lauryn going to EC. We met Laura and her family when we visited EC in Nov., 2005. That meeting clinched it for Lauryn.

Laura's Mom was at the game in Plattsburgh last weekend (as you & Sully now know...LOL) and told Karen that #4 was watching over #44. That must have been true based upon the outcome, eh.:) Anyway, thanks for the thought.

I got to see Laura's mom in Oswego last season.

I literally almost fell out of my seat when she came walking over. Didn't think I'd ever get to see her again. Was extremely glad that I could again.

Thanks for the story about why Lauryn picked EC. Laura was a tremendous player and person for the community. To this day and every day after, she will be sorely missed.:(
