2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Question, is Riske suppose to be available for 2010 or is he more dead money on our roster?
I don't think Riskie is an option for next year from everything I've heard. Suppan, Hall, and Riskie would make more money in 2010 than the entire Expos roster if they were still in Montreal.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Roster for next year is pretty much set, says Haudricourt - http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/79562007.html

Infielders (6):
1B Prince Fielder
2B Rickie Weeks
SS Alcides Escobar
3B Casey McGehee
INF Craig Counsell
Sixth spot: Perhaps Adam Heether, a versatile player in the system added to the 40-man roster this season. If Mat Gamel plays so well in spring training that he wins the third base job, then McGehee would drop into a backup role.

Outfielders (5):
LF Ryan Braun
CF Carlos Gomez
RF Corey Hart
OF Jody Gerut
Fifth spot: To be determined. The Brewers signed minor-leaguer Trent Oeltjen and invited him to camp, so he's a candidate. It's doubtful any of the organization's outfield prospects will be ready for the majors at season's start.

Catchers (2):
Gregg Zaun
George Kottaras or Jonathan Lucroy. The Brewers probably will want Lucroy to play some in Triple-A first but they like him a lot. Kottaras was a backup in Boston last year.

Starting pitchers (5):
LHP Randy Wolf
RHP Yovani Gallardo
LHP Manny Parra
RHP Dave Bush
RHP Jeff Suppan
If Suppan pitches so poorly in camp that he is deemed unsuitable to start, LHP Chris Narveson will have a chance to crack the rotation.

Relief pitchers (7):
RHP Trevor Hoffman
RHP LaTroy Hawkins
RHP Todd Coffey
LHP Mitch Stetter
RHP Claudio Vargas
RHP Carlos Villanueva
Seventh spot: RHP David Riske, if fully recovered from "Tommy John" surgery. If not, right-handers John Axford and Chris Smith will be in the mix as well as lefty Chuck Lofgren, a Rule 5 pick who must be kept all season or put through waivers and offered back to Cleveland.

I don't have a great feeling about it. The pitching rotation is exactly the same as last year, minus Looper plus Wolf. They've downgraded at a few positions to save cash. Bullpen looks better, I guess, but the bullpen wasn't that horrible last year until the starters completely imploded and they had to cover 6 innings in most games. ;)

One more starter that isn't Doug Davis would make me feel a little better. :)

One thing to remember is that we should have Mulder, Halama and Capuano in AAA coming back and ready to step in for anyone that slips up...it would be nice to get one more starter somewhere and Doug Davis for cheap would be an improvement over soup can...

I guess that's true - when Parra can't throw strikes (or whatever meltdown is bound to happen), they will have somebody hopefully better than McClung or Narveson to fill in (not that Narveson was terrible - but it'd be nice to have a fill-in with actual big league experience). Those are some big question marks, though. I also read KC (and maybe Baltimore?) was interested in Mulder, but I'd wager the Brewers have the upper hand in that one. :)

What would be really nice is for Jeff Suppan to finally have a year worthy of his contact. Maybe we should all ask Santa for help.

Suppan just needs to have a year worthy of Looper's contract :p

Ken Rosenthal thinks the Brewers will still sign either Washburn, Davis or Garland. Also, Ben Sheets to Cubs? Brewers' spin on it <a href="http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/80639247.html"> from Haudricourt</a> and actual <a href="http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/010410-Rosenthal-plenty-still-available-on-free-agent-market">Rosenthal post</a>.

I do not want Ben Sheets to go to the Cubs. You just know that's going to bite the Brewers in the ***.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Someone mentioned in the jsonline brewers blog comments that Gammons thought the Brewers might get Johnny Damon?? Here's the link, and more than one person said it - http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/80821237.html

did anyone else read or hear this? why would they do that? it just doesn't make any sense to me, even with trading an outfielder. I don't like it one bit.

i actually did here Gammons mention it on the Dan Patrick show but I didn't get it at all...where would he play?

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Damon? No thanks. They should have made a play at Cameron if they were interested in getting an old OF with his best days behind him. At least Cameron can still throw a little. They need to get one more starter signed and work on Mulder's incentive-laden deal. Damon is just a guy at this stage in his career. Guys like him can be acquired at any point. If they have to patch anything up late I'd rather it be an OF spot instead of the rotation.

Maybe he misspoke and meant the Braves?

I'd rather have Doug Davis than Johnny Damon.

I agree they need to get Mulder signed, and then get one more starter before I'll be happy.

I can't wait to see the reaction in Boston to Cameron and Hall untucking after a win...

i think it would also cost you draft picks. we could use some good ones, so please sign him soon

Damon was not offered arbitration so no...the Yankees will get nothing if he signs elsewhere.

I hope they do it.

I also hope that the Brewers keep doing it (for the whole "midwestern-er hard working, blue collar" effect). But if not, I completely respect that it's all Cameron's doing.

I think Jen perfectly described what the reaction will be:

article also mentions Red Sox are interested in Mike Cameron. His absence leaves an important question - will the Brewers still untuck? Will the Red Sox untuck now, and everyone will think it's cool and ESPN will talk about it like it's never been done before? ;)
We all know how these things work.

You could probably add the bulk majority of the Boston media and fans as reacting that way as well, although it will be a little more understandable when they pretend like it never happened before.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Brewers are talking to Mulder on Thursday night, and <a href="http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/81326102.html">Peterson says he thinks Mulder is healthy</a>.

more <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-12-cubs-sheets-jan12,0,7869164.story">Sheets to the Cubs</a> rumors - says he wants 10-12 a year for 2 years. which is maybe why no one has signed him yet. ;)

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

I'd like 10 million per for 2 years as well and my arm has never been cut on, although I'm not sure having to pull on a Cubs' uniform would be worth it.

They need to get that incentive-laden deal with Mulder done already. Then they can focus on one last starter.

important bobblehead-related news

important bobblehead-related news

Don't get too excited, there's still not another starting pitcher. :)

Brewers release details about the <a href="http://milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20100120&content_id=7942222&vkey=pr_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil">40th anniversary celebration</a> with four Retro Weekends - one for each decade - including special bobbleheads, player appearances and retro uniforms

Special bobbleheads will include:
May 16 - Hank Aaron's 755th home run (70s)
June 27 - Cecil Cooper's ALCS winning hit (80s)
July 25 - Robin Yount's 3000th hit (90s)
Aug 29 - CC Sabathia's final out in the last game vs the Cubs (2000s)

I assume there's still going to be "regular" bobblehead days, which they have not announced yet.

There also will be a fan vote for the Greatest Moment in Brewers history. It better be Cooper's hit. :)

Here's the arbitration scorecard, btw

Gomez - no arb, signed for 1.1
Gerut - no arb, signed for 2.0
Hart filed 4.8 - team 4.15
Coffey filed 2.45 - team 1.7
Bush filed 4.45 - team 4.125
Villanueva filed 1.075 - team 800k

jsonline blog said expect it to cost the brewers $17-18 million for that list...looks about right. If the players all win Arbitration, its $18.625 mil and if the brewers win it would be $16.625 mil. Its much more likely to be right in the middle.
