2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

law said the guys he voted for (lincecum, vasquez, carpenter) all threw 30+ more innings than wainwright.

I still haven't looked into why Will Carroll voted the way he did. Not that I care, but if he's leaving a guy like Carpenter off that's rather important.

He also said he voted for Vasquez because he thought he faced tougher teams and he wouldn't vote for two players on the same team.

Didn't Vazquez pitch for the Braves? That means he had to face the Mets and Nationals a ton. I officially declare shenanigans.

Baseball Free Agency opened last night at midnight...Did anyone honestly know this without following a major news source?

I didn't realize it opened. I didnt think it opened till December.

Why can't baseball free agency work as quickly as hockey? All the big names would be gone after the first two days.:)

GRAVEDIG!!!!!

So the Braves signed Billy Wagner today. I'm pretty blah about that. Will he be good? No question. But he's a lot older than Soriano and Gonzo. Both of whom can get the job done.

At least the Braves should be able to get close to their draft pick back once those two sign elsewhere. Which is the only reason those two were offered arbitration.

There's a question with Wagner whether he'll make it to April off the DL. :p

I liked him, despite The Troubles in Queens, but obviously he didn't fit and it's nice to be rid of that salary hit. He will now no doubt save all 9 games at Turner against the Mets this year.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

I'm not looking forward to the 2010 Mets season.

Even with everyone back "healthy"...we have no pitching, no bullpen, no first baseman etc.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

The problem isn't letting Wagner go, the problem is trading him for non-prospect minor leaguers rather than keeping him until arbitration and collecting the draft pick compensation that will go to the Red Sox instead.

Absolutely. They thought saving two million dollars was more important than getting two high draft picks.

Then want us to pay bank to see the team play, but they don't show the same commitment to winning as they do to raise prices.

We have pitching and bullpen enough to rival most teams -- it's not the '73 A's but it's not the '79 Mets, either.

No first baseman -- no argument there. Add no corner OF and no C.

Apparently they are scaling back seat prices at almost every level for next season.

Which means they still be twice as much as they should be:D

What do you mean by most teams? We have a great ace and then after that I think it's safe to say the starting pitching is average at best to below average.

Pelfrey as great as he was two seasons ago is not a #2 starter. Ollie? oh god please don't get me started on him when we could have had Derek Lowe for a little bit more money. Maine is still up in the air since he has been hurt but a "tired arm" or whatever his issue was last season is not encouraging for a player in his mid 20's. We have no young pitching prospects that will ever amount to anything more than a #4 starter at best.

Bullpen...Umm...really? We have nothing beyond K-Rod and even he wasn't as great as billed last season. Putz was hurt...no clue how he will rebound. Feliciano is good but has been overworked how many seasons in a row now?

corner outfielder they had the chance to get Dunn last year and balked on it. He can play 1B too..oh what a concept that would be to have him this year now that Delgado is gone.

I still havent forgiven management, CitiField designers, etc whoever was involved in that mess for designing that field. The Mets have lost their identity and play in a park dedicated to a franchise that doesnt exist anymore. There is no personality and no home feeling like Shea was. As much of a dump as it was, it was still home and screamed New York Mets.

The Yankees are once again going to continue to dominate the "new fan market" for New York baseball with their WS ring. Not too long ago it was the cool thing to be a Met fan in New York and you were starting to see a lot more apparel. That window is gone now and we're back to being a second rate ball team living in the shadow in the Yankees. (I realize the Yankees will always be NY's team...not disputing that...but the Mets were making a serious run in gaining support and fans to atleast be mentioned in the same breath as the Yankees)

They also play in a park where it's impossible to hit a homerun to left field. 12 homeruns led the team last year...TWELVE!! David Murphy led the team in homeruns...

Oye...I can't believe I just had a rant about the Mets. Maybe it's because the Bills and Rangers suck just as much and I have no saving grace when it comes to my sports team except for Cuse Basketball right now.

As someone pointed out in the Red Sox thread, offering Wagner arbitration was risky for the Mets. Although unlikely, he may have accepted, then the Mets would be stuck with him again. As noted, I don't know how likely that would have been, but just something to keep in mind.

The Mets had nothing to worry about with Billy Wagner accepting arbitration. He wanted to be a closer, and nothing was going to have him accept with K-Rod in the way. If K-Rod had happened to been injured, the Mets simply would have told Wagner they were exercising JJ Putz's option.

There was no way in hell that Wagner would accept arbitration, the Mets made this move simply to save 2 million dollars.

Karl Ravech isn't bad, but the rest of the lot is hideous at best.
