Re: 2009-2010 NHL Season Thread 2: Its all going up in flames!
Niemi is now tied for the league lead with 4 shutouts, in only 9 starts. Now, he's a perfectly capable netminder, and has flashed some athleticism and instinct that could make you think he's got a bright future (and his numbers are dynamite all-around so far). But the reason Chicago has a league-high 7 shutouts this season and an NHL-low 1.97 GAA has much less to do with Huet/Niemi than the fact that the Blackhawks are limiting opponents to 24 shots a game, and only a small percentage of those are generally "quality" opportunities.
People's assumptions/suspicions could definitely be proven right this spring, but as tonight's result supported, this isn't about the goaltender.Agreed
Huet's numbers may be flashy now, but we'll see what happens come April.

Huet's save percentage at this moment (.913) is actually lower than his career numbers (.916 in the regular season, .917 in the postseason). He's Top-4 in the league in GAA because the team in front of him makes his life easier than any goaltender in the league through the first three months of the season. His numbers this year have been stellar, but when you go from absolute suck to this good... you have to wonder if it will last.
