2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Now UNH just has to take care of their own business next week, and we're all big Vermont fans.

Just so I understand what to watch for . . .

To finish 1st in Hockey East, and host the playoffs at the Whitt, UNH Needs:

1.) to "win out" - get 4 points against BC. Gotta take care of your own business first.

2.) Providence, the only team that holds the tiebreak against UNH, needs to take no more than 3 of 4 against VT.

I do not know how scoring works; if a game goes to OT, and then a shootout, would the Friars still get 2 points for the win? Going to do a lot of scoreboard watching this weekend.

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Yesterday I commented on how lucky we are to have Kelly Paton out there.. well I shouldn't discount everyone else if some took it that way, but after the game Sunday, add Kelly Cahill to the top of any list...she was as tenasious as ever, even after taking a few body checks that of course were not called...she was very impressive in her determination and guts to keep getting up and always dig hard for the puck....we have many players that do this and hopefully they will reap their own rewards for playing so hard...really inspiring and fun to watch....
On the UNH men's thread, talk has been about using all 4 lines. Yesterday Erin did begin to utilize most of the bench, and the results were nothing short of fantastic! Hope Coach Mac picks up that habit....

Correct. UNH needs UVM to take at least one pt from PC.

But as you guessed, if it goes to a shootout and PC wins, the Friars will still get 2 pts. So UVM needs to win outright, or win a shootout in order for PC to drop pts.

All agreed, and one step further - the D corps really worked hard this weekend, and despite Birch's obvious absence, were solid in the zone, and quick getting out of it.

Not to take away from the upperclass blueliners, but I don't think Kailey Chappel has gotten enough praise for taking a regular shift, as well as special team duty since day 1. Sure - she's made freshman mistakes, but I think the fact that her name seldon comes up in conversation speaks to the way she's played. She's getting the job done.

Also - kudos to Kristine Horn for manning the blueline, although it's quite apparent that noone has pulled the forward out of her yet, as she rushes upon contact. She's so far had some good end to end rushes, and has the wheels to get back, but the jury's out against a quicker team. As Hux said, watching her at D is "an adventure." Who knows - another Birchard in the making?

Hoping to see Bryanna Farris at her native position as well~

Stonewalled: UNH women blank Vermont to complete sweep

By JOHN DOYLE

Monday, February 15, 2010

DURHAM — In the Hockey East standings, earning a shutout doesn't earn a team any extra points. That didn't matter to Lindsey Minton on Sunday. She wanted the shutout.

Minton stopped all 24 shots she faced and helped lift the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team to a 4-0 win over Vermont on Sunday at the Whittemore Center. It was the third straight win for the Wildcats, which included a weekend sweep of the Catamounts after a 4-2 win on Saturday.

"I have a lot of one-goal games, so it feels a lot better to finally get the goose egg," Minton said. "It feels really good."

It was Minton's third shutout of her career and second of the season, the first coming in a 4-0 win over Colgate on Oct. 9. Minton, who improved to 10-3-1 on the season, has backstopped the Wildcats for all three games of their current winning streak, which started after a 5-2 home loss against Boston University on Feb. 6.

Video Highlights and post game with Skudder, Minton

"Our team has definitely got a little pep in our step now," Minton said. "We're tied for first right now, so those are two huge wins for our team. We really needed those four points. We really want to get first (place) in the league this year."

The win put the Wildcats (18-6-5, 12-5-2 in Hockey East) into a three-way tie at the top of the conference standings with Connecticut and Providence, both of whom like the Wildcats have 26 points. Vermont fell to 10-20-1 and 5-13-1 in the league, good for seventh place.

Brittany Skudder recorded three points for UNH, including her fifth goal of the season. Her goal at 18:47 of the second period was the first of two UNH scored in the final minutes of the middle frame, helping stake Minton to a 3-0 lead after two.

The Wildcats were playing without junior defenseman Courtney Birchard, who missed her second straight game due to injury. UNH head coach Brian McCloskey was absent for both games of the weekend series as he attends to his ailing father.

"Both teams were tired, I think that was obvious," said UNH associate head coach Erin Hamlin said. "We knew it was going to come down to popping a couple of pucks in."

Skudder's first point of the afternoon was an assist on Julie Allen's eventual game-winner that put UNH on top 1-0 at 10:17 of the opening frame. Skudder skated along the end line and fed the puck to Allen near the crease. Allen fired it across the net and over the left shoulder of Vermont goalie Kristen Olychuck. It was 1-0 at the end of the first period.

"That's my favorite play, to go behind the net and pass it," Skudder said. "It was a good start to the game because we usually don't score first. To score first was good."

The Wildcats had trouble carrying momentum into the second period, as they were called for the first three penalties of the frame. But two goals within 42 seconds of each other, all in the final 90 seconds of the period, gave Minton plenty of insurance by making it 3-0 after two periods. Skudder scored with a backhanded shot that made it 2-0 at 18:47, and Micaela Long scored her 11th goal of the season — on a power play — from the right faceoff circle at 19:29 to give the Wildcats a 3-0 edge after two.

"(Molly Morrison) dropped the puck to me," Skudder said, "and I brought it to my backhand. The (UVM defender) was on me. Her stick was between my legs, and I just put it through. I didn't even know until they started screaming that I went through her five-hole."

