2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Here's the arbitration scorecard, btw

Weeks - no arb, signed for 2.75
Gomez - no arb, signed for 1.1
Gerut - no arb, signed for 2.0
Hart filed 4.8 - team 4.15
Coffey filed 2.45 - team 1.7
Bush filed 4.45 - team 4.125
Villanueva filed 1.075 - team 800k
Corey Hart should feel very bad about asking for that much money. He deserves a pay cut, IMO.

Re: important bobblehead-related news

Don't get too excited, there's still not another starting pitcher. :)

There also will be a fan vote for the Greatest Moment in Brewers history. It better be Cooper's hit. :)

Well I thought this would be a good time to make my first post... I mean seeing that I am all settled in my new digs in Vallhalla (which btw are the Pressbox at County Stadium and not the ones in Anaheim).

According to Brewers.com Dougie Davis has inked a 1yr deal worth 5.25 Mill with a club option for 2011.

As for analysis, I really think this is a good deal. Davis is a much better option that Mark Mulder at this point given Mulder's injury troubles. Also, Davis pitched pretty well for Milwaukee the first time around and in my opinon is much more polished now. He may have gone 9-14 last year but the D Backs were pretty horrible.

All in all while the Brewers staff may not have Cliff Lee or Doc Halladay, the addition of Davis and Randy Wolf give it one great starter (Gallardo) three solid ones (Bush, Wolf, Davis) and one raw prospect with a big upside (Parra).

All in All good Job Doug Melvin.....

I'm going to try and avoid all DD-pitched games. Is there anyone slower in MLB? Side note, I know someone who refers to DD as 'Sharpie' on account of the black mark, er beard, he has on his chin. I'm assuming it's still there. :)

Full count five inning Vargas was just as slow. Thankfully we don't notice it in the bullpen anymore.

I thought jsonline said the deal guaranteed $5.25 mil but that also counted the $1 mil buyout for next season if they don't want to pay him $6+ mil for 2011. I believe his base guarantee is $4.25 mil for this year with another $2 mil in incentives he'll easily reach if he pitches like he has the past few seasons. He won't carry them to the postseason CC style, but overall this is a good signing. The guarantee for 2010 is less than what they paid Looper last season and is about what David Bush will end up making this season. Davis should easily be expected to give them reasonable numbers over 30+ starts and 200 innings. I like the potential of the 3 lefty look in the rotation. Throw in Yo and if Mulder can get done and give them something it could be a pretty decent rotation. Dominant? No, but since I think the bullpen looks pretty solid I'd say it's more than good enough to get to the post-season if the lineup comes thru like you'd expect.

Its 4.25 mil for 2010 and a 1 mil buyout of the 2011 year.
There is also 1 mil possible per year in incentives...not 2 mil the first year...

Morning Brewer's Fans,

As I slug down my morning jolt of Maxwell House and Asprin I couldn't help but ask this esteemed group if they might think that the Brewer's shopping for the year is done. I mean I can't help but thinking that something may be not quite right with Mulder and thats why they went Davis. But, of course, after working next to Rex The Wonder Dog out there in the Big A my brains could be a bit scrambled... Del Crandall was so much better on the Brain Pan....

That being said I agree with Power of Yellow and Black. This is a solid rotatation and if, and that is a big if, they got Mark Mulder and if, again a big if, he pitched like his days in Oakland, you might as well give the Brew Crew a playoff spot.

I smell an alias alert!!!! I never said this was going to be a solid rotation...hell, I haven't said anything in this thread for some time! So this was an interesting name to throw out there! Alias alert!! Alias alert! :p

I do think that this COULD be an ok rotation. There should be plenty of offense still, and the bullpen is solid. I still would like to get someone to kick Suppan out of the rotation, but wish in one hand, poop in the other and see which one fills up quicker. As long as Gomez can play a decent CF, and the rest of the D does not take a step backward, the Brewers SHOULD be at least in contention for the post season.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

dude, you know it's "Markas" right? :p :)

I'll withhold judgement on Doug Davis signing for now. I'll like him when he wins 20. :D

I think they're done, unless they deal Hart (for what, I don't know). They said they'd like to get 2 starters, and they did.

I never really liked the show Alias.... I am more of a Real Housewives sort of fan....

That being said, whoever I quoted this morning, Solid was my word.
They now have three guys with the potential to win between 10-12 wins a year and one guy who could win 15-20 with any run support. That seems to be solid to me....

Just a note here folks, I was handed a mseeage saying that my earlier quote about the Brewer rotation was attributible to MW4Bucky sorry for the confusion.

Conversely, I am going to go to DD games only. More minutes per dollar at the park. I can eat peants between pitches and not miss a thing. :) It will be really cool for DD to go 6, Vargas 2 and T Hoff 1.

Melvin said they were done shopping a month ago, a smoke screen perhaps, so you never know what he will do next. I'd still sign Mulder if he can go.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Coffey signed for 2,025,002, avoiding arbitration

headline reads: "Coffey signs, feels downright perky" :)

Brewers are waiting until next month to offer anything to Mulder, since he hasn't actually pitched off a mound yet.

Even better. If he pitches like he has the several seasons I think $4.25 mil is reasonable. If he pitches out of his mind the $5.25 mil they'll end up paying him this year is an awesome bargain.

Yes Rory (may you rest in peace) I did say it could be a solid rotation. I don't think spectacular, but solid. No true #1 guy. If they could swap out Bush or Suppan for a #1 it would be terrific, but it will do as is. I'll be interested to see if they go with salary and make Suppan the 5th starter since they have to keep him for one more year (unless they give him away and pay 90% of his salary in a trade) or with Bush who isn't great but is better. It wouldn't surprise me to hear they are quietly shopping Bush to see what his value is, especially if they are confident they'll get Mulder and he could possibly give them anything at some point.

Well if he pitches out of his mind and we decline the option its $6.25 million but yea ;)

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

So of all teams to sign Sheets, I did not think it would be Oakland....and they paid him almost $8 million! I did not know Oakland threw that kind of money around for injured players...they didn't even give their own stars that much money to stay!

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

I read it was $10 mil plus incentives... which is even crazier... glad he didn't go to the Cubs or another NL team, though.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

I would have loved to give Sheets another chance, but Oakland is out of their mind giving him $10mil plus incentives. I guess it isn't too bad since it's only one year. Good for Ben, but I don't think I would have guaranteed more than maybe $4mil with a chance to double it with incentives. Going to the AL is good for Ben as well with some of his strange injury problems.

Two of the Top 50

Two of the Top 50

Morning Brewers Fans!

Your old pal Rory here coming to you live from the ether.....

Just took note that the Crew had two prospects make the top 50 list on MLB network last night.

Alcides Escobar came in at number 12 and for all you hockey fans out there, Canadian Brett Lawrie came in at 26...

alright... Time to go see if I can haunt Rickey Bones....

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Brewers sign Jim Edmonds to a minor league deal and invite him to spring training - he'll compete with Jody Gerut for the extra outfield spot.
