2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

My personal thoughts about today's game,

Overall:

Wasn't perfect, wasn't a disaster, but there was a lot of good vibes to take from the game, if not this year, in the next couple. Certainly, there was some good execution on the goals but some awful defensive lapses that in HE play would have lead to at least a couple of goals for the bad guys. There is obviously a lot of work that needs to be done.

Indivduals:

Shayne Thompson had a tremendous game for the freshmen class, this kid was everywhere and did nothing but positive things. Some real potential here. Should be on the 3rd or 4th line on Friday in my mind.

Derek Arnold looks like the real deal with a nice move on the second goal.

Chris Ickert and Patrick Cey had decent games.

Riley Wetmore had a two point night, what else can you say.

Goalies:

We will find out on Friday night how the goalie situation will pan out. As mentioned not a lot of chances. Carr in my mind is the most polished and ready of the three that started today. A big boy, 6-2 - 200, made a couple of good stops. I'll be very interested on how he performs on Friday night as I would be surprised if he doesn't get the start.

Defense:

Kind of as I expected, you know what you will get with Blair/Edwards but still a lot of work and unknowns, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Skating:

Definitely, this is a much improved skating team. There was a real difference in speed between the X-Men and River Hawks that led to a lot of sloppy play. Being in the Tsongas for the first time in true game conditions for many of the guys also led to this.

Special Teams:

Gulp. That's all I'll say...needs a bit of work (understatement), especially the PK. That's going to be scary for the first semester.

Rules:

Hate the no-icing on PK; love the hybrid icing (when actually called correctly).

Five days to go before we play for real. It will be a very interesting game on Friday and will probably watch if streamed. To quote a famous referee...let's get it on!

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

was there a WUML feed? I had a terrible time raising it where I was... granted, I was trying to raise in the bottom of a bar in basement... just verifying.

I was also looking for the UML feed last night and was unable to get it to work, both from the UML Athletics website and the WUML website. I thought it might just be my internet because I'm trying to get it from overseas. Hopefully it will be working by this weekend.

Unrelated: Started grad school at UML (online classes because I'm in the military and travel a LOT) last year, listened to all the games online, was even able to go to one, and have started becomong a fan. First time poster on USCHO, am looking forward to listening to the games this year.

Welcome to you!
Where are posted?

John- great recap. Didn't see much of the game but we looked faster and seemed to be able to anticipate each other more than I expected. We had to leave after the first period to go to Lil's game. They lost, which lead to grumpiness, and then we came back after for the cook out thing. Missed all of that except the guys rushing to the food line. Did anyone say anything interesting?

After that we went to another Lil game. This was a win Lil got the GWG which was exciting but the play seemed so s...l...o...w after watching the big boys.
Every yr I need to relearn to shift gears. I have the worst time following the big boys the first few games. Much faster. :p

Welcome to you!
Where are posted?

Supposed to be stationed in Norfolk, VA but the Navy, in its infinite wisdom threw me an unexpected curveball and sent me to Qatar for a year. Here until July. Not much hockey out here.

Has anyone seen a boradcast on B2? I was thinking about getting a season pass but I wasn't sure if the video/audio quality was worth it or if I'd just end up streaming the audio for free instead.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

I was very happy with the results yesterday. All three goalies looked solid out there and Arnold's goal was a thing of beauty. The scoreboard is awesome and will be even better when they have more than one cameraman doing the replays.. I have to wonder if the new Talon Club and Chancellor's Suite will be ready in time for Providence. I don't know much about construction, but if they get it done, it looks to me like they'll be putting in the last screws at 6:50 on opening night!

Planning on making my first trip to Maine this Friday to cross off my last Hockey East rink. Been meaning to get up there for years.. Anybody else going? Any recommendations for food/drink? Thanks!

Qatar sure is a curve ball!!

I was not that thrilled with B2. I have DSL and it caught sometimes. I also didn't like the home announcers. I would listen to the radio and watch B2 for the visual. Only problem was the radio was 2 seconds faster.

no better no worse than some of the others out there... it sometimes can cut out and you'll have to dig up the retrieval link from the e-mail. I'd spring for it... in fact I probably will... I want to see if they allow to watch games after they are over as I don't get out of gym/work until like 8PM and home until 9PM on Fridays.

What was that quote of Blaise's that was in the NESN video last season? He was yelling something to his players on the bench.

Thanks! As for the BC connection, my old man went to BC so, as soon as I could walk, we went to two or three games every season so I grew up a BC and Hockey East fan. He's also like a FF priority 12 so I've been able to go to a few of those over the last decade or so (including Detroit last year which wasn't as bad as a lot of people said it was - kudos to the RIT fans). Started really becoming a Lowell fan when I began attending before last season. Was even able to go to a game last year and can't wait to see the rink with the renovations and scoreboard.

In case anyone wanted to know/didn't know, the media guide posted on the hockey page on athletics website and has some good info.

The arena is going to look pretty sweet. Are you following the blog about the revovations?
We need to rid you of the BC disease. Anyone can be a BC fan- no angst in there at all. Kind of like Hockey fan 'lite'. Here we have anticipation, disappointment, underdogness and sometimes a huge high when we are winning~ kinda like being a Red Sox fan before they finally won the world series.:p

Thankfully we still don't have the pink hats. :D

BTW, for those that don't pay attention, I'm not sure what MC's doing, but they're doing it well right now. They've picked up 3 recruits for 2013 (one is for 13 or 14) in the last 5 days, all from the BCHL. One is a younger brother to a '11 commit, but the other two were both on the 2010 U17 BC Team. All three are '94 DOBs. Impressive.

The construction blog on the athletics website has been fun to read a couple times a week over the summer. Nice to read about some hockey to break the monotony of the offseason.

Speaking of the athletics site, it looks like they've been at work updating the hockey page. In addition to the media guide, there's also a new wallpaper, a Center Ice Club form, hockey is featured in the River Hawk Report this week, and (most importantly for those who want to listen to the games) the WUML links have been repaired. Are they doing the coach's show on the radio? I caught a few of them last year but don't remember what night they were on.

First, thanks for serving ... there's nothing else I can say that can quite say it except "Thank you."

Second, it used to be Tuesday nights. Haven't heard anything yet about this year.

Compared to other Hockey East rinks where does the new and much improved Tsongas rank?
