2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Re: 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Earl is now off the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. My in-laws are getting a lot of rain, but it looks like the main part of the storm will miss the islands. We'll call them probably tomorrow when it's all passed.

which island?

Re: 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Nova Scotia has a lot more to worry about than the Outer Banks. The same could be said for Cape Cod.

It doesn't look like it will take much of a change in the predicted path to hit the Outer Banks.

Re: 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Earl is starting to look quite menacing. The Outer Banks could be facing some problems.

The is one could be a monster category 4 as it rushes by N.C. I hope it stays over 200 miles out to sea as it comes up by N.J. My last experiences with big ones hitting me were 1992(Andrew) in Miami and 2005(Charlie) in Port Charlotte. I do not ever want to have that again.

When Charlie blew in, our retired neighbors lost their winter condo in that area (like a lot of other folks, there were underinsured).

Fortunately, my grandparents were still living on Marco Island at the time. Since you mentioned it though, Andrew all but destroyed their old weekend project on Cape Romano.

Andrew has faded from a lot of people's memories. After all it has been 18 years. But that was a nightmare for me and my family. We lost 2 homes, one in Homestead and on in southwest Miami. Never experienced so much fear in my life as we tried to ride it out. Charlie destroyed all our neighbors virtually to the ground but for some odd reason our house held up well and we only suffered roof damage. I think going through those 2 has been enough for me.

Yeah, after seeing what Katrina did to NO, and then later that season watching Cat3/4 Wilma come within 10 miles of scoring a direct hit on Marco Island, my grandparents conceded that they were too old to be riding storms out anymore . Fortunately, they were OK and the damage was all cosmetic - mostly roof, porch, and landscaping.

Charlie was my first taste of a hurricane as we rode it out in Tampa where it was projected to hit. I don't wish it on anyone, but after seeing the destruction, I was so glad it turned before it got to us. Tampa is due and I'm glad I'm not in Florida anymore. The waiting for a hurricane is the hardest thing I've ever encountered for any weather situation. Thankfully and fortunately, I have never had to do any major cleanup at this point in my life.

I owned a house in Port Charlotte and took the direct hit in 2005 from Charlie. We were the only house left standing on our block. For some odd reason I only had roof and screen damage. Lost power however for 21 days. The area has not recovered but I repaired and sold 18 months ago.

Re: 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Major strengthening is happening now.

Cat 5 is not out of the question, from the weather channel.

Pressure just dropped from 941 to 932 Mb

And that's why nobody watches the weather channel any more. More hype than forecasts. When they had John Hope and Steve Lyons, that had tropical experts who gave you the facts, not hype.

A 9 mb drop in pressure over 6 hours is not "major strengthening." It's slow but steady strengthening. The recon plane also reported that the eye is open to the south, meaning that it doesn't have an eyewall all the way around. As long as it doesn't have a complete eyewall, it will not strengthen significantly. It's barely a Category 4 and only has a limited window for strengthening, maybe another 12-24 hours at most.
