12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

This may have been discussed earlier but I was under the impression the Big Ten went far beyond athletics and there is a very close academic association/relationship between the schools as well? I can't remember where I read this.....and in fact I seem to remember The University Of Chicago was still a member of the Big Ten in an academic sense. Or, maybe I'm having another bad flashback. :)

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Alright valid on the money carrot for Mizzou.

After reading a bit on the internet, I'd put the derby at a tie:

Syracuse and Mizzou - If the Big 10 is looking at money, Syracuse does have a D1 name and is the big dog in upstate NY and has a big following in NYC. I'd say the compliment with Penn State spreading into markets throughout the North East at least match what Mizzou brings to the table. And lastly, Syracuse is mysteriously scheduled a handful of Big 10 games. That's opinion. That said, it'd be nice to have a school that's closer like Mizz.

The rest don't compare unless you can get the current unreachables...Notre Dame or Kentucky.

Syracuse is a private school. Rutgers has more of a following in NYC and Philly. It also has very high academic standards including one of the top Pharmaceutical programs in the world. It's Engineering program isn't to shabby either. Also consider the number of Fortune 500 companies (such as J&J) that have their world wide headquarters relatively near the main campus. Rutgers also just finished a $102 million expansion of its football stadium and is building a $10 recruiting lounge. It also has a Mens team that can at times be competive in the BE and a womens team that is competitive every year now in the tournament and I'm sure the Big 10 would love to strengthen its Womens Bball conference.

Did they buy a cheap stool to put on the sidelines so potential recruits can sit on it and watch the games? :p

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Mizzou football has had VERY limited success recruiting outside of Missouri. Going in to Texas, Oklahoma, or Nebraska and trying to convince kids to come to Columbia is an uphill battle right out of the blocks. While I can't assert that it would improve dramtically in the Big Ten, it certainly wouldn't get any worse.

Mizzou also has a large alumni base in Chicago, not as much so in Dallas, Denver, or Houston.

And there's absolutely no reason the Kansas rivalry couldn't be kept in tact.

Northwestern is also a private school, it's not an issue. Having "more" of a following means nothing if both followings are negligibly small. According to USNWR rankings, Rutgers would decidedly be in the bottom tier of the Big Ten with respect to engineering. Illinois/Michigan/Purdue are top 10, Northwestern/Wisconsin/Penn State/Minnesota/are top 25 (OSU is top 30), and Rutgers is around 50. Only Michigan State and Iowa are comparable in engineering (Indiana University doesn't do engineering, probably because of Purdue/IUPUI). "Better than Michigan State" isn't much of a selling point for academics.

If not Notre Dame then I can get excited about Pitt but Rutgers does absolutely nothing for me.

Same thing with Syracuse. *yawn*

I want Notre Dame, Mizzou, or Pitt (not necessarily in that order).

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

If it's Notre Dame, does anyone think it'll be football only while they stay in the Big East for bouncyball, or will be an all-or-nothing deal?

All or nothing.......and if Notre Dame could get past being an indy for football they would have been in the Big Ten years ago.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Honestly speaking, I don't think the big ten cares about sports that don't end in "ootball" when it comes to Notre Dame. It's the Holy Grail.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Anyone know when NDs contract with NBC is up? ND would be foolish to give up that revenue stream as it stands currently. However, if it were soon up for renewal, I would think that it would come at a cheaper price given the meager performance of the team in recent years.

2015 @ $15 million per year. They just renewed it.

NBC doesn't make money on the deal, but they'll probably keep renewing it rather than lose ND to another network.

UNM and U Arizona are also riddled with Mormons. I mean that in a good way. Sort of. The girls are cute, anyway.

I went to visit a few buddies of mine at U of A when I was in college and I imagine its a school for Mormons who aren't really into the whole Mormonism thing.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Considering Mormons probably make up a significant majority of the state this makes sense. Sorry to derail this some, but other than BYU (and now their HA campus) I have never heard of another Mormon school. Just got me curious.

There's also BYU Idaho, in Rexburg. Used to be called Ricks College. Not that it matters, since it's a tiny school.
