122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

No, no, no. Not hate. Scorn. Slight regard.

I save my hate for cities of more consequence. Like Tacoma.
Now thems fighting words sir. You may only lightheartedly joke about the smell of Tacoma or I’m getting 253 on yo ***!

The Tacoma Aroma.

Albany, OR is far worse, though, courtesy of their paper mill.

Mario
Bobby
Gordie
Mess
Gretzky

And Mario had the cancer AND major issues with back spasms, as in, many times he couldn't bend over to tie his own skates. I can't even imagine the stats he would have put up had he been healthy....

As far as the whiskey bottle/Vikings, the younger folks I can understand not knowing that.

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

I think we all agree that 4 of the top 5 NHL players are Gretzky, Mario, Orr, and Gordie. That's a Mount Rushmore of Hockey right there.

Re: 122 Franchises Ranked Bottom to Top:

22. Pittsburgh Penguins

Why? How one player can impact the team on and off the ice

The Good. 5 Stanley Cups (1991, 1992, 2009, 2016, 2017), 6 Conference Championships (2008)

The Bad. Terrible in the 1980’s, including intentionally tanking in 1984 to draft Mario Lemieux and early 2000’s when the team has financial difficulties.

The Ugly. For most of their history, the Penguins have been on the verge of bankruptcy. Even as early as 1975, the Penguins creditors padlocked demanding back payments until the team was sold the next season. The drafting of Mario Lemieux helped save the struggling franchise in 1984. After Lemieux retired the first time the Penguins remained heavily in debt with large contracts. The Penguins filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1998.
At this point, Lemieux stepped in with an unusual proposal to buy the team out of bankruptcy. The Penguins owed Lemieux $32.5 million in deferred salary, making him the team's largest individual creditor. He proposed to recover this money by converting it into equity—enough to give him controlling interest over the team. He also vowed to keep the team in Pittsburgh. The League and the court agreed, and Lemieux, with help from supermarket tycoon Ronald Burkle, assumed control on September 3, 1999, thus saving the franchise for the second time.
The Penguins still struggled in the 2000’s, playing in an out of date arena, Lemieux pleaded with the City of Pittsburgh to help with a new arena. In 2007, right around the time the Penguins next phenom Sidney Crosby got drafted, plans to build a new arena and keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh were announced.

Where they play. PPG Paints Arena, originally called Consol Energy Center when built in 2010, the arena replaced the antiquated Pittsburgh Civic Arena (The Igloo).

Owner: Mario Lemeiux and Ronald Burkle, you have probably heard of the former but not the latter.

Coach: Mike Sullivan, after a 12-year career, Sullivan became the sixth head coach to take over a team mid-season to win a Stanley Cup.

Top Current Players: Sidney Crosby, Evengi Malkin, and Phil Kessel

Hall of Famers: Paul Coffey, Ron Francis, Mario Lemieux, Joe Mullen, Larry Murphy, and Mark Recchi.

21. Miami Dolphins

Why? From 1970-1995, a model of coaching stability, from 1995-, a model of a coaching revolving door.

The Good. 2 Super Bowls, including the NFL’s only perfect season in 1972. 5 AFC Championships, (1971-1973, 1982, 1984)

The Bad. Almost became first 1st 0-16 team in 2007, an OT win over Baltimore prevented that. Overall very little success since going 14-2 in 1984.

The Ugly.
Head Coach 1970-1995: Don Shula, 288 wins with Miami,
Head Coach since 1995: Jimmy Johnson 1996-1999
Dave Wannstedt 2000-2004, Jim Bates finished the ’04 season
Nick Saban 2005-2006, left for Alabama
Cam Cameron 2007, 1-15 record
Tony Sparano 2008-2011, Tood Bowles finished the ‘11 season
Joe Philbin 2012-2015, Dan Campbell finished the ’15 season
Adam Gase 2016- current

Dan Marino’s final game was a 62-7 loss in the playoffs to Jacksonville.
Blew a 30-7, fourth quarter lead to the Jets.
Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin couldn’t play nice on the Offensive Line.

