Rick Rypien is going to get smacked by the league. Never touch a fan. EVER. Of course, there's no precedent for this one. Any other instances like this happened too long ago or involved fans going after players on the rink.

The brother of the kid called into KFAN. According to him his brother was clapping and said "Way to be a professional."

I saw the video last night. Unless the kid was dropping F-bombs and insulting his mother at the same time, there was no reason to respond at all, let alone grab the kid. This should be a lengthy suspension.

Even if the kid was dropping f-bombs, its not an excuse for an athlete to touch a fan. The only logical circumstance I can think of is if a fan enters their field of play and harm seems immanent. Im going to guess the wheel of justice lands around 10 games.

"There's boundaries that should never be crossed. We're in our area of work," Malhotra said. "We're all for the hooting and hollering and supporting your team and saying whatever is tasteful. But as soon as you cross that line and want to become physical with a player then we have to make sure we take care of ourselves. ... We have no idea of what their intentions are."

--what game was he watching? wasn't the game he was playing good enough to watch?

If he's dropping four letter bombs, I could see a S T F U from the player. But I agree, unless he's touched, there's no reason to put his hands on a fan.

It shouldn't be less than 10 games. Could be as high as 20 if the brass really want to "message send", but I doubt it goes that high given that he didn't punch/injure the guy (which he fortunately did not).

Rypien should've taken after the Bruins player who went into the stands at MSG and beat the Rangers fan with his own shoe.

That was Mike Milbury. He should have gone Tie Domi on the Wild fan!

But I thought the best way to send a message was not to suspend a player and then send it along to the rules committee?

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

So the guy who Rypien went after is 28? Wow, I thought he was younger than that.
Makes no difference either way, was just surprised.

Re: 2010-11 NHL Season part I: Blackhawks Down in Atlanta

I was thinking MINIMUM of 20. You don't touch a fan unprovoked. PERIOD. If this was a fan he'd be banned for a year (or forever in a good chuck of arenas).

Like I said on FB (or similar): I hope for 25, expect 10. It's Bettman.

Found that Columbus drew only 9800 and Atlanta drew 8800 to last night's games. And we screwed Hartford, Quebec and Winnipeg because....?

Didn't see this posted yet about the Rypien incident, and it's hilarious. Started my day off right.

They really should have had a picture of Grandpa Sports for the tenured columnist.

Also the Wild should buy this guy a ticket behind the Vancouver bench for tomorrow night's game. That'd be awesome.

Because Columbus and Atlanta have a plethora of corporate sponsorship available for the NHL to try and leech onto?

And for being so rabid about hockey, just 2,300 showed up in Hartford to see the <strike>Whale</strike> Wolf-Pack. Manitoba, for their AHL HOME OPENER on a FRIDAY night, only managed to squeeze 8,800 into the MTS Centre. Followed that up with just 7,000 on a SATURDAY night.

Sure there are people who probably aren't thrilled that the AHL is in either of those cities, but should there be a touch more support shown?

Also, for a team that routinely would slaughter some NHL teams for attendance on the same night, the Chicago Wolves had a pathetic 2,712 listed last night. That's what used to show up for the "OMG it's snowing too bad and both airports are shut down" weekday games just a couple years ago.

Which why when the Red Wings play at Columbus the game is a sell out and the crowd is 75% Red Wings fans who drove the 3 hours from Detroit for some cheap NHL tickets.

Well, the Blackhawks are at home and they have all sorts of long time fans supporting them. One or two might have even been NHL fans way back in 2008.
