12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Yeah, but as a hypothetical, could you imagine any of your examples leaving a conference where there biggest traditional rival is located for one that contains a secondary rival? Arkansas leaving the SWC for the SEC might be the only similar situation I can think of.

A: Northern Michigan leaving WCHA for CCHA. I'll take Jumping Conference Ship for $800 Alex.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

That is, for what it's worth, the same divisional set up the SEC has - 5 games against your division, 2 rotating against the other division, and 1 protected rival from the other division.

I know. You could even sub ISU in there.

Pros:
Natural rivalry with Iowa
Closer than Mizzou
PERFECT fit for athletics (in terms of competitiveness)

Cons:
Not as good academically
A bit smaller

The best part about Mizzou is that they bring a lot of athletic talent as well as a very high academic standard.

What I like about the model in the link I posted is that it preserves virtually ALL of the rivalries in the Big Ten. It's **** near perfect (with the exception of Notre Dame).

Con for ISU - no new media markets at all. Their teams suck.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Announcement can't be that big as the B10 Network isn't showing it, they would rather show an Iowa Quartet. :o :(

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

The SEC has a lot of "dead wood."

What if the cream of the SEC joined up with the best of the Big XII?

East
Florida
Tennessee
Georgia
Kentucky
Alabama
Ole Miss
Auburn

West
LSU
Arkansas
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Texas
Kansas
Texas A & M

If there were a live hockey game on B10 Network right now they would shut it off and go live to the announcement.

What about the University of Toronto? They fit almost as well as Mizzou. If not better.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

The conference just issued a statement, no news conference (because you don't have to answer questions that way!):

The Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) discussed the future of the Big Ten Conference at its winter meetings on Dec. 6 in Park Ridge, Illinois. The following statement is issued by the Big Ten office on behalf of the COP/C.

Penn State joined the Big Ten Conference in June of 1990 and its addition has been an unqualified success. In 1993, 1998 and 2003 the COP/C, in coordination with the commissioner's office, reviewed the issue of conference structure and expansion. The COP/C believes that the timing is right for the conference to once again conduct a thorough evaluation of options for conference structure and expansion. As a result, the commissioner was asked to provide recommendations for consideration by the COP/C over the next 12 to 18 months.

The COP/C understands that speculation about the conference is ongoing. The COP/C has asked the conference office to obtain, to the extent possible, information necessary to construct preliminary options and recommendations without engaging in formal discussions with leadership of other institutions. If and when such discussions become necessary the COP/C has instructed Commissioner James E. Delany to inform the Chair of the COP/C, Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon, and then to notify the commissioner of the affected conference(s). Only after these notices have occurred will the Big Ten engage in formal expansion discussions with other institutions. This process will allow the Big Ten to evaluate options, while respecting peer conferences and their member institutions. No action by the COP/C is expected in the near term. No interim statements will be made by the Big Ten or the COP/C until after the COP/C receives the commissioner's recommendations and the COP/C determines next steps, if any, in this area.

What would happen? You'd see some teams that you used to remember as being good coming in DFL in their conference and missing bowl games.

Great idea.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

We also have to think about the trickle down effect. If missouri goes who takes their place in the big 12. Or if rutgers, cincy, pitt goes who replaces them in the big east. This will be very interesting indeed. Notre Dame won't go because they like playing all their rivals in football and being in a conf would hinder that.

If a Big East team were to move to the Big Ten I don't think they would add anyone. With it primarily being a basketball conference (and having 16 teams already) I don't see the need to add another school if one should leave.

Big Ten asks Big XII for permission to talk to Nebraska or Missouri

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

If a Big East school makes the move, that will be just the excuse the BCS needs to boot them from a BCS A.Q., and further concentrate the wealth.

If a Big XII school were to move, they would HAVE to find a replacement in order to keep their football championship game. The good news is there are a LOT of options available for them; Houston, TCU, SMU, Rice, CSU... any of those schools would jump at the opportunity. Another private school in the conference wouldn't hurt either.

Mizzou and Rutgers would be my two leading candidates, in that order.

Pitt fits better than Rutgers IMHO.
