2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Obviously not apples to apples, but...

What's the over/under on idiots wearing Hardy Twins jerseys at Miller Park next year?

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

So.....I saw the Mets declined the option on J.J. Putz. What do you think the chances of him signing to be our 8th inning guy? I know his option was for 9-point-something million, but could he be got for a a multi year, incentive laden 3.5-4 million salary?

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

There was no way Melvin was going to get a P for Hardy that was worth a crap but.....he trades for a young work in progess speedy CF, when last year he traded away a young work in progess speedy CF. If he'd have kept Gwynn, he could have traded Hardy for another position filler. A bit of a head scratching move.

I think many of us were looking for a direct benefit of trading Hardy for pitching, but I have a feeling we'll end up seeing the indirect benefit. Gomez is in the $500,000 range and they could probably grab a young guy or veteran journeyman SS for $1mil or less. Hardy was probably going to make $4 mil in arbitration and Cam was going to cost probably $8mil for the season if they brought him back. Dependent on the replacement infielder, they could save upwards of $10 mil on this deal to go after a Lackey or Washburn.

I just think the reality was they didn't feel like throwing together a huge package for a guy like Halliday. They'd then face the possibility of giving out a mega contract by next offseason to make that trade worth it and then work out another huge contract for Prince the following offseason.

At this point, I see them first going after a free agent pitcher. If that doesn't work, then a trade for a pitcher involving Gamel as a centerpiece is the next option. As long as the trade doesn't involve Parra or Bush, I'm not sure you'll see any other major moves in the rotation besides one guy to be up near the top with Gallardo. Maybe a low dollar flier on a guy like Mulder might be the thing. They need to decide what to do at the catcher position, then the bullpen will be the main focus. I see Melvin taking a no stone unturned approach here, although stones that yield Jorge Julio types should be put back where they are found immediately.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

I'm working on my curve ball. Once I get that down, my fastball will be faster that his, therefore making me a more effective pitcher. Except for the accuracy thing......

Keep your chin up! Did Jorge Julio let lack of accuracy get in his way? Did Grant Balfour?? Ben Hendrickson??? No! :p

If we go through this entire offseason, and all the Brewers have to show for it is Carlos Gomez, Doug Davis and Mark Mulder, I am going to be ****ed off.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

I'd love to see Washburn because I think he could come reasonbly as a native Wisconsinite and I think he still has plenty left in the tank. However, Melvin's love affair with Doug Davis scares me. I'm hoping they get Capuano back as a lefty out of the pen but I think they view him as a starter if he ever comes back. Maybe they could sign Mulder and Sheets as well and pray one of those three could actually stay healthy enough to pan out.:) I do think they'll end up doing something with some upside, but if they plan on giving us something the caliber of this season I'll pray the rotation is Gallardo, Parra, Davis, Capuano, and Suppan. They'd at least give us something to be proud of because I think they'd have the MLB record for walks in a season set by about Sept. 1.

At catcher I'd love to see Lucroy and Rivera. Kendall was a good soldier, but he just didn't offer enough offensively to make keeping him around worth it.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Looper is gone - http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/69985072.html

I'd like to see Washburn too (or Wolf - but I think Washburn would be cheaper). I don't think they have the resources to get Lackey, especially if the Yankees have any interest.

and with Looper gone, I think we can be fairly certain the Brewers feel good about getting SOMEONE that will be somewhat dependable (and hopefully not Doug Davis). They're not going to let Looper go if they can only replace him with Mark Mulder (are they?)

I would think they have to fairly confident that they can land one or two of the following:
John Lackey
Randy Wolf
Rich Harden
Jon Garland
Jason Marquis
Joel Pineiro
Jarrod Washburn

and personally I like the idea of signing Mulder in conjunction with one of the above...

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Shirtless, I think you are onto something with Marquis on that list. Just a hunch. I'd leave Harden alone. I love his stuff, but they might as well go back to Ben Sheets if they want a guy who needs to be limited to 5 innings an outing to avoid the DL. They might as well not even bother with Lackey. When the Red Sox and Yankees get involved that's just an entirely different economic strata. I'm going to predict they sign 2 of the 3 between Washburn, Marquis, and Mulder as a low risk $ contract, although that goes down to one of those guys if they trade with Atlanta for a starter.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

I like Mulder plus someone too, as long as it isn't Harden. I really like him, but didn't we have him when his name was Ben Sheets? Give Capuano a shot too. Capuano plus Mulder plus someone else that's pitched in the last year or two. :)

from jsonline blog - Washburn interested in Brewers (and Twins)? - also mentions Capuano

btw, there was also an article on the Brewers site saying they are not interested in Eric Gagne (who said he'd like to pitch again) - just in case anyone was losing sleep at night. :)

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

You know what is starting to bother me? People bashing Kendall. I keep seeing these comments left on the JSonline Brewers stories and on some brewers.com stories. They complain about his stick. You know what? If you are relying on the catcher for offensive production, then you are hurting as a team. Kendall called a great game, and pitchers loved throwing to him. It's not his fault the pitchers he was dealing with threw no harder than a stiff breeze or couldn't hit their spots. If you want to complain about anything realistically, complain about his lack of arm strength. He didn't throw out runners very well this past year, but again, how much of that was on him? When you have soft tossing pitchers with slow deliveries, even a howitzer cannon would have a tough time throwing someone out. The catcher position is SUPPOSED to be about defense and calling a game. Any offense you get from the position is a bonus, not an expectation. End rant.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Interesting thoughts on Kendall poy&b. Looking back I was probably in the silent middle regarding commenting on Kendall either way outside of sayng I didn't expect him to be re-signed this offseason. It's pretty much agreed he didn't give them much offensively so that part of the discussion can remain short. As far as defense I really don't know what to make of him. I've always got the sense he had a good feel for the game. In 2008 I thought he really worked well with the staff. His performance for 2009 is hard to guage because in this results-based game the results from the pitching staff were largely very poor. I guess we just have to try and figure out if we feel like he got the most out of a lousy staff by managing the game. That's about the most we could ask from the guy for last season.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Lowe isn't bad, but I'm not sure how much I'd give up for a guy with his salary and age. Vazquez would be a much better get if they are talking to the Braves. I'd rather seem them pay Washburn a little less than Lowe over that 3 years where they'd have to give up nothing.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Randy Wolf was not offered Arbitration so the Brewers could sign him without forfieting any draft picks...let the fun begin

I think he's a real possibility, although it will make him more attractive to others as well. I like the intrigue here. There are a lot of names out there. I think Mulder on a low risk deal makes sense. Washburn wants to come here, but there is no way Boras will let him give a home town discount. Melvin seems to have an affinity for Doug Davis. I could see a guy like Marques coming in to fill the role they hoped Looper would.