The Catamounts held a 21-18 shot advantage through two periods, but were unable to get to Minton. She made a number of quality saves in the final minute of the second period and got to relax a little in the third, as UVM managed just three shots. Courtney Sheary put the exclamation point on the weekend with her first goal of the season, a power-play tally assisted by Kristine Horn and Skudder, making it 4-zip at 9:09.

"I thought we played pretty scrappy," UVM coach Tim Bothwell said. "We moved the puck well, did a lot of good things. They're a tough team to beat. They have a lot of people who can score and Lindsey played very well in net for them. She made the stops when she had to."

UNH wraps up the regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series against Boston College. The Wildcats open the series hosting the Eagles at the Whittemore Center on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

UNH, 4-0

Vermont (10-20-1, 5-13-1) 0 0 0 — 0

UNH (18-6-5, 12-5-2) — 1 2 1

It did seem odd to me that Horn was moved back, instead of just moving Farris back to her natural D spot.

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

I totally agree with your Chappell comment DC...I was telling her parents how nice it was to see her standing up the opposition at the blueline and not leaking back into the goalie....plus she is learning to move the puck more quickly and be sure of getting it out of the zone.....Hux is right to call it an adbenture with Horn playing D...she has stepped up to be a team player and do what is needed but she really has to realize when you're the last man in the zone, you don't curl and drag on everyone trying to steal the puck on you!!
And as for the D playing sharper, Sheary played her best game, as did Jingles last game....heads up and steady play helped solidify the D so the forwards to be more into the offense.....definitely a solid weekend of play....as for Farris, she seems so timid and scared out there now....unsure what is expected of her, and so unsteady to make a mistake...really a shame. I don't know the best reourse for her

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Frosh Assesment pre-playoff: Kristina Lavoie... huge huge year for a kid making a cultural adjustment. will only get better esp. between her own blue line and goal. Kristine Horn.... stepped right in and has always contributed...showed versatility with time at D Bryanna Farris......hard to fully analyze....good skater, seems tentative, likely to improve if she gets the idea she's good enough Kailey Chappell.....has improved game to game and is very tough in her own zone. will only get better Paige Goloubef.....haven't seen her much but she's a physical player with a pretty good stick Katie Brock.....seems to be able to do everything except shoot....visibly one of the fastest skaters in Hockey East . wins a ton of one on one battles in her own end

Oh, Katie Brock can shoot. Right now her role is to move the puck out of the zone, and from high to low in the offensive zone. Give her time and she will start potting a few...plus she already has more than Goguen had in her career! ;)

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Sure Katie Brock can shoot, I just think she should more often. I also think she has the ability to skate around the the first 1 or 2 forecheckers. If she ever realizes this it'll really open up the ice. Comparisons are odious but this woman might be the best in class as far as skill and she's got jets. Check it out on the roster page......National Team experience, Gold medalist, US-under18 Women's World Championship. Bottom line is that this a loaded Freshman class.....let's see what happens

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Bottom line right now is that K.Lavoie, C. Horn, and K. Brock are very good. I see a National Championship on the horizon

The team is loaded with talent. What I see as an impediment is thier sporadic lack of intensity and consistency, which had not been a problem in the past. They had a rough spell coming out of the gate second semester, and the general "feeling" you got watching them drop some of those games was not that they weren't the best team that day, but that they didn't bring their best game.

In the game against UConn, and the series this weekend against Vermont, they came out intent on doing the little things right, winning the races, and moving the puck quickly. If they can play that game for the remainder of the season, yes, I agree, there will be 7 - 8 games left for them.

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Few are better than Long or Paton.......Birchard is appently out for the season. Most likely not the Wildcat's year,,,,,,,,but it could be. Anything can happen in the playoffs, and the Cats have at least 7 women with the ability to break a game open.

Freak, I just heard about one of those signs on DHD. You guys are pretty creative ;)

If you don't mind, you could let "diving libero" know that the sign wasn't:

Snow...Outdoor Hockey...And The Eskimo Didn't Play? Come on?

It was:

Snow...Outdoor Hockey...And The Eskimo Didn't Play? Really?

Just can't see my way clear to spending $30 for an all-access pass just to post that. :p

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Again, I will note the importance of the Skills Competition in ties.

Today, PC is the regular season champion. UNH has a shot at 2nd place, but the odds are that they'll be playing BC next week. Even before the game yesterday, UNH was counting on help from other teams to have a shot at #1, apart from having to win out themselves.

Obviously the parity in the league has increased, but things would look much brighter in the standings for UNH if HEA were playing under 07-08 rules.

If there were no arbitrary points being awarded for the shootouts, the standings would be:
Code:
PC 27 pts
UNH 26 pts
UC 26 pts
BU 23 pts
NU 22 pts
BC 18 pts
UVM 11 pts
UMO 09 pts

And with one game remaining, UNH would be controlling their own destiny, as they have the H2H tiebreaker over UConn.

These arbitrary awarded points DO matter.

I've said before that it doesn't seem like the team gets fired up for the shootouts, but they're going to have find a way to win a few of these when the situation arises, because as much as I hate it, the shootout isn't going anywhere.

The shootout has artificially closed the gap in the standings even more than the increased talent around the league has done on it's own. This makes every game even more important, and a gives less margin for error.
