2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Save Merrimack's steal of a point at Agganis, one couldn't have asked for a better night in across the bottom half of Hockey East if you are a Lowell fan.

That is the absolute truth. Zero points were earned by any of the three teams under Lowell in the standings while Lowell gets the weekend to recover. It's no fun that each of those teams has three games in hand compared to the River Hawks, but it's still better than the four games each of those teams had in hand going into last night.

The BC-UVM and Northeastern-Maine games were both very close, though. I believe in both cases, the game was tied or the underdog had the lead for a good portion of the game.

Hard-fought games aside, hopefully we see similar results tonight.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Yeah, can't complain about the results from last night. And in all honesty, MC is going to finish above us anyway, so that doesn't affect us. UMass and UVM have a second bite of the cherry each, as they both have yet another shot to win their first, but again against the teams they lost to last night.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Beeper permitting,, I will be heading to Merrimack for a hockey fix this evening. It will be interesting to see the team for the first time (since we play them next week) and the "renovations" to Volpe/Lawler. Merrimack is probably the most interesting team in Hockey East given their size and record. They are not in the elite, but they are not a bottom feeder either.

I only caught a few minutes of the radio show last night. Blaise talked for a minute about the injuries; he said Mike Scheu was the closest to returning to lineup. No news about the others (Campbell, Cey, Budd and Caveney). Hopefully several of them will be back for the Merrimack weekend.
I really do wish they would put the radio show online, so those that are interested can listen if they missed it.

I'm busy with a night class every Tuesday night. Sucks for me.

I agree with "UML" and Monty... Making it a podcast could be better and useful.. I know between lifting, kickball, and volleyball I don't have a lot of time for a stray thought... Picking up the radio show whenever would be useful... But I know that'd put additional effort on the radio station... But if we could that and other things into podcast form that'd be useful... Maybe other clips and player interviews as well... Honestly, we should push the envolope as much as possible in terms of audio and visual media... but I've believed this for awhile.. YouTube, audio clips, anything... Promote the school and student athletes by any means and media save Facebook/Twitter overload... I mean, say Mr. arnold promotes his charity wing... That should be archived digitally for anybody to grab whenever.

Totally agree here. The athletics site has an "All-Access" page for ice hockey with an oddly-organized array of highlights, interviews, and River Hawk Reports beginning with the 2008-2009 season. There are even a couple of radio shows from the 2008-2009 season. This would be a perfect place to provide links to this year's shows and other media. On a side note, they should also put the current season's information first so you don't have to go and look through different seasons' information to find the current stuff.

Too bad the team didn't get the support from the bottom half of Hockey East last night like it did on Friday night.

Next weekend, Vermont and Amherst have the weekend off and Providence plays a h/h with Northeastern so there won't be much more help from other bottom teams. The h/h with Merrimack will be a tough one but hopefully after a weekend off, a healthier, rested team can get 2+ points (especially on the Friday game in Lowell because something happens to 'Mack when they're in Andover that makes them scary).

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

After watching last night's Merrimack game, I'm hoping for a split. Taking points on Friday is a must (given that will be the only regular season game at home w/Merrimack) and taking some at Merrimack is a bonus.

Some notes from last night game:

Merrimack players can skate and generate offensive chances. They actually have some talent that keeps opposing teams honest. If Lowell doesn't skate with them, it will be a long weekend. For example, BU tried to mail it in with 20 seconds to go in the second period. Stollery intercepts a horrid pass, sent it forward to generate a textbook 2-1 with Jessie Todd absolutely smoking Milan "like a bad cigar"

The special teams last night was perfect (0-6) PK, and embarrassed BU on the two converted PP's; they only had two PP's.

Merrimack does take too many penalties and still has problems closing out games they should have won. Indirectly, while their weren't scored upon, it did cost them a win last night with the defense being totally gassed and give two to BU in the third. BU's larceny of a point last night was just that, they had no business coming back from two on the road after the way they played the first two periods.

Arena:

Seats behind the away net (Merrimack shoots twice) for the first time in over ten years and were filled to capacity by students last night (officially, a Merrimack sellout). Not surprisingly, I did see Coach their last night passing through the mob scene.

