2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

I wonder why UNH has chosen to play less than the maximum 34 regular season games in each of the last two seasons. Last year, they had 32 plus an exhibition, which counts against the maximum. This year, they played 31 plus an exhibition. I know other coaches do so from time to time, usually because they have trouble fitting more into the schedule. But three below the maximum is quite a chunk, especially given HEA's playoff format where a top-two team will play no more than two league tourney games, and this year it was only one for the 'Cats. You wind up playing an Ivy-League quantity of games; in fact this year, Cornell played one more.

It puts your players at a bit of a disadvantage for individual awards, in that they have less chances to showcase themselves. It also means that each loss is a touch more damaging in the rankings. Maybe it gives the staff more time for development in practice with less emphasis on game preparation, but I just found it a little different than most teams' approach.

A state university in a down economy. Hmmmmmmm, I'd say budget concerns.

Well, to show how much I really haven't been paying attention this season . . . where's Jenn Wakefield. I'm suspecting she was in a similar situation as UMD's Laroque . . . didn't make team Canada and red-shirted all season??

And by all accounts will be joining the Boston University Terriers in the fall of 2010.

Thanks . . . it's coming back to me now. And, my boss knows I'm always looking for extra time off in March . . . ! Hopefully we'll have a chance to meet up down in Minneapolis.

IIRC, Coach Mac has said that they wanted to schedule a couple more non-conference games, but they couldn't find an opponent they were willing to play, to fit the gaps in the schedule.

WAY TO SHINE YOU PATTY YOU!!! I'm sure the oher Ladies are class acts but no one can compare to our Captain!! No one should ever question size again in the sport of hockey! Way to be KP!

Hopefully, this isn't a problem that persists in the sport in general.

I can see this getting worse as top teams try to avoid 4-Nations week plus the impact of international camps/tournies around the new year. Doesn't leave much flexibility in teams' schedules.

Especially this year when Räty is the "tall" one in the final 3 at 5' 4".

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Blais is also 5' 4", so she's clearly too tall for the award despite outperforming Paton in every category.

Exactly.

Except, of course, that it isn't true.

Blais also played 6 more games than Paton, only 2 which are attributable to the differing playoff formats between HEA and the WCHA.

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

I think the cats need to get back to basics this weekend. They need to play their game and not get caught up in trying the home run pass or being stuck in their defensive zone for too long. I think that coach needs to move horn back to f and either cahill or cuthbert back to d because they are more sound defensively. my other point is that paton should be moved off the powerplay point. she's too good of a playmaker to have her park on the point and wait for a pass. I think an allen or lavoie might make a good point person on a PP (if coach really wants a F on D) because of their size and the power they can put behind their shot.

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

I think she comes in third.

Saw the goalie for Minnesota play....she's amazing.

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

I disagree. It's tough for a freshman to win this type of award (and the hobey too). It's between Bendus and Paton IMO.

I think it comes down to which of those players makes her teammates better around her... I believe that's Paton. All three are deserving and I wouldn't be surprised to see it go to any one of them.

Good luck. In last weekend's WCHA championship game, Minnesota didn't get a shot off for the first 12 minutes of the game. Defense will be the key for UNH this weekend.

not necessarily. UNH held UMD without a shot in 08 from halfway through the first to halfway through the third, outshot them 45-12 and still lost 3-2
