Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....
I think many of us were looking for a direct benefit of trading Hardy for pitching, but I have a feeling we'll end up seeing the indirect benefit. Gomez is in the $500,000 range and they could probably grab a young guy or veteran journeyman SS for $1mil or less. Hardy was probably going to make $4 mil in arbitration and Cam was going to cost probably $8mil for the season if they brought him back. Dependent on the replacement infielder, they could save upwards of $10 mil on this deal to go after a Lackey or Washburn.
I just think the reality was they didn't feel like throwing together a huge package for a guy like Halliday. They'd then face the possibility of giving out a mega contract by next offseason to make that trade worth it and then work out another huge contract for Prince the following offseason.
At this point, I see them first going after a free agent pitcher. If that doesn't work, then a trade for a pitcher involving Gamel as a centerpiece is the next option. As long as the trade doesn't involve Parra or Bush, I'm not sure you'll see any other major moves in the rotation besides one guy to be up near the top with Gallardo. Maybe a low dollar flier on a guy like Mulder might be the thing. They need to decide what to do at the catcher position, then the bullpen will be the main focus. I see Melvin taking a no stone unturned approach here, although stones that yield Jorge Julio types should be put back where they are found immediately.
