So, what I wonder about the All-Star Game draft is: Is Eric Staal going to pick Marc Staal? And, more interestingly, will he reach to pick him earlier than someone else might?

I read (NY Post? can't remember exactly where) that supposedly Marc doesn't want to play with his brother.

Heh, that's kinda funny, I could see that being the case because they certainly do both seem to up their game playing against each other. I guess if Marc wants to be on the other team then Eric won't pick him. *shrug*

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

I think Eric came back and said he was going to need to pick Marc so he didn't get picked last, so we'll see what happens.

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

If my memory serves there was some line in the article I read that Marc said that he doesn't like playing with Eric because he runs mouth too much on the ice. :)

Congrats to CC alumn Lee Sweatt as he scored his first career NHL goal in his first NHL game for Vancouver last night and it was the game winner!

Nice celebration too...........come to me, boys! I get the feeling he's planning on scoring a few more.

Looks like he'll get the chance:

The Vancouver Canucks will return from this week's NHL all-star break atop the Western Conference standings and minus what many consider their best all-round defenceman.

Alex Edler will undergo micro discectomy surgery on his back and be out of the lineup indefinitely, the team announced Thursday.

Looking at the All-Star rosters it makes me wonder what happened to all the superstars in this sport?

It seems like everyone is a pretty good player, but not a ton of star power anymore. Example, randomly selected 1990 and looked at the rosters.

Wales Superstars: Bourque, Chelios, Coffey, Francis, Housley, Lafontaine, Leetch, Lemieux, Neely, Roy, Sakic. Nearly the entire team is a name everyone knows.
Campbell Superstars: Gretzky, Hull, Iafrate, MacInnis, Messier, Robitaille, Yzerman. Fewer, but no less recognizable.

Now this years teams combined: Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Toews, Kane, Nash, Lidstrom. You could toss in a couple other guys (St. Louis, Stamkos, Staal maybe?). But its pretty thin.

Who will be the last pick of the game? Backes, Burns, Yandle, Stastny, Kessel? I'll go with Kessel. Whoever it is, I bet he overcompensates and plays well in the actual game.

Backes threatened to check whichever captain doesn't pick him if he goes last.

So now that we are at the break, who would be your surprise and disappointment so far? For surprise, I would go with Dallas. I think they are playing very well in a good division. I thought they would be competitive this year but not at the top of that division. Tampa Bay holding a slim lead over Washington is a bit of a surprise. I thought that they might be good enough to be a 7 or 8 seed for the playoffs so I think they are exceeding my expectations a bit. As for disappointment, New Jersey by far the most disappointing team at this point.

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

Devils are the most disappointing team in a landslide. Chicago, San Jose and Calgary are distant 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishers in that contest.

Most impressive? Dallas #1, Colorado #2 (young + injuries), Vancouver #3 (didn't think they'd be as good as they are)

Right where you thought they'd be? Detroit, Philly, NY Islanders, Edmonton

Why didn't you think Vancouver would be as good as they are?

As much as I complain about the Wild, they have actually exceeded my expectations so far this season. Havlat is re-emerging, Clutterbuck is bringing more than just relentless hitting, and Theodore has been great in the backup role. Didn't think any of those three would happen.

I like Vancouver, I follow them. Just didn't think they'd be 31-10-9 and on top of the west. I probably would have picked them to be 3rd or 4th at the break, behind Detroit, San Jose and potentially L.A. I thought that they were spending too much on their goalie and Bieksa was a defensive liability. I thought that Ryan Kessler was great and already overachieving, didn't think he'd continue to improve so much. I was wrong, but it's a happy wrong.