Bob will have a new view in a modern press box. A lot more space on the visitors' side, I won't run the surprises. Although, with a sellout and only two stands open, it was close to 20-30 minutes to get refreshments between periods.

Section 12 and 13 are the visitor sections, it's in front of where we shoot twice and still $15. $20 seats are the chairbacks.

Don't bother showing up early to park in the Rogers Center lot. They had it blocked off with cones, a police cruiser, and a sign...Rogers Center parking only at 5:45.

Been a long time where Lowell is really an underdog to Merrimack next week offense, defense, and goaltending. Both games are winnable, but it going to be an excellent test to see where the boys are in their development.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

I think I read somewhere tickets for Saturdays game are $5

For North Andover and Andover residents, according to the Merrimack Athletics website. For anyone that is new to Lawler Arena, sit high up. The last row is great. You are still real close to the action and can stand.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Not to overstate the importance of this weekend, but with Lowell currently in 8th (where many had thought the team would be) and the two teams behind them both only one point back (and with 2 games in hand) ... getting points this weekend would be huge in keeping hopes alive to make the playoffs this season. I think eventually PC will come back to reality, but they're playing well so far this season. Lowell has 8 games left before the break, 4 in league and 4 outside, and also 4 home and 4 away. Here's hoping the weekend off gets some players healthy and we continue to see improvement as we did against UVM and UNH.

Hmmm, some might say it was BU that stole the point given a couple of hit posts, crossbar and an open net miss by Da Costa with about 10 tics left in the game;)

Looking forward to a renewal of what was once an awesome rivalry (looonnnnggg ago in the D2 days).

According to the Warrior Rink Rate site, Merrimack is offering $5.00 General Admission tickets for Saturday night. The offer is good for advance-purchases only through MerrimackAthletics.com by using the promo code “mackvalley”.

At the monent I'm not having any luck with that promo code on the Merrimack site.

I think you have to log in to a server that has an Andover/North Andover identifer. On the web page, the discount only applies to Andover/North Andover residents.

That would seem correct. I have season tickets, but just went to the MC site and punched in the promo code and got an error message suggesting the promo code wasn't valid. Either way, we hardcore college hockey fans are very lucky. We have very inexpensive ticket prices with relatively easy access. I mean if you want to go to any of the major tournaments besides the Frozen Four, with a little work or effort, you can get great seats for under $40. Sorry for taking the thread off subject.

That's a pretty good article that puts a positive spin on the program through the beginning of the season.

Transcripts of comments from the November 16th Hockey East Coaches' Media Teleconference have posted on the Hockey East website.

Nothing earth-shattering from Blaise, but a good preview of the upcoming Merrimack series and his thoughts on the new players, the schedule so far, and the Tsongas renovations.

Mark Dennehy's portion of the teleconference is much shorter but contains his view on the coming weekend against Lowell.

Blaise mentioned last night that Scheu and Caveney are back at practice. Campbell, Cey and Budd are still out. What's Campbell's i njury? I don't remember seeing him get hurt.

It should be an interesting weekend of hockey against Merrimack. The Hawks need to take some points. I know Lowell has had Merrimack's number over the past few years but I didn't realize they are 21-3-5 in the last 29 games against the Warriors.

From the HE site:
UMass-Lowell: The River Hawks (2-6-2, 2-6-0 Hockey East) had the weekend off to rest after playing five games in nine days…UMass Lowell gears up for a home-and-home series with Merrimack…The River Hawks lead the all-time series with Merrimack, 67-38-8…That record reflects the occasional dominance UMass Lowell has had in the series, including the program's longest win-streak against a Hockey East opponent, 10 games from Mar. 4, 1994 to Nov. 8, 1996…When hosting the Warriors, the River Hawks are 37-15-3 overall and 13-4-2 in the Tsongas Center…In recent history, UML is 21-3-5 in its last 29 games against Merrimack and undefeated in the last four home contests.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Editing since I was typing the same thing that Bob posted... and adding that Coach also said he was shocked at how good practice was on Monday after a couple of days off. Then yesterday's practice wasn't anywhere as good.
