I'm really not sure what to do here if I'm Jeffries. You take Kevin's call, right? You just let him know your services are going to be very expensive.

Or do you just let it ring?
 
Easy. Dems support Kevin in exchange for removing the debt limit law and whatever else they want that is agreeable so we don't go through this. The GOP gets to run back and say Dems are running up deficits while the adults understand that this is dumb and needs to end so we can have a functioning government.

The Democrats should vote present. Let the idiots fix their own nonsense. Do nothing to help or hinder.

just need to make sure it will pass the senate

He can't be trusted, as he proved this summer with Biden. Any agreement will need to be written in blood before he gets a single Democratic vote. Otherwise, he can sit and spin.

You need to negotiate like the unions have been...it's all or nothing. Either he shows his azz and takes his medicine or he packs his bags.

No compromises...it's their way or the highway. If he wants to be Speaker he needs to end the nonsense and start playing the game. And set a deadline...put a ticking clock on it.

I say it's 50/50 he takes the deal and if he says no then no backsies the Dems vote either present ir to vacate and Qevin can suck it.
 
So no help from the Dems, they will be happy to assist in the ousting of McCarthy.

One thing I read, which upon more thought I think I agree with, is that to the question of "wouldn't the replacement be worse?", a firm "could it be worse?"

Seriously. McCarthy has given these terrorists 97% of what they want and it isn't enough. And not for nothing but McCarthy is exceptionally good at fundraising, so to lose that would be a bit of a boon to the DNC.

I still think the shrewd move is to sit back and let these idiots figure things out on their own and just vote present, but this... "F McCarthy" move is much more aggressive than I thought they were capable of.

Democrats will NOT vote present and will NOT vote to table. Sources say the caucus is unified. McCarthy’s actions on Jan 6, his trip to Mar a Lago, his attempt to discredit the Jan 6 Cmte, his reneging on debt limit deal and his actions this weekend are all the reasons

I don't know why but I find this incredibly interesting.

My prediction: McCarthy will end up winning in the end, because Matt Gaetz is a loser and not even half as competent as McCarthy, such as he is. And in 45 days we'll get another shutdown-avoiding CR, and Gaetz will do the same thing and lose again (this time by a bigger margin), and we'll go into a Presidential Election year with the GQP looking like what really are: incompetent boobs who can't even manage their own caucus.

I honestly get the sense that Gaetz, et al, watched House of Cards and think that's how this all actually works.
 
If Gaetz has the crazies in lockstep I don't know that Qevin survives...but I honestly don't know much about how all of this works anyways because it never happens.

As to his replacement being worse? So you get MTG or Fivehead in the position catering to every crazy Q or MAGA wishlist, and absolutely nothing gets done, Congress craters to a standstill.

And this hurts the Dems how?

Yeah, so if McCarthy can't even beat that cretin Matt Gaetz then his position as a leader is rightly finished. Gaetz is an absolute lightweight, and to lose to him is the end.


That said, McCarthy has dug himself such an idiot hole that I'm not sure he can get out at this point. I think he will, ultimately, prevail, but he's made it so much harder for himself. Just over 48 hours ago he was on Face The Nation blaming the shutdown brinksmanship on the Democrats. That was not lost on them, as Jeffries played the video at the caucus meeting.


Contrast this all to Nancy Pelosi (who I'm not fan of), and the difference is stark.