Where they play. Hard Rock Stadium, built in 1987 replaced the famous Orange Bowl. Originally named Joe Robbie Stadium named after the Dolphins original owner. The naming rights have changed in 1995 and many times as the Dolphins changed Head Coaches.

Owner: Stephen Ross bought the team from Wayne Huizenga in 2008, Ross has brought in celebrities such as Gloria Estefan, Mark Anthony, and Serena & Venus Williams as minority partners.

Coach: Adam Gase, finished his second season with the Dolphins, led Miami to its second playoff appearance since 2001.

Top Current Players: Jay Cutler, Jarvis Landry, and Cameron Wake

Hall of Famers: Don Shula, Paul Warfield, Larry Csonka, Jim Langer, Bob Griese, Larry Little, Dwight Stephenson, Nick Buoniconti, Dan Marino, and Jason Taylor

20. Detroit Red Wings

Why? The Winged Wheels showed great championship ability in the 1950’s along with the 1990’s and 2000’s

The Good. 11 Stanley Cups is the most for any U.S. based NHL Team. (1936, 1937, 1943, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2008). 6 Conference Championships, 6 Presidents’ Trophy Titles. Won 62 games in 1996.

The Bad. While the other ‘Original Six’ teams play vastly improved with the new expansion teams coming into the league in 1967, the Red Wings regressed leading to terrible play over the next 20 years. For a brief period in the 1990’s had the longest Stanley Cup drought.

The Ugly. “Darkness with Harkness”. Ned Harkness was a successful college hockey coach at Rensselaer and Cornell. Harkness was hired in 1970 after the Red Wings made the playoffs that year. Sid Abel who was the head coach moved up to the General Manager spot. On January 8, 1971 the Red Wings had only won 12 games out of 38. The players petitioned to have Harkness fired. Harkness was a disciplinarian that might have worked on college players but not for pro players. Owner Bruce Norris, fired Abel and named Harkness GM instead. Other NHL GM’s took advantage by bad trades made my Harkness and sent the Red Wings freefalling at the end of the season the Red Wings finished worse than the two expansion teams (Buffalo and Vancouver). While drafting Marcel Dionne with their first pick, Dionne’s career skyrocketed after being traded to Los Angeles. Harkness was dumped in 1973, from 1970-1983, the Red Wings only made the playoffs once in an era where almost everyone made the playoffs.

Where they play. Little Caesar’s Arena, the new arena in downtown Detroit that nobody is going to. The Red Wings moved from the Joe Louis Arena, which opened in 1979 after owner Bruce Norris planned to flee to the suburbs after two murders occurred near the Detroit Olympia where the Wings had played since 1927.

Owner: Illitch Holdings, Marian and Christopher Illitch took control of the team after their father Mike died last year. Illitch bought the team from the Norris family in 1982.

Coach: Jeff Blashill, was a goalie for Ferris State in the mid 1990’s then became an assistant coach at Miami University. Became Coach of the Year with Western Michigan in 2011. Became Head Coach of the Red Wings in 2015 after Mike Babcock announced he was leaving to take the same position in Toronto.

Top Current Players: Henrik Zetterberg, Dylan Larkin and Jimmy Howard

Hall of Famers: Sid Abel, Chris Chelios, Alex Delvecchio, Sergei Federov, Bill Gadsby, Ebbie Goodfellow, George Hay, Gordie Howe, Syd Howe, Red Kelly, Igor Larianov, Herbie Lewis, Nicklas Lidstrom, Ted Lindsay, Harry Lumley, Reg Noble, Marcel Pronovost, Bill Quackenbush, Terry Sawchuk, Brendan Shanahan, Jack Stewart, Norm Ullman, and Steve Yzerman.

If you have a time machine I will Bill & Ted with you to get him to stay at Cornell for another 10 years and, well let's be conservative, only 5 more national championships.

Just make sure Ralph doesn't get hold of it.
