2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

So apparently Nabokov hung up on Garth Snow:
New York Islanders general manager Garth Snow said goalie Evgeni Nabokov hung up on him shortly after the veteran goalie was claimed off waivers on Saturday.

Snow reached out to the 35-year-old Nabokov shortly after the Islanders claimed him from the Detroit Red Wings -- the team with which Nabokov signed a one-year contract on Thursday. Snow said when he identified himself on the phone, Nabokov immediately hung up.

Can't blame Nabakov for wanting to stay home. Playing for the Isles is like playing for the Washington Generals. Wang makes Joe McGrath of the Charlestown Chiefs look like Jerry Jones.

Here's the difference between the Senators and Maple Leafs.

Owner Eugene Melnyk broke his silence on his team’s season from hell on Saturday when he told the Ottawa Sun that, “The time has come to make some of the most difficult decisions that any owner can make.”

Melnyk said he has a plan “in motion” but refused to elaborate.

Somehow, I can't see the Ontario Teachers Pension Fund saying the same thing when all they care about is the bottom line.

As Steve Simmons wrote in Sunday's Toronto Sun:

Tough times for Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd. The Raptors are 13-31. The Leafs have won 19 of 46 games. The good news is, their sports bar, Real Sports, is all sold out for Super Bowl Sunday and on most hockey nights it's a two-hour wait if you want to try for a table without a reservation. The best thing about MLSEL, aside from Richard Peddie leaving: The Sliders at Real Sports

Both Girardi and Prust leave the game for the Rangers, ****. Girardi fought Ladd after a nasty hit from behind/boarding that went uncalled.
Like I said, it never ends. :(

OMG - please say it ain't so!

The tousle-headed kid who turned the hockey world on its ear is hitting 50.

Wayne Gretzky, Canada's male athlete of the 20th century, trips the half-century odometer on Jan. 26, a memory milestone that may pack as much impact for an aging generation of Canadian baby-boomers as for the retired hockey god himself.

A question occurred to me while watching the shootout in tonight's Rangers/Caps game: What happens if the goalie commits a penalty during the shootout? I don't mean something violent that would result in a major or a misconduct or anything, but, for example, what if the goalie skates up to the hash marks to try a poke check, gets deked, and trips the shooter? Do they award a goal?

Yes. Actually earlier in the season in a Rangers game, a goal should have been awarded to Anisimov after the goalie pretty much did that, but it happened so fast, it wasn't called.

Penalty shot rules apply. As such -
When an infraction worthy of a minor penalty is committed by the goalkeeper during the penalty shot that causes the shot to fail, no penalty is to be assessed but the Referee shall permit the shot to be taken over again. Should a goalkeeper commit a second such violation during the penalty shot and the shot fails, he shall be assessed a misconduct penalty and the Referee shall permit the penalty shot to be taken over again. A third such violation shall result in the goalkeeper being assessed a game misconduct penalty.

But would they have to switch goalies after the third one then? Would anything happen after the second one besides taking the shot again (since the goaltender doesn't serve minor penalties)? It didn't detail it at all in the shootout part.

If the net is empty, doesn't the same principle apply that if there's a penalty committed against the attacking player with no impediments to the goal, it's an auto goal?

Tim Gleason cold-cocks Nikolai Kulemin at the end of the 1st period in the Canes' 6-4 win over the Leafs

The situation jmh described isn't truly an empty net, though. The goalie was there and got beat. If he turned around and threw his stick at the goal to try and stop it, that'd be an automatic goal.

[inappropriate]
I'm confused; don't you have to have a brain to get a concussion?

Sad seeing such a great player like savard now having to think of retirement when he has plenty of skill left in him. Maybe he'll give it one more go

Anyway, so with the actual drafting of players for the all star game taking place this weekend, kinda embarrassing for the last guy picked, no?
