2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

Matt Stairs is so slow that the Phillies used a pitcher to pinch run for him.

Wait, no, Matt Stairs is so slow that the Phillies used a white pitcher to pinch run for him.

Wait, no, Matt Stairs is so slow that the Phillies used a white pitcher who's been on base a grand total of ten times in his major league career to pinch run for him.

Matt Stairs just got to the dugout. ;)

Good to see a lot of kids in Philadelphia & LA are skipping school to see daytime playoff baseball. There is hope. :)

AP reports that we will all be able to adore Ken Griffey Jr. for another year with Seattle. There are few athletes I've enjoyed watching more.

For those of you interested:

MLB network tonight at 8 pm and 11 pm, Bob Costas interviews Ernie Harwell. This could very well be the last time we see him.

Cuza said Martinez was suffering from the flu in Game 6 of the World Series, in which the right-hander allowed four runs, all earned, in just four innings against the New York Yankees, who clinched the Series title in that game.

"I think he lost 13 pounds," Cuza said, according to FoxSports.com. "When I saw him in Miami last week, he was still battling it. He said, 'I don't know what hit me.' I don't know how he took the mound that night. I didn't realize how sick he was."

 :p

Is he ill? I hadn't heard about that.

They gave him 6 months to live back in July, plus or minus a month or two.

I knew something was wrong when I first read the reports in the Detroit Free Press about him leaving the hospital after surgery for an obstructed bile duct, and that he was canceling appearances two months in advance. Something just didn't smell right. This was about <strike>a month and a half</strike> three weeks before the news became public.

Me on 8/16

The news becomes public on 9/4

Anything to save face.

No Petey, it's not because you blew your wad in Game 2 and letting the Yankees get another look at you and your weak stuff got you rocked. Of course not.

Me too. One of the great pleasures of being a Mariners' fan.

Tim Lincecum wins NL Cy Young.

He is ridiculous. Two full seasons, and he's won the award in both of them.

Yeah, he's good.

No gripes about the Cy Young Awards here, now let's just get the MVPs to Mauer and Pujols and we can call it a pretty good year for the voters.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

How often does the person who gets the most first-place votes not win the award? Or even finish second?

Anyway, I thought Carpenter would win.

from the mlb.com article -

Wainwright became only the second pitcher to garner the most first-place votes and not win the award. In 1998, Atlanta's Tom Glavine collected 11 first-place votes to 13 for San Diego's Trevor Hoffman but amassed the most points, 98-88, and took home the trophy.
