12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

TCU being poached from the Big XII would be impressive.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Expect a reaction from the Big East to this. If the Big East is smart they should try to head off the Big 10 from taking its members and get to 12 teams to get a confernce championship game played at either Gillete, Giants Stadium or Lincoln Field. Expect UMASS to be given a shot to join and BC to possible rejoin. Notre Dame, Marquette, and De Paul would probably be gone. What would be interesting though is if the Big East keeps Notre Dame and then would have PC, UMASS, BC, UCONN, and Notre Dame all with hockey teams in it. Talk of BEHC?

One major problem with this though... The Big East addmittedly wants to be a Basketball super-conference... No way do they cut back on the B-ball schools... In fact, if they lose a football team, I can see them adding another non-football school to keep the 16 bouncy ball teams...

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

I may be discounting the potential of the Mizzou-Illinois rivalry and I am certainly not in the know about their actual interest in the Big Ten, but I find it hard to believe that they would leave their huge traditional rival of Kansas.

They could just change the date of the game. Lots of Big Ten teams have non-conference rivals they play every year. Iowa-Iowa State, Michigan/Michigan State/Purdue-Notre Dame, Illinois-Mizzou (in recent years), Indiana-Kentucky, etc.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Interesting note...

Who gets to claim the "Big Twelve" name if the B10 does indeed add a team?

Depends if they poach a Big12 team and another Big 12 team leaves. They can swap names. But hey! At least the big ten wouldn't be at the bottom of the football barrel anymore! :D

Yeah, but as a hypothetical, could you imagine any of your examples leaving a conference where there biggest traditional rival is located for one that contains a secondary rival? Arkansas leaving the SWC for the SEC might be the only similar situation I can think of.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Missouri would be PERFECT fit, then Big12 could go after TCU.

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

That's not half bad.

I know. You could even sub ISU in there.

Pros:
Natural rivalry with Iowa
Closer than Mizzou
PERFECT fit for athletics (in terms of competitiveness)

Cons:
Not as good academically
A bit smaller

The best part about Mizzou is that they bring a lot of athletic talent as well as a very high academic standard.

What I like about the model in the link I posted is that it preserves virtually ALL of the rivalries in the Big Ten. It's **** near perfect (with the exception of Notre Dame).

Re: 12.15 announcement on Big Ten expansion

Just one person's opinion, but I think IF this happens, Pitt joins the Big10.

I would go with the Metrodome...they need to stay away from any team potentially getting homefield advantage...:D

If that's a knock at the Gophers, I appreciate the effort, but poor form. They don't play there anymore, remember? If you meant homecrowd advantage then you slipped up, and if you weren't taking a shot at MN, what's with the smiley face?

I have a hard time believing that Missouri is better candidate than Nebraska. Nebraska brings more TV audience than Missouri even though the population is smaller.

Wow... I guess you Colorado folks ARE all smoking a ton of weed. Who the hell mentioned Nebraska?!? And what makes you think Nebraska would ever WANT to join the Big10?

TCU is a private school.

University of Houston is a state school, has a larger enrollment, better hoops tradition, more alumni and bigger TV market and is working towards becoming a Tier I school. That being said Texas & Texas A & M got their azzes handed to them by Houston in the old SWC days, so they might not want UH.
