2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Brewers in contention for Wolf, DiFelice out all next season: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/78734767.html.

The article also mentions Melvin's interest in Doug Davis.

also, in case anyone missed it, next year's starting catcher is Gregg Zaun

I don't have a great feeling about this Randy Wolf situation. The rumor was they thought they had him at $25 mil over 3 years. Now the rumor has this number up to $31 mil over 3 years and he still hasn't accepted. I get the feeling he'd rather not come to Milwaukee so he's shopping the deal hoping for $30 mil over 3 years from someone else. How badly do they need to overpay on this guy?

I saw on the MLB Hot Stove blog that Wolf at 30 mil for three years was a done deal, until his agent flew to the Winter Meetings and decided to shop that price around to other teams.

I understand that an agent is trying to make himself money while he makes his client money... but wouldn't it be easier to get a couple of your clients working instead of just hoping for a big payday from one of 'em?

Overpaying for another starting pitcher makes me a little sick after Suppan and Looper. But I think that may be the only way to get one that hasn't spent the last 2 years injured, or isn't named Doug Davis.

Have I mentioned I really do not want Melvin to get Doug Davis? Just checking.

Tom Haudricourt at JSonline is reporting that the brewers offer to Randy Wolf was 3 years at $27 mil...that doesn't sound like a bad deal for what we are getting if he can stay healthy for 3 years

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

It sounds like the sticking point with Wolf for most teams isn't the annual salary but the number of years. It sounds like several teams were he can get $9 or $10 mil per season, but at this point the Brewers were the only team willing to guarantee the 3rd year.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

It's probably overpaying a little and guaranteeing a year more than they'd like, but their only other alternative to overpaying to upgrade would be an encore of 2009. I think he is a good add without having to worry about value since it isn't my money.

I think it's the best they were going to do. Melvin did say he wanted 2 starting pitchers, though (I assume Capuano doesn't count). Wonder what Washburn is going to get. Can they afford Washburn AND Wolf? I have a feeling this means Doug Davis is on his way.

Apparently the Brewers went shopping today because they have also agreed to sign LaTroy Hawkins for 2 years $7.5 mil.

As for Doug Davis, I kind of think it will just end up being Mulder unless they plan on doing Mulder more like Halama?

You think? I know he loves Doug Davis for some unknown reason, but I'm wondering if he's just sitting back to see if the market dries up and he can get someone decent for cheap. If that ends up being Doug Davis, then so be it.

Melvin really hinted the 2nd guy may be a trade. I do think they'll get one more guy plus Mulder. Mulder would be a decent bonus on an incentive-laden deal, but counting on him would be fools gold at this point.

I did like hearing they are talking to Vargas. I hated him as a starting pitcher because he nibbled his way to a full count with practically every hitter and he worked slower than Herbert on Family Guy walks, but he seems much more aggressive and focused working short stints as a reliever. Hoffman, Vargas, Hawkins, Coffey, and Villanueva is a pretty solid pen nucleus if they can find at least one more lefty to mix in with Stetter.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Melvin has been quoted saying that Mulder does not count as one of the "two starters" we'd like to add this offseason. So look for the Brewers to continue to look for a bargain with someone like Doug Davis, Justin Duchscherer, Jason Marquis, Jarrod Washburn...but who knows?

Maybe this is that LHP you were talking about...

Brewers also acquired a LHP for the bullpen in the rule 5 draft...will he stick? no idea...

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Brewers make it official...Randy Wolf is a brewer and Craig Counsell is staying a brewer.
Details:
Wolf:
$9.25 million in 2010, $9.5 million in 2011, $9.5 million in 2012. Club option for $10 million in 2013 with $1.5 million buyout. An additional $250,000 a year in incentive bonuses -- $125,000 for 190 innings adn $125,000 for 200 innings. Limited no-trade clause and additional payment of $250,000 if traded.

Counsell:
$2.1 million in 2010. An additional $500,000 in performance bonuses -- $50,000 each for 50, 7, 90 and 110 games played. $100,000 each for 125 games, and 75 and 100 starts.

Re: 2009-2010 Milwaukee Brewers off-season: Got pitching? Cause we don't....

Melvin says there's probably not going to be another big signing - http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/79263882.html

does that mean a trade? or just no more pitchers? and what the hell is taking Mulder so long?

article also mentions Red Sox are interested in Mike Cameron. His absence leaves an important question - will the Brewers still untuck? Will the Red Sox untuck now, and everyone will think it's cool and ESPN will talk about it like it's never been done before? ;) And what new way will the Brewers find to anger the Cardinals? :D

...or Jeff Suppan $12.75 million.

Maybe Petersen can get him to throw a tad better. Ok, maybe more than a tad better. Petersen is the wildcard in this whole situation.

12.75. I feel sick. :( :p Suppan is due for a REALLY big year, right???? They should've known there was going to be trouble, because he always pitched well against Milwaukee.. apparently we were keeping him afloat. :p

Hawkins passed his physical.

Question, is Riske suppose to be available for 2010 or is he more dead money on our roster?
