2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

The Athletics website posted a preview for tonight and an interview with Blaise. Maine's a tough place for a young team to begin a season. It's definitely right into the fire for all of the freshmen that will be playing tonight. Hopefully whatever goalie is starting isn't distracted by hostile crowds.

My keys for tonight:
- Keep mistakes/emotions/stupid penalties to a minimum (which will be tough against a team that finishes checks in a building with a tough crowd).
- Somehow stop Nyquist (he's only the best player in the country).
- SHOOT! Maine's biggest question mark is goaltending. Test the goalie. Getting 14 shots all game will not cut it.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

final was 8-2. maine got on uml early, leading 4-0 after one and making it 6-0 before lowell got on the board. maine opened the third with to goals in the first minute and a half to make it 8-1 before lowell got one late on maine's backup... watching the game on tv, it could have been worse. maine had a ton of opportunites that went begging...maine outshot lowell 42-22

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

You say that like you had some other-worldly expectation of a freshmen laden team with new goalies going against the #7 team in the country on the road in what has been THE toughest place for UML to win in the past.

Now, I ask you, sir. What WERE you expecting tonight?

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

That was a tough one to listen to last night but it's early in the season, lots of new guys got to play, and it's still way too early for doomsday predictions. Thank goodness it's not a two game set in Orno this weekend, though. I expect the team Maine sees in February at the Tsongas will be very different from the one they saw last night.

After listening to the broadcast, biggest issues to look at for the week:
(1) Goalie preparation
(2) Defensive zone coverage
(3) Get the team to know that the first two minutes of the period are very important

Maine's a top team in the country and is very deep, so hopefully this game and a full week of practices will help for next weekend in New York.

On a good note, Ickert was everywhere and Arnold on the PP seemed to keep control of the game well.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Is it just me or did anyone else notice this too?

Vallorani -4
Scheu -3
Campbell -2
Budd -2
Edwards -4
Wright -3
Blair -2

Campbell's and Budd's numbers would have been -4 save for the points they got. Edwards would have been -5 save for the Maine PPG. Should these numbers have been that high (or low) for these veterans? I might have expected these numbers from some of the freshman that played (S. Thompson).

With such a young team, these guys probably logged more ice time, however, yeah, the whole team blew chunks last night.

The power play was pretty good, the penalty kill was decent, but 5-on-5 Lowell got absolutely killed. Maine was bigger, faster, stronger, and had more talent. This team is not as bad as the final score would imply. Maine, however, is as impressive as the score would imply. That offense is going to run up the score on a lot of teams this year.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Bruins' don't look good either..could be a long year.

I was really hoping for a better showing from the team last night even against the #7 team in the nation. While I'll be the first to admit that I didn't think Lowell would win, I thought the final would have be 5-3, 6-2. Let's be honest, last night seems to be men playing with boys.

Sure, there were plenty of freshmen mistakes, but I was very disappointed in the play of most of the upperclassmen which I thought were nothing short of awful. The defense was so bad, they may have to go back to the drawing board this week. Let's not take anything away from Maine, even with last year team, we probably still would have lost. I would not be surprised at a deep postseason run for them if Sirman is as good as he was last night. Wasn't tested but made the saves when he had to.

Plus/minus can be a deceptive stat as a previous poster mentioned. However, your best players are generally going to lead off a period and when you give up four goals in the first 90 seconds of a period, that's a stat that can't be ignored.

The movement of Lowell's power play was excellent for the most part last night, especially before the game turned into a rout. However, it's the same problem of not being to cash in on one or two of those chances. Had they scored on the first power play, it would have been 2-1 and who knows what difference that may have had.

We are in the same boat Maine was three years ago. The difference over the past ten is that the Maine's of the world seem to weather the storm better than Lowell. I'm expecting much more from the upperclassmen next week in NY. If they fail to get a win next week, it could be trouble. I'm hoping that Maine is that good (they are) and we aren't that bad.

Finally, for the "Bob Lobel" stats of the night...

The Maine announcers on the video feed made a big deal about Tim Whitehead getting his 200th at Maine last night. His record against Lowell (if I did the math right) since getting "fired"; (27-8-1, .764). Another way to look at it is that 13.5% of his total wins have come against us. So I don't violate USCHO rules, payback is a "bee-itch", isn't it.

Carr played that game like it was the biggest game of life... the problem is that it wasn't and it won't be (at least I hope not)... so it looks like nerves are going to be an issue. (I assume Blaise sent him out figuring he's the provisional #1.)

Bottom line.... Maine took advantage of defensive weaknesses. If we don't tighten up then offensive skilled teams will be able to hang 8's and 9's on us. Especially since other teams will be getting game tapes down the road. For some, yes, it'll be an adjustment to the NCAA... for Maury Edwards... the ECHL will be happy to have a 2nd d-pair guy like him. Being an offensive sniper is not a defining quality... its a feature.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

did anyone notice Boulanger was getting up real slow in the middle of the 2nd period. everytime he went down he struggled to get back up. He wasn't as quick as a goalie should be. Im not worried but i thought Heffron could of logged in some minutes in the 3rd period.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

That team, that place, that rink... all between the ears boys... yes, Maine is good, yes, we're not... but I don't want to hear about how we can never win up there... are we unfortunate up there... yes, we've had a bad run of luck. I don't want to hear how it can't be done.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

UConn managed a 3-3 tie in Orno last night. Not sure how UConn is supposed to be this year, but from what I hear, the flow was similar to the Lowell game except that the UConn goalie stood on his head and Maine hit the post a bunch of times and didn't capitalize on every chance that the team had like it did on Friday. Just shows that anything can happen on any given night.

Next week's opponents didn't have great a great weekend. Niagra gave up a two goal lead, went down by one, then came back to tie Merrimack 4-4.

RIT lost to a pair of good WCHA opponents in Omaha at the Maverick Stampede. Friday was 3-1 vs. St. Cloud and Saturday was 5-3 vs. UNO.

Will remain optimistic so I think Lowell will take at least one next weekend.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

ALBANY, NY — Adirondack Phantoms’ Ben Holmstrom’s goal with 8:08 remaining in the third period spoiled the Albany Devils’ Opening Night on Saturday in front of 5,235 fans in the Times Union Center. The Phantoms’ claimed a 5-3 win during the first of 12 meetings between the two teams. Albany is now 0-1-0-0, while Adirondack improves to 1-1-0-0.

Way to go Ben, another way UML can keep burning the Devils.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Hopefully the crowd in Maine got the team used to playing in front of hostile fans. This weekend's RIT game is homecoming/family weekend and will be played at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester. I'm not sure if they're going to sell out, but the rink holds 11,000 for hockey and RIT has a good following.

A good showing against Niagra is the first challenge, though. A solid performance Friday would surely start the weekend off right.
