12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

I went to visit a few buddies of mine at U of A when I was in college and I imagine its a school for Mormons who aren't really into the whole Mormonism thing.

The term is "Jack Mormon," and nobody is wilder than a 20-something JM. Add to this that an Arizona 3 is a Minnesota 8 (or a Massachusetts 10), and they have quite the place in Tucson.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

14,000 students doesn't seem tiny to me.:p

Ok, 20 years ago, they were a tiny school.

Holy cow, now there are as many students going to Rexburg as there are going to Moscow! Man, how time changes things.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Big Ten cares a lot about academics as mentioned...all of the current 11 members are also members of the Association of American Universities. I can't see the Big Ten adding anyone not in the AAU with the exception of Notre Dame...

Northwestern is also a private school, it's not an issue. Having "more" of a following means nothing if both followings are negligibly small. According to USNWR rankings, Rutgers would decidedly be in the bottom tier of the Big Ten with respect to engineering. Illinois/Michigan/Purdue are top 10, Northwestern/Wisconsin/Penn State/Minnesota/are top 25 (OSU is top 30), and Rutgers is around 50. Only Michigan State and Iowa are comparable in engineering (Indiana University doesn't do engineering, probably because of Purdue/IUPUI). "Better than Michigan State" isn't much of a selling point for academics.

I hate to say it but there is more to it than just Engineering. Like I mentioned their pharmacy program is going to be better than any school currently in the Big 10. They also have plenty of other programs that are among the top in the country.

That would make them like a Cornell 17.5. I kid, I kid. Sort of.

I dated a mormon chick like that, actually just broke up with her about 3 weeks ago. She was pretty naughty lol...turned out to be psycho though..

Yeah, have kids and start a family at age 19, ***!?
I was talking more about how he dictated the book of mormon by Translating the Golden Plates using the "Urim and Thummim" (the silver spectacles with lenses made of seer stones).

If they have plenty of other programs that are top in the country, why would you specifically bring one up that isn't?

Also, according to USNWR rankings, Rutgers would be behind all 6 Big Ten schools which offer a graduate program in pharmacy.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

I think the front runner has to be Pittsburgh. Rival with Penn State, in the AAU, big Football/Basketball School, Good Attendance, History, Academics in line with Big Ten...

Minnesota is consistently in the top 3 in every ranking that is published on pharmacy programs.

That is all I have to add to this conversation.

I agree.

Unless Notre Dame can convince the Big Ten to allow ND to sell rights to the home games and keep all revenue (and not be subject to revenue sharing). Then this debate is over I would think.

In fact, I could see this happening. Not likely, but the Big Ten is probably willing to make a few sacrifices if necessary to bring in ND.

I prefer Syracuse. It pretty much rivals Pitt on all those fronts. Perhaps its a little down in some sports relative to to Pitt...but is a very storied school.

The big reason is that (and maybe its just me) Pitt seems like a city school...a big one...but a regional school none the less. It seems that its constantly in PSU's shadow. And really offers little beyond, well its a school that fits.

SU is the largest rep school between PSU and the border...and over to New England. Between PSU and SU, the Big 10 bridges effectively over to the east coast. Indeed, it brings 'big tracts of land'. I can see showcase games held regulary in NYC...that could boost revenue, reputations and recruiting all around the conference.

Mizzou is a bit of a different animal...almost have to decide what your priorities are.

Rutgers has the advantages of a very spunky logo:
