Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Blaise needs to keep Carr in net for tomorrow. The kid has given up 3 goals in his last 7 periods against BU and UVM. Ride him and let him get into a flow.

Don't quote me on this but I heard from someone, might have been from Carr's father i'm forgetful, that he is not capable of handling back to back nights because of an oblique injury he had surgery on over the past year. Something with his legs cant take both nights of play. He needs rest. Hey i know you guys want Carr in net but I thought this was a rebuilding year. Play Boulanger. Let him get settled and find himself. Who knows, in a couple games he could be the hot goalie and Carr could be trash.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

It might be a bit early to ride 1 goal tender, especially a Freshman, they should wait untilFebruary to Ride 1 goalie. It is still a long season and win HEA this season is a long shot, so why risk running down 1 goalie. If memory serves me right BM used both Hutton and Hamilton equal their freshmen and it made goaltending strong in the future as they traded off being #1 for the first 3 years. The last Freshmen goalie they rode was Vetri and that ended up not being a long term solution. Just keep making improvements and lets hope for a second half surge.

You know how often 1 goaltender gets run down? Not often, and if then, you can give the guy the night off. There are NHL tenders that can play 60-70 games without serious wear issues. There are college teams who will run one guy out for the most part all season. There hasn't been any serious fatigue issues that appear with goalies. If Carr is that much better then ride him forever... on the other hand, if you see this as a development year you let your guys take their turns... but you know what... I see nothing wrong with playing a goalie 32 of 34 nights of a regular season if he's that much better and his body is up for it. As long as his backups remember how to play hockey, I don't really care.

A nice effort by the young Hawks tonight, they never quit. Playing their 5th game in 9 days and missing several key players they hung in there.

UNH really carried the play for much of the night but Carr played well and the defense did a nice job clearing pucks out of danger. Even with the large UNH shot advantage I didn't feel like Carr had to stand on his head tonight to keep it close. I thought the Hawks were going to tie it up in the end. Derek Arnold is going to see that open net in his sleep tonight.

How about that quick whistle late in the 3rd.

Another disappointing crowd tonight.

Again, listened to the broadcast, but from what it sounded like, Arnold just had to direct it into the open net and instead whistled it high. Hopefully those start falling for him because he's been getting a ton of chances.

Bob was not happy about the quick whistle and now I can see why. Didn't realize that it was that close.

Was nice to hear the forwards driving to the net. The goal came off of some extra effort in an unusual post-goalie confusion-forward put away the rebound kind of way. Hopefully more of those "dirty goals" that Blaise wants to focus on keep on coming.

Pendenza and Holmstrom up front and Ruhwedel in the back are developing very quickly.

If Carr had gotten a win or tie tonight, we might have seen him pick up the Hockey East rookie of the week award this week. But either way, 29 of 30 (.967) and 41 of 43 (.953) for the weekend is excellent and I agree with those saying that if he can stay healthy, it should be his job to lose at this point.

Great time in the season to have two weeks off. The team knows it can be competitive with some of the best in the country and can now take some time to recover, get healthy, and work on some of the little things before a h/h with Merrimack.

Wow, what a great picture by Matt.

Indeed a great shot! So close, yet so far from the line.

As far as the game, I'll say this. On the minus side, it was another game of missed opportunities. By far, the unfortunate highlight of the night was Arnold missing 24 sq. ft of nylon. The sad part was not even getting the shot on net from three feet out in front and having all of the time in the world. The poor kid probably had a restless night and to add insult to injury, it was the time change. He wasn't the only one that had chances last night but those are shots that need to be converted, regardless of experience or lack thereof.

On the plus side Doug Carr was the best River Hawk on the ice last night. He really kept the team in a game they had no business being in given that they were outshot by a over a margin of 17/10. He is much more confident that three short weeks ago and had much better positioning on cutting down attacking angles. To me, I thought he did have to stand on his head, especially with the shot disadvantage.

Despite the obvious offensive talent discrepancies and experience, the underclassmen picked up the slack against, well, a much more talented and experienced team. Without four key upperclassmen (Cey, Campbell, Budd, and Schieu), this team kept the #10 team in the country to two goals. A lot of it was Carr, but the defensive as a whole was at times came up with some very good defensive plays. I hope all of the upperclassmen (injured or not) take note of the underclassmen's performance last night.

They are done with this hellish stretch of five games in nine days and have a bye next week to regroup and hopefully get back at least two of the four missing upperclassmen, which I have no knowledge of when they may be back.

Last night while leaving someone made the comment to me in the concourse that they are sick of the UNH fan trash talk. There were a row of UNH fans sitting behind me for most of the evening and of course, rooting for these team and of course talking smack after the win. There is the old saying from William Marcy , "To the victor belong the spoils". When we start winning these close one-goal games and putting Lowell behinds in these seats (which are primarily occupied by Lowell alums) is when we won't have to put up with it visiting fans going home happy and Lowell alums wanting to puke.

Standings are starting to revert back to the late 90's/early 2000's with the big four in control and Providence (which I think is a faction of these relatively weak HE schedule). Going to be an important series with a Merrimack team that is my dark horse for home ice and have gotten out to a rather mediocre start to the season, save their home win over BC. They really haven't answered their road woes question but I'm expecting a split even thought it is still almost two weeks before the puck drops.

It's amazing to think after the horrendous start that Carr had at Maine, that he's now 7th in HE in GAA and 5th in save %. No question in my mind that he's won the starting spot.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

I only caught a few minutes of the radio show last night. Blaise talked for a minute about the injuries; he said Mike Scheu was the closest to returning to lineup. No news about the others (Campbell, Cey, Budd and Caveney). Hopefully several of them will be back for the Merrimack weekend.

I bet that even when he does know when the players are coming back (if he doesn't know already), he'll keep the information private until the players come back so it will add a wrinkle that oppnents won't be expecting. Although getting the players healthy is the #1 priority for those four, hopefully it happens sooner rather than later.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Merrimack is going to be a very key weekend in picking up 3 to 4 points. With this off weekend coming up then the weekend after MC being a non-conference weekend, we need to keep up with the pace of other times. If we stay with only 4 points over the next 3 weeks it will be hard playing catchup in hockey east.

Thanks for the compliments on the pic, that puck landed so flat on the ice after falling out of DiGirolamo it just died, if it lands on its edge it probably flips in

Agreed that we gotta get at least 3 from Mack, but playing down in Andover is always hard (they beat BC in Andover). If we can also take 2 or 3 from the following weekend (home vs UNH then away in Amherst, note the 1:30 start time) we will be in really good shape. The real key for this team is to start winning the games they play well enough to win, the game at BU, the Northeastern game. I see some real improvement coming to this team soon, they are starting to generate very good chances, just gotta finish, the freshman for the most part look excellent, and with only 4 HE games for the rest of 2010 and no christmas tourny, I expect to see a very good and healthy (knock on wood) team in 2011.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

I would be more impressed if they didn't give up those 4 goals this year... unreal those girls.

Re: 2010/2011 UML In-Season Thread

Save Merrimack's steal of a point at Agganis, one couldn't have asked for a better night in across the bottom half of Hockey East if you are a Lowell fan.
