Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Les,

Northeastern tried that and it got them in trouble :p ;) :D

Before I start getting the hate mail, it's a joke folks. :)

While not technically eliminated if Vermont and us both lose tonight, each game from here on out is an elimination contest. This team genuinely comes out afraid & scared against Maine for some reason. The final TV game for the River Hawks this season and depending on how this turns out, they may not get one (at least at home) next year. This is simply about pride now and to have Timmy sweep you once again for the umpteen time would not look good in any circle.

It will be interesting to see how many of the missing guys from last night will be in the lineup tonight. Bob mentioned on the post-game show that one of them was on bereavement leave out of state, so it wasn't all physical.

It will be interesting to see how much of our bandwagon student section shows up because the game is on TV.

You're being a little unfair to the student section. What reason do they possible have to show up to games this season? To watch a team that would struggle to compete at the D3 level? Students have better things to do on Friday and Saturday nights than to watch 2.5 hours of boring, tepid and uninspired hockey. That's pretty much the way things work at most schools who aren't powerhouses year in and year out. Perform on the ice and the people show up. Crap all over yourselves and gaze at the empty seats.

I agree... there's a reason MOST students dont hang around for years after... they are after, by and large, other things in their lives*... hockey is something they do when they find the time because that's the thing to do around here. its good that we made it that thing to do... but you know, those on the fringe aren't going to show up to go through the ritual of losing... that's just how it is.

---

Same with the other post... hockey coaches don't turn over a whole lot... I think that's a good thing in some ways... but I have to think there's more than a handful of assistants out there waiting to give it their go.

*If I were in the area I'd be at all the games... all of them.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

I've always gone to a lot of UML games when Merrimack isn't playing and always would prefer seeing UML have a good team.

I do the opposite when Lowell isn't playing or is too far away due to my job where I wouldn't be able to travel and get there in time. Both schools largely depend on the exposure of a D-I sports program to differentiate their insitittions as "just another D-II school". Without hockey, the makeup of the schools would be noticiably different. Hockey must succeed at these schools. They will never be to a level of BU/BC, but should be in the middle of the pecking order and from time to time make national noise.

You're being a little unfair to the student section. That's pretty much the way things work at most schools who aren't powerhouses year in and year out.

You're absoltely correct, it is unfair. That's the mantra of owing a major facility that depends on having a quasi-successful team to keep fans in the seats. Sure there will be down years, but you can't keeping teasing people with success and fall flat on your face. With the University owing the arena, it's a matter of economics.

I want to expand further on your point if a change is made this year. It's not because it's for a sake of change. The record over the long haul hasn't been there, the school hasn't hosted a QF in nearly a decade, and to the NCAA's in a decade and a half. There have been too many missed oppontunities and this season (despite the expectations) may be the final straw if action is taken. So my answer to irishfan is that if a change is made at the end of the season, it has to be for "a recognized name". For sake of argument even if he coaches next year, you still have the same basic & fundamental question: Are we better off with him or without him?

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Sigh. Can't remember when the last time we were shut out back to back that I witnessed both of them. Mathematically eliminated. Spring will start early again this yr.

Who's this Tim Whitehead, and why can't we beat coaches like that?? If someone is sadistic enough to check me, I have 29-8-3 and sweeps in five of the ten seasons.

Tyler Sims from PC shut us out in back to back games a few years back, but this was the most disgusting, dreadful, and offensive (as in P U) home weekends I've ever seen from this school in 16 years. I said this tonight during the game, why do we make below average Maine goalies look like Vezina candidates. I wonder if we have been shut out in back to back home games and I'm sure there are a few checking. It's going to get awfully interesting on this board and in this town, especially if we can't win against PC & UVM.

With the season officially done in two weeks, that going to be a tough pill to swallow knowing that the next home game that actually means something is eight months away from tonight. There's nothing else to really say.

what really sucks is that I have tickets to the Saturday UVM game.

He has beaten UML on the strength of his players and not on the strength of his coaching.

Lowell doesn't shoot enough to make any goalie look good. I don't know how we hit 20 shots last night with all the shots going into the Maine defense.

I have tried to say stuff to be optimistic, to be hopeful that we make the HE playoffs, but the nail is in the coffin now with UVM's tie last night. We will be lucky to see more then the season ticket holders, the band, and a few star wars characters in the stands next Saturday against PC.

Lets just hope we start next season with a new coach with a new vision and maybe some more energy. I think it is now officially the time to start up the FIRE BLAISE thread, since I believe he has lost all chance at redeeming himself to coach his final year of his contract.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Next Saturday is going to be the first home finale in 11 years that I'm not going to be sad to come to an end. Not going to miss UML hockey even a bit in the offseason.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

You can have him. We'll do an even up trade, you get Tim, we get nothing, fair?

How about we have the private $ that they were offering to buy him out too then it wouldn't be a nothing nothing trade?

Staying out of the fire anyone thing but couldn't help myself. Can't believe you guys had people actually willing to do that

I don't get or understand why Tim Whitehead is hated so much within Hockey East. Of course he was Lowell's coach before I attended UML but were things that bad?? He is shown by many of you that he is not a good coach. I get that but he's been to the tournament championship and NCAA's a few times at Maine a few times. More than I can say for my school. I know this is my first post. Just trying to understand.

He went to the tournament with Shawns players, with his players they've done as much as Lowell has, nothing

That's the 1st time it's ever happened. It's the 3rd time ever Lowell has been shut out in back to back games, but they'd never been shutout in back to back home games.

Statistically, this is now the worst home season ever (as Monty had feared), and even if they win their last 4 games (I'm not getting my hopes up), this will officially be the worst season in the history of the program. The 1988-89 team went 8-24-2. This team can only tie that. :(

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Sigh. Does anyone know what the bereavment thing is about? That stinks for him.

On a good note Carr did alright for himself considering he is rusty and he had some rather interesting D in front of him at times. The underclassmen are sure getting a lot of experience. I really like a few of them. The thing missing is the spark and fire. I just don't get that. In the runway before the game they were pretty intense. You could here a whole lot of chatter and yelling to get going from them.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Thanks. I don't mean to make people feel old. "Shawns players" must be a reference to your former coach. Forgive me for being ignorant. I've only been following Hockey East since 2006. I don't know who he was and definitely can't recall the history of the league as well as you or some of the others.

Two words, Walrus...check, please ;)

The Lowell Sun reported he was attending a funeral in Buffalo. I really feel sorry for both Carr/Boulanger this weekend. They were hung out to dry like clothes on a warm, spring day. The inexperience of the team, especially where some of them haven't lost like this before is showing.

Wow, the first post I've read asking who Shawn Walsh was!! Now I do feel old!! :D

PS: Welcome to the board....there is hope in Lowell after all in finding new board talent!!!

So, which is worse? Your pain or our frustration? In the end it probably doesnt much matter.

Sadly, my friend, I'm going to have to agree on both accounts.

Shawn Walsh was the iconic Maine coach who put together a string of amazing teams in Maine that had them competing for the Nat'l title in his tenure. Shawn was a very emotive and 'big' personality. During this time We had first Bill Riley, then Bruce Crowder and finally Tim Whitehead. Tim was up for renewal here and rejected the offer we gave to take an interim Position as Head coach when Shawn Walsh was Dx'd with cancer. Shawn died and Tim has been there since. Lottsa people upset that Tim is still there.

This leaves out the various editorial comments and opinions about ability, cheating, and all the other things people go on about, etc.
