2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

If I'm coaching third I plan to send him right up to the point I see him dancing around cluelessly off the base, at that point I hold him and take my chances with Span. As I said in the other thread you often see outfields brought in in similar situations and it works what, maybe 5% of the time? What us worrisome is I don't think Casilla had any idea where the fielders were located.

I still can't believe Marsh missed Inge getting brushed by the pitch during the top of the 12th.

Randy Marsh missed the entire game. Which is too bad since he was supposed to be the home plate ump.

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

Just a note for those that were talking about Homer Hankies...everyone who walked in the door tonight got one...I now have like 10 of them! Nothing beats the originals though :D

I have every Homer Hanky the Twins have issued. Those things are classics. I walked around campus with my Proud and Loud one on the outside of my backpack. My girlfriend at the time was like why are you doing that and I said you had to be a Twins fan to understand.

I'm trying to find out if my parents got tickets. I can't go to the game, but I was going to get them tickets. I'll call my buddy today too, see what he can do for them.

everyone is like Oh it only brushed his jersey, it didn't physically hit him. It doesn't matter. As part of baseball rules, if it touches the batter or the batters clothes, he is HBP, unless the ump determines it was in the strike zone or the batter made no attempt at avoiding the pitch.

It was a ball and Inge turned away...that was a blown call bigtime.

Well, that was make up for his insane strike zone then.

Sounds like the winds will be howling at the Stadium today. Depending upon which way they are blowing I wonder if Gardy would be tempted to start Gomez in center and DH Kubel? If they are swirling having Gomez out there might be worth a couple of outs. And given how completely overmatched our DH was yesterday we might at well....

Thumbs up to our small market brothers for getting into the post-season!!

He should have tucked his shirt in better. :)

He should have been paying closer attention last week, I wasn't sure of our man Delmon was hit by a pitch or sniper fire.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 10:34 AM CDT. All I can muster is: EPIC!

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

When Casilla scored we all basically lost it!
It would be a better story if he actually had scored.;)

The only way that was a bad call was if he could have held up once they realized the screw-up, but the original idea to send him was correct.
You have to send him. Even though he got a late tag, he only lost about 1/2 step, and he's fast enough to still make it. Detroit executed the play great and only got him by a hair.

The Baseball Tonight guys said sound is a big part of how an ump usually makes that call -- good luck hearing anything like a ball brushing a shirt at that point last night. Their opinion was that it was an almost impossible call for him to get right.

Agree. A full game of Kubel in the batting order and both Gomez and Span in the OF is worth more than any advantage Harris or Morales gives us over Gomez at the plate.

And if, its a big "if", Gomez gets on, I love having his speed on the bases.

Does anyone else just enjoy watching Gomez play? Yeah, he is rough and often downright awful at the plate, but it really seems like he has a lot of heart, has fun and truly loves to play the game. IMO, it is refreshing to see that.

Also agree. Plus, you know the Twins are going to lay some bunts down against Sabathia and make him get his fat *** off the mound and try and field the ball. He notoriously hates fielding so Gomez would be a smart choice not only defensively but also as a bunting threat(did I just say bunting threat???)

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

He said it interviews all the time when he was with Cleveland. The small-ball stuff (That we haven't relied on as much this year) drives him nuts.
Ah. I thought there was a press conference or something happening where he was going off on us again. :)

Re: 2009 MN Twins Part 4: I Was Told There Would Be No Math

From Souhan's column today:

"This game is going to live forever. People are going to talk about this game forever.''

The game threatened to last that long until, with one out in the bottom of the 12th, two players who had been benched a lot lately came through. Infielder Alexi Casilla drove home his best friend on the team, outfielder Carlos Gomez, with a single to right. That made a winner of reliever Bobby Keppel, who may have quit baseball if not for the opportunity to throw for Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson last winter. "Biggest win?'' Keppel asked, incredulous. "Let's see, how many days have I been in the bigs, 104? And this is my first win? And it comes in Game 163? I think so.''

Any guess to whom may have asked Keppel if that was his biggest win? I gotta think Souhan is taking a shot at Grandpa Sports here. :D
