2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Again, I will note the importance of the Skills Competition in ties.

Today, PC is the regular season champion. UNH has a shot at 2nd place, but the odds are that they'll be playing BC next week. Even before the game yesterday, UNH was counting on help from other teams to have a shot at #1, apart from having to win out themselves.

Obviously the parity in the league has increased, but things would look much brighter in the standings for UNH if HEA were playing under 07-08 rules.

If there were no arbitrary points being awarded for the shootouts, the standings would be:
Code:
PC 27 pts
UNH 26 pts
UC 26 pts
BU 23 pts
NU 22 pts
BC 18 pts
UVM 11 pts
UMO 09 pts

And with one game remaining, UNH would be controlling their own destiny, as they have the H2H tiebreaker over UConn.

These arbitrary awarded points DO matter.

I've said before that it doesn't seem like the team gets fired up for the shootouts, but they're going to have find a way to win a few of these when the situation arises, because as much as I hate it, the shootout isn't going anywhere.

The shootout has artificially closed the gap in the standings even more than the increased talent around the league has done on it's own. This makes every game even more important, and a gives less margin for error.

I am personally looking forward to next year when they implement the hardest shot competition to determine the extra point after a 5 minute overtime

Having said that... take one of 3 games from PC, and UNH is the hockey east regular season champion...

They should rotate it between shootout, fastest shot, fastest skater with the cones, and that one with the targets in the four corners. Shootout puts too much emphasis on goalies. They should allow the emphasis to rotate between 1-on-1/goaltending skills and other skills. Or why don't they just play mini 1-on-1, tape them, and show them at intermissions of Bruins games throughout the season?

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Freak speaks the truth.....UNH cannot complain about the final standings, shootout or not, for if you cannot beat a team even once, you have to give them there do. Even though I'd love to roast me a Friar! But UNH has also played thru some emotional times with a very young squad. With Birchie out, we lost about 30 minutes of defensive play a game,at least, without mentioning her importance on the PP...then we lose Cahill for an important game, when she is arguably their best forechecker and emotional leader( no mistake here, KP IS their Captain)....teams are made up of many individuals, whom each play their part, so when some are out of the lineup it's a tough road to hoe and be up for every game.....but look at how they responded yesterday....that proves their mettle for now....and with 5 games to go, we'll see which team comes to play....but you have to love'em either way, eh?

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

hold your Horses there Zoofer...UNH can win it all.......will they? sure if they all get bitten by a WILDCAT........save the rabies test

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Believe me Daddio I couldn't want anything more in the world, but if you saw a few of the games this year that I did, (the first PU game, the home BU), you would agree that winning it all would be a huge stretch.....I enjoy your analysis of the freshman class, and I realize what our upper classman bring to the rink, but we have a lot of gears that will need to click in sync to bring home the hardware.....is it impossible, no because that's why they play the games

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Nice to see some discussion here! I've seen every game this year live with the exception of St. Lawrence, Clarkson, and UVM in VT, and I watched those on line.

I've also watched 15 or 20(maybe more:eek: ) other NCAA games this year, and I have seen UNH play well enough to beat any team I've watched. Unfortunately, they have struggled to play at that level game after game.

Losing Birchard has certainly been a hardship, but they still have the talent and speed to beat the opposition they could potentially face. For them to go deep into the post season, they will have to get A level effort from the Freshmen on up fpr 60 minutes at a time from here on out.

Would it help to have a Wildcat nipping at their heels? I certainly think so;)

I have a feeling a medal bedecked Wildcat alum will appear come playoffs, and she is sure to put some jump into the girls. ;)

PATON NAMED HOCKEY EAST PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY

WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Kelly Paton (Woodstock, Ontario), a senior forward and captain of the fifth-ranked University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team, was named Player of the Month for February by Hockey East on Tuesday. Paton has received the award a league-high three times this season; she was previously feted in October and November.

Paton recorded five goals and nine assists for 14 points in seven February games to average 1.29 assists per game and 2.00 points per game. Those statistics included two power-play goals and a game-winning goal in the regular-season finale at Boston College that lifted UNH into a tie for second place and gave the Wildcats the second seed in the league tournament. In that final game of the regular season, she matched her career highs in both assists (three) and points (four). Paton also had a +4 rating and a .200 shooting percentage. She recorded a point in every February game with three multiple-point efforts.

Paton leads the team in points (51), goals (19) and plus/minus (+19) and is tied for the lead in game-winning goals with four. She is also second in assists (32) and tied for second in power-play goals (six). Furthermore, Paton ranks second in shots (118) and fourth in shooting percentage (.182). With those numbers, Paton ranks fifth in the nation in points per game, fourth in assists per game and 17th in goals per game; she is also among the national leaders in game-winning goals (15th) and power-play goals (16th).

In 139 career games, she has compiled 62 goals and 100 assists for 162 points to rank fifth in assists, 11th in points and 18th in goals on UNH's all-time leaderboards.

UNH (19-7-5) is the second seed of the 8th Annual Women's Hockey East Championship tournament and will face off against third-seeded Boston University (15-8-12) in a March 6 semifinal game at Providence College's Schneider Arena. Game time is 3 p.m. The winner advances to the March 7 (12:30 p.m.) title game to battle for the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Questions for a casual fan:

1.) Any place to watch the game, not online?
2.) Please tell me it'll at least be on the radio.
3.) Is there fan voting for Patty Kaz, like there is for Hobey Baker?

Not trying to be wise, but it's not a bad ride to Providence, and tix are only $5.00, so unless time is that tight on Saturday, c'mon down! I'm sure the team appreciates every 'Cat fan.

As far as I know, the only viewing other than live for Saturday is online. Sunday the Championship Game will be tape delayed on NESN at 6pm. There might be an audio stream, but you'd have to check PC's site. (Or I can later)

If there is a video stream from PC's site, be wary. I signed up to watch a Providence game last year, only to have it canceled. I was still charged for it, and it took two months to get the charge corrected. Then four months after the season was over, I was charged several times for various events. This is not PC doing this, but their video vendor.

Re: 2009-2010 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

The NESN website has a 6 pm time for the championship game on tape delay. The Bruins-Penguins are on at 3 pm live from Pittsburgh.

Ahh, yes, B2 Networks. I had the same problem for a couple of seasons. Fortunately, I don't have to sign up to watch games via the internet any more. It was my assumption that I was signing up to pay for and watch a single game. It was claimed by B2 Networks that, no, I had signed up to watch a season's games for a university team in which I had no interest other than that one game. Not only that, they'll keep on billing for additional seasons if you let them get away with it. It pays to check your credit card statement regularly. ('You' and 'your' not meaning you but anyone unlucky enough to be similarly trapped in future.)
