Gabby doing his best to make people forget that Dubinksy is out. Four goals so far.
He'd been struggling lately, getting decent chances but not finishing. Nice to see his fortunes improving. Looks like the Zuccarello-Stepan-Wolski line is continuing to work, too.

Wings are reportedly in serious negotiations with Nabokov, however he would have to clear re-entry waivers.

Playing the Leafs will do that.

Yeah, Gustavvson sure played like "The Monster" didn't he??

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

This will probably make me vomit.

It's far from a done deal, IMO. McKenzie thinks they have come to agreeable terms, but are figuring out whether or not they can write something into the contract that will discourage other teams from claiming him (there are at least two clubs who are reportedly "interested"), or if Nabby's agent and Ken Holland are just going to have to try and throw their weight around.

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

I don't think he'll make it out of waivers. Reports are that the Wings only want to offer league minimum, which prorates to about $250k for the rest of the season.

With all this chatter, Holland likely has some plan up his sleeve though.

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

Is he hoping someone else picks him up and makes one of their current goalies available for trade?

As is, a number of Western Conference teams would have to consider putting a bid in just to make Detroit keep playing a just back from injury Jimmy Howard and Joey McDonald.

Pretty sure we can't afford his ridiculous cap hit without trading multiple pieces. Plus he's been even less consistent than Howard lately, and might be lucky to be somebody's backup next fall.

MLive was reporting a multi-year deal with a no-trade clause exactly for this reason.

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

According to McKenzie, the contract includes a special clause:

"If claimed on waivers by another team, Nabokov cannot be traded or waived again without DET having first option to take him back."

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

McKenzie needs to read Article 13 of the CBA.

13:23 - In the event a professional or former professional Player plays in a league outside North America after the start of the NHL Regular Season, other than on Loan from his Club, he may thereafter play in the NHL during that Playing Season (including Playoffs) only if he has first either cleared or been obtained via Waivers. For the balance of the Playing Season, any such Player who has been obtained via Waivers may be Traded or Loaned only after again clearing Waivers or through Waiver claim

Edit: Thx to those who corrected me on the error of my waiver ways. Popular misconception even amongst some NHL management types. #IamadopeLOL- McKenzie.

Yeah, it seems there is a lot of confusion with the waiver rules.

I doubt he clears anyway.

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

So now the running theory is that Holland stuck a NMC onto the contract, and somehow, that means that Nabokov can invoke said clause to decline a claim by any team other than the Red Wings.

Given the cornhole that New Jersey got ripped for trying to sneak one by the NHL last summer, I can't see that working, but there you go.

I think he can just not report if another team claims him.

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

The Thrashers web coordinator (who admits to not being privy to insider information) said that he hasn't heard one way or the other if the Thrashers would put a claim in (since Mason will be out another month or so), but he felt that Nabs would be taken by a team lower than the Thrashers.

I got a hunch that every team thinks that someone's going to put a claim in, so no one claims him, and Nabs clears waivers.
